鈥淭his is our second annual event recognizing 91亚色鈥檚 Research Leaders and we plan to continue carrying forward this tradition,鈥� said Robert Hach茅, 91亚色 vice-president research & innovation.听 鈥淚t is a great pleasure to celebrate the exceptional work of 91亚色鈥檚 researchers, students and post-doctoral fellows听鈥� and important to us to recognize the valuable impact of their research on society.听 We are pleased to invite all members of the 91亚色 community, including students, staff and faculty to join us for this very special occasion.鈥�

Hosted by the President鈥檚 Office and the Office of the Vice-President Research & Innovation, the event begins at 4:30pm in the McEwen Auditorium in the Seymour Schulich Building. A reception will follow. Many 91亚色 researchers who have earned prestigious awards, major grants and book prizes will be recognized, along with a presentation to the winner of the President鈥檚 Excellence Research Award, an announcement of the winners from 91亚色鈥檚 undergraduate research fair and recognition of graduate student research achievements.

Event highlights include, a greeting from the province by Monte Kwinter, MPP 91亚色 Centre, parliamentary assistant to the minister of economic development, trade and employment; a special video highlighting a cross-section of 91亚色鈥檚 researchers; and a slide presentation capturing some of the many research successes of the past year.

Carl E. James, professor, in the Faculty of Education and Director, 91亚色 Centre for Education & Community, and Norman Yan, professor in the Department of Biology, Faculty of Science and a core faculty member of the Institute for Research in Innovation & Sustainability, have been inducted into the society as Fellows.

鈥淥n behalf of the 91亚色 community, I would like to offer our sincere congratulations to two of our faculty members, Carl James and Norman Yan, on being named as Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada,鈥� said 91亚色 President & Vice-Chancellor Mamdouh Shoukri. 鈥淭his prestigious recognition is well-deserved as Drs. James and Yan are leading scholars who have made outstanding contributions in research in their fields.鈥�

The society has elected 71 new Fellows, including one Foreign Fellow and one Honourary Fellow, to its ranks for 2012. The newly elected Fellows will be officially inducted on Saturday, November 14, 2012 during a ceremony held at The Ottawa Convention Centre. Election to the academies of the Royal Society of Canada is one of the highest honours a Canadian scholar can achieve in the Arts, Humanities and Sciences.

Carl E. James (left) is professor in the Faculty of Education and director of 91亚色 Centre for Education and Community.听 He is also cross-appointed in the graduate programs in Sociology and Social Work. Over the years, he has conducted research听that examines the schooling, educational, social and athletic experiences of marginalized and racialized youth. Long concerned with issues of equity, in his work, James seeks to address the problems and concerns that account for the representation and outcomes of racialized people in institutions and society generally.听 In 2006, he was awarded an honorary doctorate from Uppsala University, Sweden for his contribution to social equity and anti-racism education.

Norman Yan (right) is professor in the Department of Biology, Faculty of Science.听 His long-term professional goals are to identify the separate and interactive effects of climate change, acid and metal pollution, and invading species on the life of Canadian lakes, and to determine the key factors that regulate the recovery of these lakes from historical damage, once the stressors are removed.听Much of his field work is executed in partnerships with Ontario government scientists at their laboratories near Dorset and Sudbury. After working for the Ontario Ministry of the Environment for 25 years, Yan joined 91亚色 in 2000. He now splits his time between the Ontario Ministry of the Environment鈥檚 Dorset Environmental Science Centre and 91亚色.

The medals are in celebration of the 60th anniversary of Queen Elizabeth II鈥檚 accession to the throne as queen of Canada and some 60,000 Canadians are expected to be recognized throughout 2012.

Distinguished Research Professor and Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada James Carley of 91亚色鈥檚 Department of English, a specialist in book history, was nominated for his outstanding contributions to scholarship in Canada and internationally by Senator Nicole Eaton, who is also the chair of the board of the Pontifical Institute of Mediaeval Studies in Toronto.

Ronald Pearlman

University Professor Emeritus Ronald Pearlman and Distinguished Research Professor Emeritus Kenneth Davey both of 91亚色鈥檚 Faculty of Science & Engineering were nominated by the Royal Canadian Institute (RCI) for the Advancement of Science for their outstanding contributions to the institute, as well as their support of a science culture and of science literacy in Canada. In addition, Professor Peter Victor of the Faculty of Environmental Studies (FES) was nominated for his support of the institute鈥檚 science outreach activities.

