91亚色鈥檚 rising in world rankings in his favourite subjects and the campus鈥檚 positive vibe got Heath Leone to pack residence-living essentials, laptop, external drive and all, to move to the Great North 聽

When it was time for Heath Leone, a small-town Iowan to decide on where to go for university education, he looked beyond the United States. For the vibrant young person who wanted to move to a bigger city with a more liberal political outlook compared to his hometown, choosing Canada and Toronto wasn鈥檛 difficult. And the tuition fees for international students was comparable to what he would have paid as a citizen in the U.S., which was an added attraction.

鈥淪o, I went on campus tours to some of the universities here in Toronto and the GTA region,鈥 says 18-year-old Leone. 鈥淚 just liked the vibe of 91亚色, where everyone seemed really happy, and they [91亚色] had a good biology program.鈥

Just like Leone, many international future students apply to study at 91亚色, irrespective of their country鈥檚 proximity to Canada, as many subject areas taught and researched at 91亚色 have risen significantly in world rankings. This year, 91亚色 jumped five spots in the Times Higher Education Impact Rankings to 35th in the world and is once again ranked as a top five university in Canada by Maclean鈥檚 2025 University Rankings.

More recently, the prestigious ShanghaiRanking Consultancy鈥檚 2024 Global Ranking of Academic Subjects has placed 91亚色 in the top 100 in the world in six subjects and for several other, among top subjects offered in Canada.

Leone who is enrolled for courses in some of these subjects, including physics, says he is thankful that tutorial support is in place for students who seek extra attention. 鈥淚t鈥檚 nice that we have tutorials and lectures and gives the opportunity for you to clear up any misconceptions and doubts. Our tutorials are more focused on problem solving overall, versus just gaining physics knowledge. I really like the resources available and how the teaching and learning is set up at 91亚色.鈥

Heath Leone, right, with his friends at the Scott Library, 91亚色

Leone is happy with not only the education he is receiving at 91亚色 but is also excited about the employment and volunteering opportunities that are available on campus, including with the University鈥檚 external partners and affiliates.

Leone has already found work at a bakery chain鈥檚 91亚色 location and finds it helpful in shaping his professionalism. 鈥淚n my job, I need to communicate with my coworkers at the store and that helps with developing team management skills. It also teaches time management because I am working part time as a full-time student.鈥

On the volunteering front, Leone has joined non-profit student organization . Through a 11-week curriculum, its volunteers empower Toronto and 91亚色 Region students in grades 4-7 to deal with conflict, bullying, and violence in their homes, schools, and communities.

The program based out of 91亚色鈥檚 Keele Campus as well as Glendon Campus, also teaches embracing diversity and community building through mentors like Leone, who use their own lived experiences to guide participating school kids.

Residence life has been a source of inspiration for Leone in this sense. He lives on campus at Vanier Residence and loves the community experience. 鈥淲e have common rooms where I can hang out with friends, watch a movie and even store [in the common fridge] and share cookies from my shifts at work,鈥 he says with a laugh.

Leone, who has made several friends both on campus and in residence, adds that having a roommate has also been a positive experience as they are able to share and care about each other.

鈥淚 like that everyone knows each other in the building and pretty close to neighbours on the floor. So overall, residence life is positive,鈥 says Leone, who is now transforming into a big-town individual, while gaining valuable international exposure for a well-rounded future in the global arena.

The Hearts of Freedom exhibition and Passage to Freedom documentary spotlight first-hand accounts of those who fled wars, and the Canadians who helped them

TORONTO, Sept. 17, 2024 鈥 During the tumultuous war-torn period of the Vietnam War, the Cambodian Genocide, and the Laotian Civil War, millions fled their countries to seek asylum abroad. A new exhibition at 91亚色鈥檚 Osgoode Hall Law School, 鈥溾 (HOF), and documentary, Passage to Freedom, commemorates the lives of those who resettled in Canada.

Running Sept. 13 through Oct. 14, the HOF exhibition is on display at the main entrance of Osgoode Hall Law School Library. Passage to Freedom, by director Sheila Petzold, will be screened during the official opening of the exhibition on Sept. 24 at Helliwell Centre in Osgoode Hall Law School from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The free event is open to the public.

