The federal government announced Wednesday at 91亚色 that it would contribute up to $15.5 million dollars through its Technology Development Program to the Connected Health and Wellness Project, of which 91亚色 is a major partner.

The Connected Health and Wellness Project is a collaborative project led by a partnership of 91亚色, NexJ Systems and McMaster University. All together the project includes 16 Ontario private sector, academic and not-for-profit research partners. In addition to the federal funding, the project has leveraged more than $23 million in private-sector investments.

From left, 91亚色 President & Vice-Chancellor Mamdouh Shoukri; Dr. David Price, chair of the Department of Family Medicine听at the Michael G. DeGroote School of Medicine, McMaster University; Harvey Skinner, dean of 91亚色's Faculty of Health; Gary Goodyear, minister of state for the Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario; William M. Tatham, CEO of听NexJ Systems Inc.; and Mark Adler,听MP for 91亚色 Centre.听

This project will involve cloud-based software will allow patients to access and share their health records with their family, friends and care teams, including a health coach, to collaboratively manage their health and wellness. The new profession of health coaches will be trained at 91亚色鈥檚 Faculty of Health. This technology will also allow hospitals, physicians and other healthcare professionals to access and update this information on an ongoing basis.

For example, patients with diabetes will be able to track their biometric measurements, such as meals and exercise, using smartphones and share this information easily with their medical teams.

Gary Goodyear, minister of state for the Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario,听makes a funding annoucement at 91亚色

鈥91亚色 is proud to partner with the government of Canada, industry, academic and healthcare providers to deliver a new people-centred, technology-enabled health and wellness model,鈥 said 91亚色 President & Vice-Chancellor Mamdouh Shoukri at the funding announcement at 91亚色鈥檚 Life Sciences Building. 鈥91亚色's creation of a training program and professional standards for the new health coach profession is a first inCanadato combine multiple skill sets in health promotion, disease prevention and behaviour change that highlight91亚色's breadth and depth in health expertise.鈥

Announced by Gary Goodyear, minister of state for the Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario (FedDev Ontario) and Mark Adler,听MP for 91亚色 Centre, the project is a technology platform containing an integrated suite of compatible technologies and apps designed to improve the health of Canadians.

鈥淥ur Government is committed to helping personalize health care for Canadians,鈥 said Goodyear. 鈥淥ur investment will bring integrated health and wellness solutions to market that will provide Canadians with new solutions to better manage their own health using innovative technology developed in our region.鈥

Harvey Skinner, dean of 91亚色's Faculty of Health at the announcement

Goodyear went on to say that we are at the forefront of the next generation in health care management, which will not only reduce costs of delivering health care to our citizens, but it will improve the health care that they receive and ultimately that is what鈥檚 it鈥檚 all about. He also said that the government鈥檚 investment will help 91亚色 and its partners to undertake a collaborative project that may in fact revolutionize health-care delivery, not only in Canada, but ultimately around the world.

As the amount of people with chronic medical conditions grows, along with the need to manage these conditions, the need for this kind of project is clear.

"The combination of mobile technology, electronic health records and behaviour change supported by a health coach will help more people live healthier, longer, and receive timely access to effective health care when needed. This is the essence of people-centred health,鈥 said Harvey Skinner, dean of听91亚色's Faculty of Health. "This partnership is an important step forward for transforming and sustaining health-care and wellness systems in Canada and globally.鈥

More than five billion people globally now have access to mobile technology and that presents a huge opportunity to reach out to people in poorer and remote communities, said Skinner.

The project will help create the conditions to make southern Ontario鈥檚 businesses and not-for-profit institutions global leaders in the development and delivery of integrated electronic health-care software. It is also positioning the region as a leader in advancing health coaching, which is intended to help Canada and other countries around the world find new ways to decrease health-care costs.

The Toronto CFA Society has chosen four听group finalists, including a听team of Schulich School of Business students, in the annual CFA Institute Research Challenge, an equity research competition for student teams from the world鈥檚 top university business and finance programs.