Four members of 91亚色鈥檚 Learning Technology Services in University Information Technology will also be honoured. They were nominated by the RCI for their work webcasting the institute鈥檚 lectures so they could be viewed around the world, increasing the public's awareness and understanding of science. They are Bob McKenzie, assistant manager of media services, Robert Denault (BA Hons. 鈥�05), a digital media support specialist who has worked at the University since 2003, David Gibson, digital media support specialist, and Kelly Parke, program organizer.

Robert Denault

Pearlman, first-vice-president of the RCI and incoming president, is the director of the Core Molecular Biology/DNA Sequencing Facility and former associate dean and dean of 91亚色鈥檚 Faculty of Graduate Studies. He is also associate scientific director of the Gairdner Foundation and co-ordinates the student outreach program for Gairdner. His research interests include molecular biology and biochemistry, cell biology and genetics utilizing the new genomic and proteomic technologies.

听Kenneth Davey

Davey, vice-chair of the Board of Canadian Science Publishing, is co-author of the first-year university textbook, Biology: Exploring the Diversity of Life (2009), and is the former co-editor of the Canadian Journal of Zoology. On the administrative side, Davey once held the positions of chair of 91亚色鈥檚 Department of Biology, dean of the Faculty of Pure and Applied Science and vice-president, academic. He previously won the Queen Elizabeth II Silver Jubilee Medal, as well as the Queen Elizabeth II Golden Jubilee Medal. He is also an officer of the Order of Canada, a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada and a past president of the RCI. His research听explores the control of development and physiology in various invertebrates, principally insects and nematodes.

Peter Victor

Victor, past president of the RCI and the founding president of the Canadian Society for Ecological Economics, is an economist who has worked on environmental issues for 40 years as an academic, public servant and consultant. He is chair of the Greenbelt Council of Ontario, as well as a member of the Board of the David Suzuki Foundation. From 1996 to 2001, Victor was dean of FES, and before that an assistant deputy minister at the Ontario Ministry of the Environment.

James Carley

Carley is an associate fellow of the and an honorary research fellow of Lady Margaret Hall at the University of Oxford. His latest publication is an edition and translation of the De uiris illustribus by the Tudor antiquary John Leland. Carley鈥檚 previous works include King Henry VIII鈥檚 Prayer Book: Facsimile and Commentary (2009), (2004) and (2000).

Kelly Parke

Parke, an adjunct faculty member in the Schulich School of Business in the MBA program, has worked in the media industry for more than 30 years. As a technical producer and videographer he has worked with most of the major television networks in North America and with the BBC. In the entertainment sector he has worked on projects with the Rolling Stones, Brad Pitt and Hugh Grant and many other celebrities. In the sports world, he continues to be a videographer for many major league sports, as well as the Olympics.

Bob McKenzie

McKenzie has taught media production, delivered media storytelling seminars and served as producer/director for several broadcast, promotional and informational videos across North America for more than 35 years.听 As director of media for Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia, he was instrumental in transitioning their distance and hybrid learning systems from satellite to live and on-demand video streaming utilizing a "flipped" classroom model of blended learning. For the last three decades, he has been a media producer/manager with 91亚色鈥檚 Instructional Technology & Learning Technology Services, working with faculty, students and staff to share their stories and ideas utilizing various media designs and techniques.

David Gibson

Gibson has travelled the world, 15 countries and counting, lived on three different continents and worked on two of them. In addition to working at 91亚色, Gibson is the co-founder and producer of Riverlife Productions, where he produces music videos and short films, one of which was funded by Bravo! and played on MuchMusic.

The medal winners nominated by the RCI will be honoured at the RCI鈥檚 Gala dinner Thursday, April 26.

Researcher, author, educator and academic administrator Barbara Sellers-Young (right) , dean of 91亚色's Faculty of Fine Arts, was invited into the spotlight Nov. 18 to accept the Dixie Durr Award for Outstanding Service to Dance Research, given by the international Congress on Research in Dance (CORD) at a special reception during CORD鈥檚 2011 annual conference, Moving Music/Sounding Dance, a joint presentation with the Society for Ethnomusicology, held in Philadelphia, PA.