鈥淚t is remarkable that all those Southeast Asian refugees who arrived in Canada during the 1970s and 1980s quickly adapted to their new country and have made outstanding contributions to Canadian society. Many Canadians are unaware of their individual stories of resilience and how they enriched Canadian society in so many ways. Our exhibition and documentary film help to educate Canadians about this very important period in their country鈥檚 history,鈥 says Stephanie Phetsamay Stobbe, creator and curator of the HOF exhibition as well as researcher for the broader Hearts of Freedom project, and Passage to Freedom documentary.

In 1979 and 1980 alone, some 60,000 Southeast Asian refugees arrived in Canada, according to . In total, over 200,000 Vietnamese, Cambodian, and Laotian refugees landed here. Canada welcomed the highest rate per capita among all countries accepting such refugees. It was the single largest resettlement of refugees in Canadian history. This period has been described as a turning point in our country鈥檚 immigration policy and the positive humanitarian response by Canadians reflected a change in attitude towards refugees. In 1986, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) awarded the people of Canada the Nansen Medal for their exceptional contribution to refugee protection. It鈥檚 the only time that the Nansen Medal has been awarded to citizens of any country.

As a young child, Stobbe was one of those refugees who resettled in Canada with her family. Like many other Southeast Asian refugees, she attained a distinguished and successful career. President of the Canadian Association for Refugees and Forced Migration Studies (CARFMS) and a professor of conflict resolution studies at the Canadian Mennonite University鈥檚 Redekop School of Business in Winnipeg, Stobbe is a highly regarded and respected academic and researcher in the field of peace and conflict studies. She will be one of the principal guest speakers at the opening event on Sept. 24, taking attendees on a guided tour of the exhibition and leading discussion on the documentary film.

Passage to Freedom weaves together archival news stories, wartime footage and interviews with former refugees and Canadian immigration officials. The documentary is the result of years of work and 173 interviews conducted by the . Three interview teams and four community coordinators spoke with people who, between 1975 and 1985, escaped the horrors of war and made their way, first, to refugee camps in Hong Kong, Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, and the Philippines before Canada, as well as those who assisted them.

HOF has been touring across the country, making stops at the Senate of Canada in Ottawa, the Canadian Museum of History in Gatineau, the Canadian Immigration Museum at Pier 21 in Halifax and the Manitoba Museum in Winnipeg, as well as at university campuses and other venues.

鈥淚t is wonderful to see how well our exhibition and film have been received and celebrated right across Canada,鈥 says Stobbe.

Ties to 91亚色

A distinguished philosopher from 91亚色, the late Professor Howard Adelman was an early pioneer in the new discipline of refugee studies and one of its most influential scholars, activists, and policymakers. The founder and head of Operation Lifeline, he helped bring thousands of Southeast Asians to Canada through the Canadian Private Sponsorship of Refugees Program in the 1970s and 鈥80s.

Adelman also established the Centre for Refugee Studies (CRS) at 91亚色, one of the world鈥檚 leading research centers of its kind. Each year the CRS holds its annual Howard Adelman Lecture in honour of its founding director. There will be an opportunity to recognize Professor Adelman鈥檚 contributions to 91亚色 and Canada at the opening of the exhibition.

91亚色 and the Indigenous Primary Health Care Council sign an agreement towards advancing equitable health care as a foundation of the new School of Medicine

TORONTO, Sept. 12, 2024 鈥 In a spirit of fostering healing and reconciliation, 91亚色 and the (IPHCC) signed a relationship agreement today at Keele Campus as a first step toward developing joint initiatives and advancing Indigenous health priorities.

91亚色 President and Vice-Chancellor Rhonda Lenton (left) and IPHCC, Chief Executive Officer and 91亚色 Alumna Caroline Lidstone-Jones sign a relationship agreement

The agreement represents a path toward a fair and equitable, mutually beneficial, reciprocal, and culturally safe relationship that seeks to right the negative impact of colonial processes on Indigenous peoples' health and well-being and create space for Indigenous voices in governance and decision-making without prejudice or oppression.

