What will it take to ensure that the two billion people currently without access to clean water around the world are not left high and dry? With 91亚色 as the academic lead, the UNITAR Global Water Academy @ 91亚色U is mobilizing the scientific community and forging collaborations to address water scarcity and lack of access.

United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) Global Water Academy (UGWA) reaches its one-year anniversary on UN World Water Day, March 22, the same day it will host a side event panel with 91亚色 as part of the United Nations (UN) World Water Day in Geneva 鈥� Addressing Water for Peace: Water Governance in Conflict and Humanitarian Settings 鈥� to spark collaborations and dialogue around the theme, Leveraging Water for Peace.

Two days later on March 24, the Aga Khan Museum in Toronto will shine a light on water in Indigenous and Muslim traditions with a panel discussion on , presented by the UNITAR Global Water Academy and 91亚色.

鈥淪ome 2.5 billion people live in water stressed countries where the supply cannot meet the demand, while 46 per cent of the world's population lacks adequate sanitation services. Access to safe drinking water is inequitable and puts the safety of women and marginalized groups at risk,鈥� says 91亚色 Research Chair in Global Change Biology Professor , inaugural director of the UGWA and a freshwater expert. 鈥淐onflict, changes in land use and climate change are exacerbating water insecurity in urban, rural and agricultural areas. These are global issues that continue to worsen.鈥�

91亚色 has a deep well of expertise in water research and action and along with the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) Global Water Academy (UGWA) will help develop scientific-based and governance solutions and applications to address water issues in some of the most underserved areas and for those most affected by climate change, flooding, and drought.

鈥淲ater is strongly linked to political instability and economic inequality, and as both a leader in sustainability as well as a progressive teaching and research institution, it is our responsibility to take action on this critical issue,鈥� says Rhonda Lenton, 91亚色鈥檚 president and vice-chancellor. 鈥淥ur thriving partnership with UNITAR to create a first-of-its-kind Global Water Academy is one example of how collaboration across sectors and borders can drive positive change for our global communities.鈥�

With UGWA, 91亚色 is advancing much needed scholarship and virtual and hybrid learning developed by global leaders in water research, resource management and policy development. The courses will be for all relevant parties, including researchers, governments, and the public on everything water from how to mitigate water shortages caused by climate change to making drinking water cleaner and more accessible.

鈥�The collaboration with 91亚色 to create the Global Water Academy recognizes its vision and leadership to become Canada鈥檚 leader in research into water technologies spanning different sub disciplines including wastewater, drinking water, groundwater and surface water research. Together, we are developing solutions to the world鈥檚 water issues,鈥� says Nikhil Seth, UN assistant secretary general and executive director of UNITAR. 

One of the goals is to empower learners everywhere to respond to water crises and to help achieve the UN SDG 6 鈥� support capacity building of sustainable management of water especially for Indigenous communities and marginalized/equity-deserving groups.

An essential part of UGWA鈥檚 work is building a global network of water experts, scientists, and policymakers, and reaching out to local people in some of the hardest hit regions to learn about their specific water challenges to help address them through training and education. Building a space where people can connect, form partnerships and collaborate is essential.

Some places are going to be warmer and drier; others will become wetter and cooler. There is not one solution that can be applied across the world and that is why the network is so important. In their first year, the network has grown exponentially. Their most recent virtual panel at the United Nations in New 91亚色 City attracted hundreds of people from 90 countries.

鈥淔or countries severely impacted by climate change and conflict, the lack of clean water can be life threatening,鈥� says Sharma of the Faculty of Science who researches how lakes worldwide respond to climate change, including rapid ice loss, warming water temperatures, degrading water quality, and changing fish distributions. 鈥淐lean and safely managed water offers a way out of these crises. It鈥檚 why we must work together to advance goal six of the United Nation鈥檚 Sustainable Development Goals 鈥� ensuring access to water and sanitation for all.鈥�

Part of outreach efforts include partnering with organizations such as the Aga Khan Museum. The event will include a dance performance and talk with 91亚色 alumnus Sashar Zarif, a projection installation and virtual reality exhibit in the atrium and Bellerive Room 鈥� 鈥� co-created by Associate Professor of 91亚色鈥檚 School of Arts, Media, Performance and Design and Assistant Professor Dolleen Manning of Queen鈥檚 University. A panel discussion on water issues will follow.

Involved in the water work at 91亚色 is Assistant Professor and Associate Professor , both of the Lassonde School of Engineering. Gora鈥檚 research focuses on drinking water management in small and Arctic communities, drinking water treatment and quality, and the development of light-based technologies for water purification and wastewater treatment. The water challenge goes beyond access and security, it also involves managing wastewater. Khan鈥檚 work focuses on urban hydrology, including flood risk assessment, sustainable water resource management and infrastructure, and how climate change impacts these systems.

