Toward Human-Centered AI to Improve Decision Making in Healthcare
Abstract
In this talk, Dr. Hyunggu Jung will present his recent research efforts in the field of human-centered artificial intelligence (AI). Over the past several years, his research has focused on the early-stage development of innovative technologies through design and engineering to support people with special needs across multiple domains, including healthcare, social media, accessibility, and the sharing economy. The talk will focus on his approaches to developing human-centered AI technologies using design methods and mathematical models. He will conclude by discussing future research directions, including the development of tools that leverage data while reflecting the needs and barriers of AI stakeholders, such as healthcare providers, managers, and patients affected by AI-based decisions, and the creation of effective human-centered AI systems to improve decision making in healthcare.
Biography
Hyunggu Jung is an Associate Professor of Informatics in Nursing at Seoul National University and Director of the Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence Lab (HCAIL). Prior to joining SNU, he served as an Associate Professor of Computer Science & Engineering and an Associate Professor of Artificial Intelligence at the University of Seoul. He received his B.S. degrees from KAIST, his M.Math from the University of Waterloo, and his M.S. from Stanford University, all in Computer Science. He also earned a B.S. with a minor in Business Economics from KAIST and a Ph.D. in Biomedical and Health Informatics from the University of Washington School of Medicine. In addition, he worked as a research intern at Microsoft Research and PARC. His research interests lie at the intersection of human-centered AI, health informatics, social computing, accessibility, and aging. His work aims to advance AI through design and engineering approaches that support people with special needs, including older adults, people with visual impairments, and North Korean defectors, across domains such as healthcare, social media, the sharing economy, and education. Dr. Jung is a recipient of the Korean Government Scholarship and the Mogam Science Scholarship.