鈥淚t is a privilege to be signing this agreement on behalf of 91亚色 reflecting the commitments we have made in our Decolonization, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Strategy to advance calls for action toward truth and reconciliation,鈥 says Rhonda Lenton, 91亚色 president and vice-chancellor. 鈥淭ogether in collaboration with the Indigenous Primary Health Care Council, we will continue to strengthen our relationship and improve Indigenous health services and outcomes.鈥

In the context of truth-telling about the history of Indigenous peoples, the IPHCC and 91亚色 will develop joint initiatives that benefit from the process of two-eyed seeing 鈥 integrating the strengths of Indigenous and Western ways of knowing for the welfare of all.

Caroline Lidstone-Jones, IPHCC, chief executive officer, gifts the University through Rhonda Lenton, 91亚色 president and vice-chancellor, a symbolic original piece of Indigenous art

鈥淭oday marks an important step in reaffirming our commitment to ensuring that Indigenous voices lead the conversation when it comes to Indigenous health. By formalizing this relationship with 91亚色, we are creating a pathway for collaboration that respects and honours the knowledge and traditions of First Nations, Inuit, and M茅tis Peoples. This agreement is an acknowledgement to the strength of two-eyed seeing which blends Indigenous and Western knowledge to improve the health outcomes of our communities. We look forward to working together to advance Indigenous health priorities for today and for the generations to come,鈥 says Caroline Lidstone-Jones, IPHCC, chief executive officer and 91亚色 alumna.

The focus of IPHCC鈥檚 and 91亚色鈥檚 work together will be to advance Indigenous health priorities, engage with Indigenous research, while respecting the right of First Nations, Inuit, and M茅tis Peoples for data sovereignty. It builds on 91亚色鈥檚 growing strength in health and medical education, as well as health research, especially in light of the University鈥檚 future new School of Medicine.

Caroline Lidstone-Jones, IPHCC, CEO, receives a gift from Rhonda Lenton, 91亚色's president and vice-chancellor

91亚色鈥檚 School of Medicine will respond to student interests and community needs for high-quality health care, while enhancing access and student diversity in health fields. It leverages the University鈥檚 ongoing leadership in advancing cross-disciplinary health programming and research.

鈥淭his agreement is an important milestone that signals the beginning of a journey to advance Indigenous health priorities through a reciprocal relationship between IPHCC and 91亚色, and also marks the first formal steps we are taking in the preparations for the new School of Medicine,鈥 says David Peters, dean, Faculty of Health.

Firekeeper Dr. Hopi Lovell Martin, (left) with Elder Jacque/line Lavall茅e at the signing ceremony

One of the goals of the new School of Medicine is to ensure a patient-centred, community-based approach to improving equitable access to high quality health care in northern鈥疶oronto, 91亚色 Region, Simcoe County, the District of Muskoka, as well as adjacent鈥痳ural areas. This agreement bolsters the school鈥檚 ability to foster equitable health care by preparing the next generation of primary care physicians to work collaboratively within inter-professional health-care teams at diverse learning sites.

Today鈥檚 agreement is an example of 91亚色 collaborating with communities to ensure equal access to health care.

Joint initiatives between 91亚色 and the IPHCC may include:

鈼 Input by the IPHCC on 91亚色鈥檚 medical education curricula with a focus on ensuring traditional knowledge is acknowledged.

鈼 Possibility of 91亚色 student and postgraduate placements to Indigenous primary health care organizations.

鈼 Collaborations where students can engage in cultural events and activities that are in Indigenous communities and/or are hosted by Indigenous organizations.

鈼 Identify opportunities to collectively advance the Truth and Reconciliation Commission calls to action through provincial initiatives, including opportunities for joint work on community driven research

Together, 91亚色 and the IPHCC strive to make positive change that will not only make health care better for Indigenous lives now but those of future generations.

91亚色 Physics and Astronomy Department welcome two new seedlings of Newton-tree descendant to Keele Campus

TORONTO, Sept 5, 2023 鈥&苍产蝉辫;91亚色鈥檚 Newton apple tree has had a storied existence, with lineage that is thought to go back to Sir Isaac Newton鈥檚 original discovery of gravity in the 1600s and the apple tree that infamously played muse to the physicist 鈥 even if the story about the apple falling on his head isn鈥檛 exactly how it really went down.

91亚色鈥檚 tree has stood, if not tall, then certainly proud, at the university for 25 years now. Ahead of Gravity Day this Sunday (9/8), the guardians of the tree in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at 91亚色 can now reveal that two new seedlings have joined the mature tree.