Anther way 91亚色 is supporting water research is through its organized research unit, One WATER, dedicated to finding strategic, integrated solutions to water challenges faced by communities here and across the globe.

It is only through engaging people and communities around the world that solutions to water challenges can be found.

Community Researchers鈥� report highlights the School of the Arts, Media, Performance and Design鈥檚 commitment to diversity and inclusivity, says Dean Sarah Bay-Cheng    

TORONTO, Nov. 27, 2023 鈥� 91亚色鈥檚 School of the Arts, Media, Performance & Design (AMPD) is ranked No. 1 among Ontario universities and colleges, for offering the most culturally diverse music and dance undergraduate programs, in a recent report by Toronto-based non-profit organization .

The research report, , analyzed 77 performing arts programs and more than 6,000 performing arts courses available in colleges and universities in the province.

鈥淲e are proud to see the longstanding work of our faculty, staff and students reflected in this report, and we are committed to continuing our efforts to expand the visibility of 91亚色鈥檚 performing arts to reflect the great diversity of our University and communities,鈥� says Sarah Bay-Cheng, dean of AMPD. 鈥淲e look forward to welcoming audiences to attend and witness the great talent here,鈥� she says, noting the accolade affirms 91亚色鈥檚 commitment to diversity, inclusivity, and positive change in performing arts education.

Bay-Cheng adds, 鈥淚t鈥檚 not only about better training for performing arts majors, but also offering elective courses to a broad demographic of learners. We know that diverse cultural offerings can support greater mental and physical health for diverse student populations and within society in the long run.鈥濃��

The study was conducted by Queen鈥檚 University student Sarah Yee through the federal Canada Summer Jobs program at the Community Researchers. The organization connects young researchers and sector mentors, aiming to serve communities and support the career development of young individuals.

The study Yee conducted in collaboration with reveals that universities surpass colleges in offering performing arts programs, and that university performing arts programs make more references to cultural diversity than those in colleges. Course descriptions more frequently mentioned racialized groups such as Black, Indigenous and Latin American communities, according to the report.

The report also identifies areas for expansion and further development, highlighting South Asian, Chinese and Southeast Asian communities as underserved within performing arts programs across Ontario universities.

Bageshree Vaze, artistic director of Pratibha Arts, who mentored Yee on the project points out, 鈥淥ne in ten Ontarians are South Asian, yet there is very little training in South Asian performing arts at the post-secondary level.鈥�

Working to improve diversity, AMPD will be offering a forthcoming Philippine Folk Dance & Culture Summer Abroad course, furthering 91亚色鈥檚 commitment to inclusive excellence and promoting diverse identities and perspectives though art.

Bay-Cheng believes that the study demonstrates potential for Ontario鈥檚 post-secondary institutions. 鈥淲e hope that this study will help both academic leaders and the broader public appreciate the importance and opportunities for cultural diversity in performing arts education.鈥�

Blending classical text with a compelling contemporary approach, Dido, Queen of Carthage previews from March 18, opens March 20 and continues to March 24 in the Sandra Faire & Ivan Fecan Theatre on 91亚色鈥檚 Keele Campus.

Shadowed by war, Dido, Queen of Carthage is the original tragic love story with its hero Aeneas, the exiled prince of Troy, compelled by Fate to leave his beloved Dido, Queen of Carthage to fulfil a political destiny. Aeneas, the son of Venus, is one of the Trojans who escapes from the city after it is destroyed. In his exile he seeks refuge in Carthage. Learning of Aeneas鈥� experience and loss, Dido falls in love with him, only to be forsaken shortly after. Torn between her personal abandonment and national sacrifice, Dido performs an ultimate act of resistance.

Dido, Queen of Carthage is Marlowe鈥檚 first play, written when he was just 19 and still a student at Cambridge. 听Inspired by the fourth book of Virgil鈥檚 Aeneid, the story of Dido and Aeneas has stimulated artists for two millennia; from Ovid to Henry Purcell to modern-day science-fiction like Battlestar Galactica, with its exiled travellers seeking a prophesied new home. It isn鈥檛 hard to see the story鈥檚 appeal.

