We are delighted to share a successful recap of the KORE Annual Celebration, which took place on December 3rd. The event brought together faculty, graduate students, and undergraduate students for an afternoon of networking and academic exchange. This annual event serves as a vital platform to highlight the growing significance of Korean Studies at 91��ɫ.

The celebration featured a dynamic program that showcased the diverse academic activities within KORE and the wider Korean Studies community. Key highlights included:

Undergraduate Student Engagement: The event featured the presentation of student speaking projects and an official Awards Ceremony recognizing top achievements.

Graduate Research Spark Talks: Engaging presentations by graduate students on their current research.

Program Updates: Faculty members shared details on Korea Studies-related courses at 91��ɫ and future program initiatives, alongside a review of KORE's recent activities.

The celebration successfully provided a valuable networking opportunity for attendees while reinforcing the depth and breadth of Korean Studies research at the university.

Congratulations to the Award Winners! We extend our warmest congratulations to the three undergraduate students who were recognized for their outstanding participation in the recent Korean Speech Contest: Gia Bao Huynh, Eunice Neo, and Yuhan Wang.

Summer school program on North Korean culture to start in May 2022

A new summer school program studying North Korean culture is in production and is set to be hosted at 91��ɫ. The summer program has been called the “first-of-its-kind” and allows students to study North Korean arts, literature, and propaganda. The program is set to start in May 2022 and will run for two weeks, coordinated by Faculty of Liberal Arts & Professional Studies (LA&PS) Professor Thomas Klassen.

Faculty of Liberal Arts & Professional Studies (LA&PS) public policy and administration studies Professor is co-ordinating the inaugural North Korea Summer School: Inside North Korean Literature, Art and Film. “The school is an extraordinary event for graduate and senior undergraduate students to explore North Korean literature, film, fine art and propaganda,” says Klassen, adding that to the best of his knowledge, this is the first such educational program anywhere in the world.

School of Public Policy and Administration Professor Thomas Klassen from the Faculty of Liberal Arts & Professional Studies (LAPS) worked with Professor Sophia Lee��Chung-Ang University in Seoul, South Korea, to provide undergraduate students in their respective classes with a unique international learning opportunity. New Generation Korean 1

New Generation Korean 1 is designed for Korean language learners at the secondary and post-secondary education levels, and for independent self-study adult learners. It presents learning goals and best practice lessons developed by professors with extensive Korean language experience. With classroom-tested lessons, New Generation Korean 1 will guide students to effective and efficient learning of the Korean language and an appreciation of the Korean culture, while supporting the teaching and learning of Korean in a fun and effective way.

The textbook is accompanied by a vocabulary app, web-based workbook, and teaching resources. Intermediate-level textbook and workbook will be published in the subsequent years.

The authors of the textbook series are Mihyon Jeon, 91��ɫ; Kyungrok Ko, University of Toronto; Daehee Kim, Wonkwang University; Yujeong Choi, University of Toronto; and Ahrong Lee, 91��ɫ.