鈥淚 feel like the lineage is safe now,鈥 says Faculty of Science Associate Professor Cody Storry, a physicist and self-described apple guy who recently planted 50 apple trees for his 50th birthday and has taken on the responsibility for the Newton apple trees on behalf of the department. 鈥淕oing into a new school year, it鈥檚 a great time to talk about science. Gravity is a type of physics that everyone can relate to, and I love the fairy-tale aspect of the Newton story.鈥

Storry is available for interviews on campus this week and during the month of September in the lead up to National Tree Day (celebrated Sept. 25 and 28 this year, depending on the municipality) and from the Uxbridge Fall Fair or the nearby orchard Banjo Cider this Gravity Day, Sunday Sept. 8. Storry can comment on:

  • Why Gravity Day is celebrated Sept. 8, the story of Newton鈥檚 discovery of gravity and why the international physics community has taken to planting descendants of the original Newton apple tree around the world
  • The story of how 91亚色 came into possession of a Newton Tree descendant and its adventures over the years
  • Why trees planted from seed will not produce a Newton apple, why the seeds cultivated from 91亚色鈥檚 tree that went to space could likely never grow into a tree and other apple-tree facts
  • The law of gravity (as well as: high-precision laser spectroscopy of atoms; experimental tests of quantum electrodynamics and the standard model; antimatter, especially antihydrogen and positronium; exotic states of matter; laser cooling and atom trapping)

A 91亚色-led study aims to support positive social and economic change for 2SLGBTQ+ communities

While municipal and provincial poverty-related studies offer glimpses, there is no national measure for how widespread or persistent poverty is within 2SLGBTQ+ communities in Canada. A research project housed at 91亚色 looks to fill those gaps by conducting the first national study addressing poverty in 2SLGBTQ+ communities.

"We will produce an evidence-based portrait of poverty," says , director of the 2SLGBTQ+ Poverty in Canada Project, which launched its national survey during Pride Month. Part of the 2SLGBTQ+ Poverty in Canada: Improving Livelihood and Social Wellbeing study, the survey has been rolling out across the country, province-by-province, territory-by-territory over the summer months. That survey is now open to residents of Nunavut, the Northwest Territories and Yukon.

Mul茅, professor in the Faculty of Liberal Arts and Professional Studies cross-appointed to the Faculty of Health at 91亚色, says a motivating factor driving the research was hearing from community organizations that advocacy work was hitting roadblocks when policymakers and governments would ask for evidence. The project is dedicated to producing high-impact, policy-relevant knowledge. It aims to meet the need for nationally representative data to inform policy, funding, and programming decisions in government, academia and at the community level.

The findings from our comprehensive survey represent an exciting opportunity to add precision and nuance to our understanding of the varied experiences of poverty among 2SLGBTQ+ community members

Nick Mul茅

"We hope to produce outputs that will be helpful to the community, that they can use, and that we will use as researchers to advocate for change," says Mul茅, adding that the United States is eight to 10 years ahead of Canada with this type of data collection.

The comprehensive survey covers individual and household incomes, employment, education levels, housing stability, food security, access to health care and social support, experiences of discrimination and more. This critical information will allow for reliable comparisons between 2SLGBTQ+ people and the general population. The survey also allows respondents to indicate whether they would be interested in participating in individual interviews, a focus group, or both.

Residents of the territories 16 years or older who are members of 2SLGBTQ+ communities are encouraged to contribute to the research by . For more information about the national survey or the 2SLGBTQ+ Poverty in Canada Project, read the full media release or visit the study's website.

Danielle Howard

In 2018, a U.S. conservative news commentator said that LeBron James should just 鈥渟hut up and dribble,鈥 after the NBA star gave his views about then-President Donald Trump in an ESPN podcast.

Danielle Howard headshot
Danielle Howard, an expert in race, sport and performance.

Those comments inspired a documentary by the same name that explored the social and political influence of NBA players through the history of the league, which in turn was an inspiration for AMPD Assistant Professor 鈥檚 latest research at the intersection of race, sport and performance.