鈥淢arlowe is considered the 鈥榖ad boy鈥� of Elizabethan drama,鈥� said Hinton, a director, dramaturg and playwright. 鈥淎lways controversial, he was a homosexual, a convert to Roman Catholicism and some say even a secret agent and spy. 听We are setting this production in 1593 in the Deptford [London, UK] tavern in which Marlowe was murdered that year. In a case of great synchronicity, the tavern was an infamous halfway house for political refugees. We鈥檙e using this as an imaginative point of departure for the play, adding some historical info around Marlowe and his death, poetry and music.鈥�

Hinton has worked across Canada and directed over 80 productions. He has been the Associate Artistic Director at听Theatre Passe Muraille听and听Canadian Stage in Toronto, Artistic Director of the听Playwrights Theatre Centre听in Vancouver, the Dramaturg in Residence at听Playwrights' Workshop听Montr茅al, and Artistic Associate of the听Stratford Festival. From 2005 to 2012, he was Artistic Director of the听National Arts Centre听English theatre, where he created a resident English theatre company, with actors from across the country and programmed the NAC's first season of Canadian plays. Hinton has taught at the National Theatre School of Canada, Ryerson University and, since 2012, he has been the professional mentor for the 91亚色/Canadian Stage MFA program in directing. In 2009, Hinton was made an Officer of the Order of Canada.

Dido, Queen of Carthage features the 12 actors from the graduating class of the Acting Conservatory program. All elements of set, costume, lighting and sound are designed and executed by undergraduate theatre production students.

Exile, refugee, asylum-seeker, nomad, migrant, immigrant, these terms share a sense of displacement and a feeling of otherness. While some of these terms can be defined in legal and political terms, others speak to a rift that generates a social and psychological condition. With 鈥�Worlds of Exile,鈥� 91亚色鈥檚 Department of Theatre reflects on aspects of the varied experience of persons who, either by choice or as a result of imposition are living outside their home of origin, are othered by virtue of colonial exile practices, who have returned home only to find it unrecognizable, or who, as the children or grandchildren of exiles are living in two worlds.

Each Theatre @ 91亚色 production this season will include an ASL interpreted performance, as well as a Relaxed performance designed to reduce anxiety and provide a safe, enjoyable experience, taking into account variable sensory, communication or learning needs and abilities.

The in the School of the Arts, Media, Performance & Design at 91亚色 is hosting a panel of film leaders and filmmakers tomorrow to discuss the issue of sexual harassment in the industry.

The panel will also look at interventions that are reshaping culture within the Canadian film and television sectors, and how hierarchies of privilege within culture industries are changing.

TORONTO, Wednesday, Nov.8, 2017听鈥撎�Theatre @ 91亚色听launches its 2017-18 season with , a new work devised by students under the mentorship of an international collaboration between UK-based artist Deborah Pearson and Volcano, Toronto鈥檚 world renown boundary pushing theatre company. An innovative exploration of Canadian identity and citizenship in an increasingly populist world, Post National previews Nov. 19 and 20, opens Nov. 21, and continues to Nov. 25 in the Joseph G. Green Theatre on 91亚色鈥檚 Keele campus.

鈥淭here is no core identity, no mainstream in Canada.听 There are shared values 鈥� openness, respect, compassion, willingness to work hard, to be there for each other, to search for equality and justice. Those qualities are what make us the first听post-national state.鈥� 听 听听鈥擩ustin Trudeau听

Inspired by the prime minister鈥檚 comment that Canada is 鈥渢he first post-national state,鈥�听Post National听is a double bill. Continuing the tradition of shows that feature guest performers, pioneered by Rimini Protokoll鈥檚 100% Project, Tim Crouch鈥檚 An Oak Tree, and Nassim Soleymanpour鈥檚 White Rabbit Red Rabbit, Volcano is creating an instruction-based piece from and about Canada.听 The first part of the evening consists of 12 guest performers between the ages of 18 and 24 from the 91亚色 community answering live questions on stage about their relationship to nationhood and protest. The second part of the evening features the fourth-year acting students from 91亚色, performing the piece they devised with Pearson and Volcano, exploring the same topics from a different perspective.

The combination is a much-needed snapshot of university-aged students and how they regard nationalism in 2017.听Questions will be asked: Where were you born?听 Do you think that is a good question to start with?听 What question would you start with? 听

Commenting on the concept, Pearson added 鈥淟iving in the UK and witnessing the rise of the far right and nationalism in that country in such a visceral and disturbing way, I was both deeply touched and somewhat challenged by Trudeau鈥檚 assertion about Canada, the country where I was born. I wanted to go back and put this assertion under the microscope with a group of young Canadians, to see how it writhed or bloomed. Are we really setting a good example for the rest of the world?鈥�

Pearson is a live artist who tours her work all over the world and has most recently had her work staged at the Royal Court in London. She has a PhD in narrative in performance and has acted as dramaturg for more than 20 shows internationally, many of which have won multiple awards and accolades. She was also named one of the UK鈥檚 100 most powerful people in theatre in 2016 and 2009 by Stage Magazine.听 Pearson is an associate artist with Volcano and teams up with Manson and Volcano Associate Artist and Choreographer Kate Alton, both of whom are celebrated figures in the Canadian performance community and frequently tour their work internationally.