Named after a long-serving member of the CORD board, the Dixie Durr Award acknowledges the 鈥渟uperlative labour鈥� and 鈥渋ndispensable aid鈥� rendered by the honouree in the field of dance studies. It recognizes the recipient鈥檚 exceptional contributions to research infrastructure and support, which may take many forms such as facilitating the operational efficiency of professional organizations or access to archives and collections, or advancing grantsmanship or publication processes.听

Sellers-Young鈥檚 nominator, University of Washington Dance Professor Juliet McMains, introduced her at the reception. 鈥淥ne of the only dance scholars to have reached the rank of dean, Barbara [Sellers-Young] serves the field of dance studies by representing us brilliantly in the upper ranks of university administration,鈥� said McMains. 鈥淏eyond raising awareness of and respect for dance scholarship through her high-profile leadership positions, she advances the field through her forward-thinking interdisciplinary efforts.

鈥淏arbara is deserving of this award for service to dance scholarship not only because of her work in key organizations, but also because she mentors and inspires others who serve the field. In so doing, she is of highest service as a key force in nurturing the next generation of dance scholars and leaders.鈥�

Sellers-Young herself is a past president of CORD, with a decade of service as a member of the board of directors. "When I attended my fist CORD meeting in 1982, it was the only dance organization of its kind,鈥� she said. 鈥淭hanks in part to CORD, the field of dance studies has since grown a great deal, and many other associations have been established to support its advancement. But throughout all this, CORD has maintained its international importance.鈥�

During her tenure on CORD鈥檚 board, she had the pleasure of serving alongside听Dixie Durr (1940-2007), a renowned scholar and pioneer in dance education.听鈥淒ixie was truly a remarkable human being,鈥� said Sellers-Young. 鈥淪he deeply believed in the importance of dance research and what it offers to society at large. She had openness to new ideas as well as a respect for the past which gave her an uncommon understanding of where dance research has gone and where it is going. Dixie鈥檚 openness and expansiveness of mind contributed to CORD and to the field on an international scale, through her own research and the lengths she would go to facilitate the work of others.

鈥淚 cannot think of a greater honour than to be given an award in her name,鈥� said Sellers-Young.

While Sellers-Young has completed her service on the board of CORD, her colleagues in 91亚色鈥檚 Department of Dance have been following in her footsteps. Professor Patrick Alcedo served as co-chair of CORD鈥檚 awards committee this year, and Professor Danielle Robinson chaired the 2011 conference.

A number of 91亚色 scholars were featured presenters at Moving Music/Sounding Dance, which took place Nov. 17 to 20. Sellers-Young spoke on 鈥淏eing an Arts Dean in Today's University鈥� as part of the plenary panel. Alcedo delivered a paper on his ongoing research into the Filipino Ati-Atihan Festival (see YFile, Jan. 8, 2010). Dance Professor Mary Fogarty spoke on urban dance practices, faculty members Brigitte Cauthery and Shawn Newman discussed interdisciplinary creator Meredith Monk and sexuality in jazz dance, respectively. Graduate dance students Evadne Kelly, Cheryl la France and Shae Neuman presented their own research.听

Professor Louise Wrazen, chair of 91亚色鈥檚 Department of Music, discussed music through the Canadian immigrant experience in a talk titled 鈥淭he Displaced Voice: Assertions of Selfhood and Belonging Amidst Change鈥�. Other contributors from 91亚色鈥檚 music department were faculty members Judith Cohen, who spoke on gender roles in rural Portuguese play-party dances, and Kim Chow-Morris, who shared her research on Chinese musical practice in the Canadian diaspora. Graduate students Mike Anklewicz, Jesse Feyen, Rachel Muehrer and Vivia Keiswetter also presented papers at the conference.

Founded in 1964, CORD fosters an international community of current and future dance leaders through mentorship, advocacy and outreach. It is dedicated to providing opportunities for dance professionals from a broad range of specialties to exchange ideas, resources and methodologies through publications, workshops, and regional and international conferences.

CORD publishes the biannual Dance Research Journal, widely considered the leading publication in its field. The quality of the journal and the organization鈥檚 international reach were what drew Sellers-Young to participate.
