The IPilogue is the first blog of its kind populated with entries by student editors from law schools across Canada and around the world, as well as guest blogs by IP experts, scholars and practitioners.

The blog contains comments and thoughts about current pressing intellectual property, technology, privacy and related legal issues (see the blog at www.iposgoode.ca) and has a wide-ranging following in Canada and internationally from government, industry, academia and from other expert groups and members of the general public.

Many student posts have enabled greater employment opportunities for students, sparked informed debates on various issues, and led to publication in leading journals and a following in a number of law and policy forums.

IP Osgoode invites applications from JD and LLM students (you don’t need to be an Osgoode student to apply!).

CALL FOR INNOVATION CLINIC FELLOWS

Description:

The IP Osgoode Innovation Clinic, the first student-based clinic of its kind in Canada, is seeking law students from Osgoode Hall Law School to provide assistance to under-resourced inventors, entrepreneurs and start-up companies with their innovation and commercialization activities.

It is expected that the majority of the work done by students will relate to patent law. The remaining time would be spent working on other IP-related needs as they arise, (e.g. assistance with trade-mark, copyright, or trade secret issues). Examples of the types of work that the Clinic Fellow may be engaged in include:

  • Reviewing business transactions involving IP
  • Assisting with various steps in the patent prosecution process (i.e.: conducting prior art searches, reviewing patent specifications, etc.)
  • Performing freedom-to-operate and clearance searches
  • Assisting with various steps in the trade-mark prosecution process
  • Conducting legal research

Positions Available:

Innovation Clinic Fellows (8-10 positions)

Term: 2016/2017 academic year, with a possibility to continue for summer 2017

ÌýAs part of the IPilogue Editorial team you will be contributing evidence-based blogs on current IP, technology, privacy and related legal issues.

ÌýTime Demands: ÌýEstimated average of 5-6 hours per week (1 blog post every 2 weeks)

ÌýQualifications:

  • An interest in learning about current IP law and technology issues
  • Ability to write in a concise and clear manner
  • Respect/openness for differing opinions and evidence-based issue analysis

Term: ÌýMay - August 2015, with a possibility to on for the 2015/2016 academic year.

 

(2)Ìý Content Editor (1 position)

As the Content Editor, you will work closely with the Managing Editor in managing and coordinating the workflow of the IPilogue editorial team, assigning and reviewing blogs, updating and maintaining the IP Osgoode website, and creating IP Osgoode’s weekly e-newsletter, the IPIGRAM.

Time Demands: Estimated average of 5-6 hours per week

Qualifications:

  • An interest in learning about current IP law and technology issues
  • Ability to write in a concise and clear manner
  • Respect/openness for differing opinions and evidence-based issue analysis
  • Excellent editorial skills
  • Excellent time-management, organizational and interpersonal skills
  • Experience with WordPress is an asset

Term: May - August 2015 with a possibility of continuing on for the 2015/2016 academic year. (Note: The successful candidate will undergo training and orientation in February and job shadow the current Content Editor until the end of April)

 

(3)Ìý Features Editor (1 position)

As the Features Editor, you will work closely with the Managing Editor in planning feature articles, soliciting contributions from IP scholars and experts, drafting feature articles and announcements, updating content on the IP Osgoode website, and coordinating the workflow of the IPilogue art editorial team.

Time Demands: Estimated average of 5-6 hours per week

Qualifications:

  • An interest in learning about current IP law and technology issues
  • Ability to write in a concise and clear manner
  • Respect/openness for differing opinions and evidence-based issue analysis
  • Excellent time-management, organizational and interpersonal skills

  • you must be a 1L, 2L or 3L student at Osgoode Hall Law School
  • completion of the Legal Values: IP Commercialization Seminar course is not required but would be considered an asset
  • completion of the Intellectual Property or Patents course is not required but would be considered an asset

Call for Clinical Fellows (Summer 2012)

IP Osgoode has partnered with the Ontario Centres of Excellence’s (OCE) Centre for Commercialization of Research (CCR) to create a unique intellectual property (IP) clinical programÌýthat will match Osgoode law students with OCE-supported companies. Students help under-resourced clients to secure and protect their IP en route to commercial success. The Clinic's clientele reflect a diverse range of innovators drawn primarily from the information and communications technology (ICT), biotechnology, and green-technology sectors.

We are seeking law students to provide legal services to organizations that need assistance in their innovation and commercialization activities.

Positions Available: Clinical Fellows (5-6 positions)

It is expected that the majority of the work done by students will relate to patent law. The remaining time would be spent working on other IP-related needs as they arise, (e.g. assistance with trade-mark, copyright, or trade secret issues). The students’ work during the placement may include:

  • reviewing business transactions involving IP

Call for IP Intensive Internships (Fall 2012)

Deadline: January 26, 2012

The Intellectual Property Law and Technology Intensive Program (the "IP Intensive Program") provides students with training in intellectual property law and technology.Ìý The opening two weeks of classes are dedicated to lectures from prominent members of the IP community. These lectures cover a range of topics aimed at teaching students fundamental aspects of substantive and procedural law applied in the day-to-day practice of IP law.

A key component of this clinical program is an 11-week internship with a government agency, industry, public interest group or other organization that is heavily involved with IP matters (e.g. high-technology or pharmaceutical matters). The internship, together with regular discussions and seminars, a major research paper, blogging exercises, and a seminar presentation, provides students with a comprehensive examination of important practical aspects of intellectual property law and technology.

Pre-Requisites: Students must have taken at least two of the following courses: Intellectual Property Law, Patent Law, Copyright Law or Trademark Law.

Class size: About 12-15 students

Term: Fall 2012 (15 credits)