鈥淭he documentary got me thinking, does dribbling have more to say about politics, about Black life, then we have initially given it credit for?鈥

Howard is working on a book called Making Moves: Race, Basketball, and Embodied Resistance that spans the twentieth and twenty-first centuries of basketball history. She examines America鈥檚 history of white supremacy and how comments like 鈥渟hut up and dribble鈥 reflect a continued dismissal of Black lives and experiences, images of the Black body on display through history from slave auctions to NBA drafts and how audience and media surveillance impacts movement. 鈥淭he majority of bodies in the NBA are Black. So from a media standpoint, the majority of the media consumption we have of basketball is represented by Black bodies.鈥

She also looks at how Black athletes speak with their bodies, and how politics, history and social movements are embodied in athleticism, from the New 91亚色 Renaissance basketball team to present times.

鈥淏lack performance in sport is not merely aesthetic, it has potential and purpose to be disruptive to the political and to ultimately incite change and liberation.鈥

Howard is available to comment on:

  • Race, politics and sport
  • Theatre and spectacle in the opening and closing Games
  • Aesthetics and virtuosity in Olympic sports such as breaking, gymnastics, diving and synchronized swimming
  • Sport as performance, particularly basketball

J-Rebel

A half century after the birth of Hip-Hop among mostly Black and Latino, working-class youth in the South Bronx, breaking makes its debut as an Olympic sport. For longtime breaker  (Joseph Hersco) from the Supernaturalz Crew, who helped develop and co-taught a course on the art of breaking at 91亚色 with AMPD dance professor Mary Fogarty, he鈥檒l be watching the competition on Aug. 9 and 10 with a mix of emotions and criticisms.

鈥淭here is a political side of Hip-Hop 鈥 it comes out of particular socio-economic conditions, right? I think a lot of that can easily get washed out, when the focus is around just who's winning in the competition,鈥 says J-Rebel, who lives and works in the Jane and Finch community in Toronto. 鈥淏ut those things are intertwined in breaking 鈥 the politics, the cultural aspects, race, class and gender.鈥

J-Rebel, who teaches kids breaking and has travelled the world by competing in international breaking competitions comparable to the caliber we will see at the Olympics, picked up the practice himself decades ago with peers and in community centres in Jane and Finch, Lawrence Heights and Malvern where he grew up and lived. He says that while breaking is more accessible to the youth in his community 鈥 predominantly low-income and working-class 鈥 than a sport like hockey or football, there are still barriers to who might be able to compete at the highest level due to social inequalities that are still present in many communities in Toronto.

鈥淚t's not necessarily a predetermined thing because youth from these particular places have become resilient out of necessity, but your proximity to privilege and having resources is going to give you a better chance at developing your competencies.鈥

J-Rebel is available to comment on:

  • Origins and connections of breaking to hip-hop; roots in New 91亚色 and Black diasporic cultural expression聽
  • Why the Olympics need breaking and not the other way around
  • Technical, cultural and social aspects of breaking聽
  • Ensuring access to breaking and sport in low-income and racialized communities.聽
  • History of breaking in Toronto聽

Martin Breaugh

France was on shaky grounds ahead of the Olympics, politically speaking, but the ruling parties dodged a bullet in the snap election by blocking the far-right Rassemblement National (RN) party from taking power, says Professor  in the Faculty of Liberal Arts and Professional Studies and an expert in French politics.

鈥淭he presence of RN ministers at the Olympics would have been an impossible situation to manage with the potential of athletes boycotting such ministers, as well as local officials and maybe even delegations from elsewhere, especially the former French colonies, doing the same,鈥 he says.

Breaugh is available for email, phone and teleconferencing videos and is currently on Central European Time six hours ahead of Toronto. He is also available for interviews in French and can speak on:

  • The political situation in France in the leadup to the Olympics
  • How the handling of the Olympics will impact public perception of the government
  • History of politics in France

A 91亚色-led study aims to support positive social and economic change for 2SLGBTQ+ communities

How widespread 鈥 and persistent 鈥 is poverty within 2SLGBTQ+ communities in Canada? Municipal and provincial 2SLGBTQ+ poverty-related studies offer some glimpses but there is no national measure. Through conducting the first national study addressing poverty in 2SLGBTQ+ communities, a research project housed at 91亚色 looks to fill that gap.

