The "City Builders" project aims to record, examine, and divulge the fascinating history of metropolitan Toronto's construction industry; particularly the experiences of Irish, Italian, and Portuguese immigrant workers and their labour organization after the Second World War. Its outputs include: 1) a travelling exhibition with extensive augmented reality-activated digital content; 2) a website packed with interactive digital resources in the form of text, photos, info graphics, audio recordings, videos, maps, and timelines (a few examples here, here, and here); 3) a series of eighteen 6-8 minute-long oral history videos about the lives of retired construction workers and union members (example here); and 4) a two-part documentary, totalling two hours, about two transformative moments in the history of Toronto's construction industry and labour movement.

The first episode of the documentary focuses on the successful campaign by the Irish-Canadian labour activist Gerry Gallagher and his Laborers' Local 183 to improve workplace safety legislation in Ontario in the 1960s-70s, when over 200 construction workers lost their lives building the city, above ground and under. The second episode focuses on the labour organization of Italian immigrant workers in the residential construction sector, known at the time as "the jungle" due to its terrible working conditions and widespread exploitation by developers and (sub)contractors. Led by the charismatic Bruno Zanini - a petty criminal and aspiring opera singer turned labour organizer - and the thundering Charles Irvine - a shillelagh-wielding, Scottish immigrant, who was once a banana boat seaman - bricklayers, plasterers, carpenters, and labourers, organized as the Brandon Union Group, engaged in two major strikes in 1960 and 61; the latter being one of the largest and most violent in the city's postwar history.

With the Clara Thomas Archives and Special Collections, we digitized over 3,200 photos from the Toronto Telegram collection, featuring incredible photos of the city's landmarks being built and of the historical agents who made them possible. Many of these have the potential of becoming iconic images of Toronto, whose dissemination will likely extend beyond the confines of this project.

All of the City Builders' digital outputs will be freely accessible online after September 28.

The Northern Studies Program at Carleton University is a 1 year intensive Master's program and 2018-19 will be the 2nd year of our program. The purpose of the Northern Studies programs is to provide opportunities for students to learn how to recognize and support wise public and private-sector decision making in the dynamic North.  The program is interdisciplinary and rooted in analysis of real-world problems. It presents research at the cutting edge from across the North.

The program emphasizes the biophysical, social, and policy environments of northern Canada. It recognizes the impacts of climate change on northern ecosystems and on the Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities that depend on renewable resources. It acknowledges the stresses of cultural transition and evolving governance as land claims and self-government agreements are completed and implemented. It appreciates the importance of functional bureaucracies and practices that reflect the aspirations of northerners. It apprehends the changes to the Arctic Ocean that will facilitate shipping and bring many visitors to the North.

The Northern Studies program is:

  • The first interdisciplinary program at the Master level to present a combined focus on the social, political, and physical environments of northern Canada;
  • It offers short, intensive access to a Master degree and Graduate Diploma in the National Capital Region;
  • The core seminars for the program are multi and interdisciplinary;
  • The program recognizes the importance of understanding the nature and capacity of research in order to support decision-making in the North;
  • The program aims to assist northern professionals, who need further academic experience to advance their career ambitions, through both intensive Master degrees and the Graduate Diplomas;
  • The degree program presents a full credit of experiential learning during a field course in the North and a work placement.
  • The program welcomes applications from all people interested in an interdisciplinary approach to Northern Studies. We especially welcome applications and inquiries from Indigenous and non-Indigenous northerners. The program aims to foster respect, appreciation, and interest in the great diversity of cultures and environments found in the North.

    To apply:

    Applications are due on February 1, 2018.  This program has limited enrollment due to its unique interactive and experiential approach.  Applications will continue to be accepted until all places in the program have been filled.