Post National kicks off 鈥淲orlds of Exile,鈥� a season of plays exploring longing, belonging and displacement. Exile, refugee, asylum-seeker, nomad, migrant, immigrant, these are terms that share a sense of displacement and a feeling of Otherness. While some of these terms can be defined in legal and political terms, others speak to a rift that generates a social and psychological condition. With听Worlds of Exile, 91亚色鈥檚 Department of Theatre reflects on aspects of the varied experience of persons who, either by choice or as a result of imposition, are living outside their home of origin, are 鈥渙thered鈥� by virtue of colonial exile practices, who have returned home only to find it unrecognizable, or who, as the children or grandchildren of exiles, are living in two worlds.

International artists and designers, architects, scholars, and representatives from the cultural sector and industry will meet in advance of Nuit Blanche this week to discuss how public art and creative use of digital media can re-animate urban space.

organized by in 91亚色鈥檚 School of the Arts, Media, Performance & Design and the , will be held in downtown Toronto from Thursday to Saturday, the first time the summit has been held in North America.

鈥淢edia Architecture is where architecture, urbanism and digital media come together to shape our collective identity,鈥� says Michael Longford, co-chair of Media Architecture Summit 2016 and Director of Sensorium, a digital media research centre at 91亚色. 鈥淭his type of public art includes everything from animating building facades through the use of digital technology to interactive installations that invite members of the public to perform and it has the power to energize citizens and transform spaces.鈥�

Featured talks include a Thursday evening panel on Nuit Blanche 2016 projects followed by a keynote address by internationally-acclaimed media artist, Rafael Lozano-Hemmer, winner of the Governor General鈥檚 Award in Visual and Media Arts (2015). The Summit also features presentations by Philip Beesley (Experimental Sculptor/Architect, Canada), Amahl Hazelton (Moment Factory, Canada), Scott McQuire (Media Scholar, Australia), and Dietrich Neumann (Urban Studies Scholar, USA).

An international group of artists, designers, architects, academics, urban planners, and industry representatives will make presentations and take part in panels and workshops. There will also be presentations by artists presenting large-scale public installations at the Nuit Blanche Toronto 2016 event.

TORONTO, May 26, 2016 鈥� The Mirkopoulos family of Cinespace Film Studios is providing 91亚色鈥檚 School of the Arts, Media, Performance & Design (AMPD) with a state-of-the-art facility for teaching, learning and creation using pioneering motion media technologies.

The generous $2.5 million gift from and the Mirkopoulos family has created a new 91亚色 AMPD Motion Media Studio @ Cinespace, embedded at the company鈥檚 Kipling Avenue Studio complex.

Located next to professional sound stages being used for major television and film productions, the AMPD Motion Media Studio @ Cinespace will offer students unparalleled experiential learning opportunities, with hands-on training in new media technologies as well as direct exposure to the industry they are preparing to join.

Opening its doors to students this fall, the AMPD Motion Media Studio @ Cinespace features two studios comprising more than 6,500 square feet of working space, plus seminar rooms and a suite of smaller studios for enhanced future development.

The new facility will enable AMPD students to explore the creation, convergence and application of next-generation arts and entertainment media technologies, with a focus on moving image production including 3D stereoscopic cinema; virtual, augmented and mixed reality; interactive performance; gaming; interactive data visualization, and more.

The AMPD Motion Media Studio @ Cinespace comes equipped with 鈥檚 markerless motion capture technology OpenStage2, eliminating the need for the bodysuits and markers currently used for film animation 鈭� for example, to track how the actors are moving. With this unique markerless motion capture technology, 91亚色 students will be able to create 3D animations, design interactive games and simulations, and integrate virtual performers for dance and theatre productions, without complicated setups.

Cinespace president Steve Mirkopoulos, brother of the late Nick Mirkopoulos, who founded the first large-scale movie production facility in Canada in 1990, announced the donation with brother Larry and second-generation Cinespace family members Jim, Chrisoula, Mike and Jackie Mirkopoulos.听 Company vice president Jim Mirkopoulos said the gift came from the family鈥檚 desire to create a value-added experience for students. 鈥淧artnering with 91亚色 will also keep Cinespace at the forefront of future cinema and new digital entertainment media.听 Content creation is the new manufacturing in our economy, and we should be supporting it,鈥� he said.

Cinespace is the also the founding sponsor of CineSiege, an annual juried showcase of outstanding productions by 91亚色鈥檚 cinema and media arts students, now in its 14^th year.听 The company鈥檚 longstanding support of AMPD鈥檚 rising young talent also includes several student awards.