Led by , 91亚色 professor in the Faculty of Liberal Arts and Professional Studies cross-appointed to the Faculty of Health, the 2SLGBTQ+ Poverty in Canada: Improving Livelihood and Social Wellbeing study launched a national survey in June, which is being rolled out across the country, province-by-province, territory-by-territory. Today that survey opens to residents of New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, and Prince Edward Island.

Mul茅, who is also the director of the 2SLGBTQ+ Poverty in Canada Project, says a motivating factor driving the research was hearing from community organizations that their advocacy was hitting roadblocks when policymakers and governments would ask for evidence. Recognizing this need for nationally representative data to inform policy, funding, and programming decisions in government, academia and at the community level, the project is dedicated to producing high-impact, policy-relevant knowledge.

鈥淲e hope to produce outputs that will be helpful to the community, that they can use, and that we will use as researchers to advocate for change,鈥 says Mul茅. The project was awarded $2.5 million in funding from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada.

Residents of Atlantic Canada 16 years or older and who are members of 2SLGBTQ+ communities are encouraged to contribute to this research by .

TORONTO, Wednesday, July 17, 2024 鈥 91亚色 is hosting Celebrate Success July 2024: Internationally Educated Professionals (IEP) Bridging Program, today at the , at 7:00 p.m. The first in-person ceremony since the pandemic, is in honour of program graduates, many of whom have overcome barriers as newcomers to Canada.

Dawit Gulta

鈥淭he IEP Bridging Program not only opened my eyes to the abundance of opportunities but also breathed life into my dreams,鈥 says Dawit Gulta, who is among 68 graduates from two professional certificate programs 鈥 Certificate in Canadian Business and Certificate in Information Technology 鈥 and are originally from Africa, Europe, Central and South America, East and South Asia, and the Middle Easte.

For more than a decade, over 1500 new Canadians like Gulta, from 65 countries have participated in IEP programs in these certificate programs and the Foundation program.  Offered by the Faculty of Liberal Arts and Professional Studies (LA&PS), these programs support newcomers with career coaching and networking opportunities and to help them develop an action plan tailored to their individual skills development and career path.

Funded by the Ontario Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development, these certificate programs help participants to complete credit courses in their fields, which can also help them to achieve professional accreditation in Canada. The Foundation program, which is focused on helping newcomers to hone soft skills in the Canadian context, is funded by federal government鈥檚 Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada.

鈥淭he Bridge Training Program supports new Canadians so they can start a new and better life in Ontario for themselves and their families,鈥 says Patrice Barnes, Parliamentary Assistant to the Minister of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development and Member of Provincial Parliament. 鈥淥ur government is proud to support this program, which helps newcomers find employment in their trade or profession, and gives them the tools they need to be successful throughout their career.鈥

Barnes is scheduled to participate in today鈥檚 celebrations and bring greetings to the graduates from the provincial funder.聽Other attendees will include Provost & Vice-President Academic Lisa Philipps, who will offer the opening remarks, and Michele Johnson, interim dean of LA&PS.

鈥淗aving immigrated from Jamaica myself, I understand the significance of building a foundation in a new country and equipping yourself for success in unfamiliar surroundings,鈥 says Johnson. 鈥淚 am proud to be part of a Faculty that provides an outstanding Bridging Program for Internationally Educated Professionals, supporting students from diverse backgrounds worldwide.鈥

鈥淥ur aim is to empower individuals to unlock their full potential and contribute meaningfully to their chosen fields in Canada,鈥 says Art Noordeh, who has served as the director of the IEP Bridging Program since its inception, explaining how the program supports IEPs transition into employment that matches their education, skills and work experience.

Gulta, who immigrated from Ethiopia and is receiving a Certificate in Information Technology, says, 鈥淭he program provided insights into the Canadian labour market, enhancing my understanding of industry trends and employer expectations. It equipped me with job search strategies, including resume writing and interview preparation, to effectively compete in the job market.鈥 He is currently working toward a graduate degree in Big Data & Data Analytics at 91亚色 and is a Mitacs graduate student intern at the Sunnybrook Research Institute.

Eva Yuanyuan Han

Another graduate, Eva Yuanyuan Han who is originally from China, shares her experience: 鈥淚 learned essential knowledge and methodologies through the specialized courses in Public Administration. The practicum course allowed me to practice in a real public sector work setting, which led to my current job.鈥

She joined the Ontario Ministry of Health as a Resource Analyst in May, graduating with a Certificate in Canadian Business in the Public Administration stream.

