Recipients of the Provostial Fellowships announced

Professors Burkard Eberlein (Schulich), Sapna Sharma (science), Cheryl van Daalen-Smith (health, Liberal Arts & Professional Studies) and Qiang Zha (education) have been appointed 91��ɫ Provostial Fellows.

Appointed for one year, each of the recipients will work to enhance collegial capacity at an institutional level to advance the priorities of the University Academic Plan (UAP) in demonstrable ways. The Provostial Fellowships also provide an opportunity for a diverse group of tenured faculty to gain hands-on experience in university leadership.

“I am thrilled to have these four faculty members dedicating some of their time and energy to help lead the implementation of our UAP. The University will benefit from their expertise and ideas, and I hope they too will find this a valuable opportunity to grow and develop as leaders and institution builders,” said Provost and Vice-President Academic Lisa Philipps. “The launch of Building a Better Future: 91��ɫ Academic Plan 2020-2025 established six exciting and important priorities for 91��ɫ. As a community, we now look to work together in advancing these.”

Fellows will work with the provost and relevant members of the senior leadership on a project or initiative intended to advance one of the UAP priority areas at an institutional level. Each project also seeks to enhance and intersect with the University-wide challenge to elevate institutional contributions to the United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Professor Eberlein’s project, “91��ɫ’s Journey toward Carbon Neutrality,” seeks to identify and advance specific and impactful initiatives that the University can take to reduce its carbon emissions.

Sapna Sharma

Associate Professor, Department of Biology
Faculty of Science

Professor Sharma’s project, “Working Towards Equitable Access to Clean Water,” looks to address the billions of people worldwide, including in Canada, who do not have access to clean freshwater. This project will seek student, faculty and staff collaborations across the University with a goal of raising awareness and identifying solutions to this critical issue, and will culminate with an event celebrating .

Professor van Daalen-Smith’s project, “More than Bees and Trees: Seeing the SDGs in our Curriculum – A Pan-University Community Development Initiative,” seeks to track, weave, inspire and amplify curricular SDG initiatives and advance 91��ɫ’s commitment to interdisciplinarity.

Qiang Zha

Associate Professor
Faculty of Education

Professor Zha’s project, “Reimagining and Transforming Liberal Arts Education with a Trans-Continental Partnership,” looks to explore a new model for practising liberal arts education in the current contexts of mass higher education, knowledge societies and globalization, including the prospects for infusing the concepts derived from the SDGs and promoting global competence.

Round table examines European Union's future in wake of economic crisis

What does the economic crisis in Europe mean for the future of the European Union? That’s the question 91��ɫ faculty from economics, public policy and history will grapple with at a round table discussion tomorrow.

Round table Discussion: The European Union in Crisis? will take place from 2 to 4pm at 305 91��ɫ Lanes, Keele campus.

Containing the recent economic meltdowns of the Greek and Irish economies has provided the EU with one of the greatest tests in its history. With further European economies threatening to come unhinged, the challenges facing Europe seem likely to increase in the weeks and months ahead.

The event, co-presented by the European Union Centre of Excellence at 91��ɫ, the and the Schulich School of Business’ IMBA program, is designed to offer a variety of perspectives on the current EU crisis.

The round table will include adjunct economics Professor of the Schulich School of Business, history Professor Sakis Gekas, Hellenic Heritage Foundation Chair in Modern Greek History in the Faculty of Liberal Arts & Professional Studies, and public policy Professor of the Schulich School of Business, whose work on international governance contributes to the study of mechanisms to coordinate policy-making in fragmented, multi-level institutional settings such as the European Union. Eberlein is also coordinator of the CCGES graduate diploma.

The participants will reflect on the following:

Is the Eurozone/European Project at a crucial turning point?
Is it sustainable in its present form given the huge income inequalities even within the Eurozone and even more among the European Union countries?
Is a new “social contract” within countries and across the Union necessary?
Has the crisis revealed deficits of democracy and leadership in the Union? If so, how are these best addressed?
What are the political ramifications of the crisis at the national and European levels?
Do governments have any room to manoeuvre or are the "financial markets" calling the shots?

91��ɫ research team picks up inaugural grant from the Hennick Centre

91��ɫ's Hennick Centre for Business & Law has given its inaugural Collaborative Research Grants Program award to an interdisciplinary team of professors studying transnational business grievance.

The $5,000 research grant was awarded to Professors Burkard Eberlein and Alan Richardson of the Schulich School of Business and Professor Stepan Wood of Osgoode Hall Law School for their proposal, "The Dynamics of Interaction in Transnational Business Governance Regimes".

The winning team will use the funds to convene a multidisciplinary workshop in Toronto this fall to explore the interaction among transnational business governance initiatives such as civil society codes of conduct, industry self-regulatory standards, transgovernmental networks of officials and complex multi-stakeholder governance institutions.

In addition to the multidisciplinary workshop, the is launching a colloquia series in 2010-2011 for business and law scholars to present works-in-progress and receive feedback from scholars and graduate students from other disciplines. All applicants from the centre's 2010 Collaborative Research Grants Program will be invited to participate in the series.

91��ɫ awarded a European Union Centre of Excellence

91��ɫ has been awarded a grant to establish a European Union Centre of Excellence(EUCE). Recognized for the excellence, breadth and depth of its European Union (EU) studies and scholarly activities, 91��ɫ will receive funding of $480,000 over three years to integrate the University’s existing research, teaching, outreach and networking activities on Europe and the European Union (EU), and introduce and facilitate new activities on the EU and EU-Canada relations.

91��ɫ is recognized as a leader in European studies and has been actively building its concentration in EU studies. Over the past few years, 91��ɫ has attracted numerous new European-focused faculty appointments across a variety of disciplines, including law, political science, business, public administration and humanities. The hub of this activity has been the Canadian Centre for German & European Studies (CCGES), whose affiliated faculty and staff form a natural constituency and administrative backbone for the activities planned by the new EUCE.

“We are tremendously proud of 91��ɫ’s leadership and research excellence in European studies,” said Stan Shapson, vice-president research & innovation. “The activities of the EUCE will promote understanding and knowledge of the European Union as a major player in the global political and economic system, and will be key in promoting the importance of the EU-Canada relationship, its political, economic, security and cultural dimensions, and the widening range of global and regional issues jointly addressed by the EU and Canada.”

With this award, 91��ɫ joins a network of two dozen EUCEs worldwide. 91��ɫ’s EUCE will be hosted by CCGES and directed by Willem Maas (right), Jean Monnet Chair in European Integration and professor of political science and public & international affairs at Glendon College.

The EUCE’s multidisciplinary team also includes:
