Elevating Cybersecurity Vigilance: Fusing Knowledge Dissemination via the Understanding Cybersecurity Series (UCS) knowledge mobilization Program

We continue advancing cybersecurity awareness through our Understanding Cybersecurity Series (UCS), designed for students, researchers, developers, and industry professionals. UCS aims to equip communities with the knowledge and tools needed to address evolving cyber threats and strengthen digital resilience.

Last week, our director, Prof. Arash Habibi Lashkari, delivered a keynote talk at the UWORCS 2026 Conference hosted at Western University. The talk, “Elevating Cybersecurity Vigilance: Advancing AI-Powered Security and Security of AI Through the UCS Knowledge Mobilization Program,” explored the dual role of AI in cybersecurity, as both a powerful defense mechanism and an emerging attack surface.

Understanding Cybersecurity Series (UCS) for Business Owners

As part of our Understanding Cybersecurity Series (UCS) knowledge mobilization project, this fall, our director, Prof. Lashkari, delivered a cybersecurity talk and joined the panel on "" event in Markham, ON, Canada.

AI offers significant benefits to cybersecurity, such as enhancing threat detection through machine learning algorithms, automating responses to breaches, and improving overall system monitoring by identifying patterns in large datasets. However, it also presents challenges. On one hand, AI-powered automated attacks can enable cybercriminals to launch more sophisticated and targeted intrusions at scale, while comprehensive malware can adapt and evade traditional security measures. Additionally, AI systems are vulnerable to adversarial attacks, where attackers exploit weaknesses in AI models to bypass defenses or manipulate outcomes. Thus, AI is both a powerful tool and a potential liability in cybersecurity.

Cybersecurity Collaboration Contract

The Understanding Cybersecurity Series (UCS) is a comprehensive knowledge mobilization program aimed at addressing the critical issue of cybersecurity resiliency on a broader scale founded by Professor Arash Habibi Lashkari at the School of Information Technology in 91ɫ. This collaborative research aims to generate comprehensive datasets from Z-Wave, Zigbee, and Wi-Fi network traffic, develop AI/ML models for IDS, and rigorously evaluate and optimize these models for performance and scalability. The research will be conducted in four phases, covering data collection, model development,
performance evaluation, and real-world validation.