91亚色 staff, partners, friends and families of the graduates will also be in attendance at the event. A networking session at the end of the ceremony will give an opportunity for alumni, students and guests to connect.

91亚色 U-led project aims to drive social and economic change in support of 2SLGBTQ+ communities

TORONTO, June 27, 2024 鈥 Just how widespread 鈥 and persistent 鈥 is poverty within 2SLGBTQ+ communities in Canada? Municipal and provincial 2SLGBTQ+ poverty-related studies offer glimpses but there is no national measure. Research led by 91亚色 and launched during Pride Month looks to fill that gap.

鈥淭he goals of our project reflect mounting and disturbing evidence that members of our community cannot take the time to celebrate, as some are deprived of basic necessities such as food and shelter,鈥 says , professor in the Faculty of Liberal Arts and Professional Studies cross-appointed to the Faculty of Health, and director of the 2SLGBTQ+ Poverty in Canada Project. Housed at 91亚色, the project is conducting the first national study addressing poverty in 2SLGBTQ+ communities.

鈥淚t鈥檚 one thing to experience poverty, whether they were born into it, grew up in it, or fell into it,鈥 says Mul茅, who teaches at both 91亚色鈥檚 School of Social Work and School of Gender, Sexuality and Women鈥檚 Studies, 鈥渂ut when you鈥檙e a member of these communities issues become compounded with regards to discrimination, with regards to stigmatization, lack of self-esteem, difficulty accessing education, getting work, retaining work.鈥

In celebration of Pride, the 2SLGBTQ+ Poverty in Canada: Improving Livelihood and Social Wellbeing study launched with a national survey, which is rolling out across the country, province-by-province, territory-by-territory, throughout the summer.

Led by Mul茅, the study aims to advance social and economic change in support of 2SLGBTQ+ communities. Mul茅 says a motivating factor driving the research was hearing from community organizations that their advocacy work would hit roadblocks when policymakers and governments would ask for evidence. Recognizing this need for nationally representative data to inform policy, funding, and programming decisions in government, academia and at the community level, the project is dedicated to producing high-impact, policy-relevant knowledge.

Professor Nick Mul茅
Nick Mul茅

鈥淲e will produce an evidence-based portrait of poverty,鈥 says Mul茅, adding that the United States is eight to 10 years ahead of Canada with this type of data collection.

The project was awarded $2.5 million in funding from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada. The comprehensive survey covers individual and household incomes, employment, education levels, housing stability, food security, access to health care and social support, experiences of discrimination and more. The survey will also allow respondents to indicate whether they would be interested in participating in individual interviews, a focus group or both.

鈥淲e are looking at the extent and experiences of poverty amongst the 2SLGBTQ+ community,鈥 explains Mul茅. 鈥淲e will also look at the effects of poverty in the lives of people from these communities.鈥

This critical information will allow for reliable comparisons between 2SLGBTQ+ people and the general population. 鈥淲e hope to produce outputs that will be helpful to the community, that they can use, and that we will use as researchers to advocate for change,鈥 says Mul茅.

Launching the survey during Pride was significant for the researchers. 鈥淓very June, public institutions, civil society organizations, and leaders from many sectors share in celebrating Pride, positioning themselves as stewards of the hard-fought progress made in recognizing the human rights of 2SLGBTQ+ people in Canada,鈥 says Mul茅. 鈥淒espite this progress, for 2SLGBTQ+ communities, Pride is a time of deep reflection, community mobilization, and an opportunity to draw attention to the socio-economic disparities affecting our collective well-being and our differing abilities to celebrate Pride.鈥

Members of 2SLGBTQ+ communities across Canada who are 16 years or older are encouraged to contribute to this research by .

The project is co-directed by Maryam Dilmaghani, professor of economics in the Sobey School of Business at Saint Mary鈥檚 University. Leading the quantitative and qualitative data gathering are Todd Coleman, assistant professor in the Department of Health Sciences at Wilfrid Laurier University and co-chair of the project鈥檚 quantitative research team; and Andrea Daley, professor in the School of Social Work, Renison University College at the University of Waterloo and co-chair of the project鈥檚 qualitative research team.