鈥淭he CFA Institute Research Challenge is a unique, global competition and the Schulich team dedicated a lot of hours and a lot of hard work to make it into the local final,鈥 said Pauline Shum, director of the Master of Finance program at Schulich.

鈥淭he CFA Institute Research Challenge asks student teams to work with a CFA [chartered financial analyst] mentor to research, analyze and present a detailed equity research report on a subject company. The Schulich team worked with CFA Dale Powell from Morningstar Canada to research Onex Corporation, a Canadian private equity company.鈥

Above: From left, Rebecca Schoenhardt, Zac Wang, Shane Dixon, Malcolm MacQuarrie and Sean Moore

In the report, the Schulich team had to analyze every aspect of the company to come up with a 12-month valuation target. 鈥淚t was quite the challenge because Onex is a very complex company, but the team demonstrated solid, thorough research and valuation skills, used strong technical writing, presented their data and analysis in a creative fashion and managed team dynamics effectively,鈥 said Shum

On March 1, Schulich students Shane Dixon (MF 鈥12), Sean Moore (MF 鈥12), Malcolm MacQuarrie (MF 鈥12), Rebecca Schoenhardt (MBA 鈥12) and Zac Wang (MF 鈥12) will present their research to a panel of judges at the BMO Customer Care Centre in Toronto. They will compete against teams from University of Waterloo, Wilfrid Laurier University and the University of Toronto, Scarborough.

The winning team will be determined based on the quality of its written analysis and presentation, and will qualify for the regional North American competition in New 91亚色 City on April 10. The regional winner will advance to the global final in New 91亚色 City on April 11.

鈥淏eing selected to represent Schulich in the regional finals of the CFA Institute Challenge is both an honour and a pleasant confirmation of all the hard work our team committed to,鈥 said Schulich team leader Dixon. 鈥淧articipating in the challenge has been a great learning experience. Not only have we developed a greater understanding of the mechanics of a formal research report, general investment research and valuation techniques, but also an appreciation for the virtues of teamwork.鈥

Everyone on the team came to the table with a different background. 鈥淭his gave us a wide range of skills and perspectives to tap into to build the report, encouraging us to think outside the box and it听ultimately concluded in a more well-rounded report. In fact, I鈥檇 say some of the strongest areas of our report resulted from our team brainstorming sessions,鈥 said Dixon.

The CFA Institute Research Challenge is an annual educational initiative designed to promote best practices in equity research among the next generation of analysts through hands-on mentoring and intensive training in company analysis and presentation skills.

Local CFA societies, including the Toronto CFA Society, together with the CFA Institute, hold local competitions involving teams of three to five business and finance students from participating universities who work directly with a local company and a mentor.

More than 2,500 students from 546 universities around the world participated in the 2010-2011 competition, according to CFA Institute.

In the wake of disasters such as the BP oil spill, the term 鈥渃orporate social responsibility鈥 (CSR) is prevalent. But what does it mean and why is it important? And how does it relate to businesses, stakeholders and the public?

In his new book, , Professor (right) clarifies the fundamentals and importance of CSR and details how a conscientious way of doing business is possible in today鈥檚 profit-driven world.

As a teacher of business ethics and corporate social responsibility at the School of Administrative Studies in 91亚色鈥檚 Faculty of Liberal Arts & Professional Studies, Schwartz felt that students needed a book that examined the ethical obligations of a business and which approach is the most appropriate for a company.

鈥淏usiness students 鈥 when they end up becoming managers, executives and CEOs of their company 鈥 are going to be making important decisions,鈥 explains Schwartz. 鈥淚t鈥檚 critical for them to have a theoretical position on this debate, which will help guide them to more ethical and socially responsible decisions.鈥

In his book, Schwartz focuses on several aspects to clarify CSR: the key moral standards that need to be applied in a business decision; the debate between narrow (or profit-based) CSR and broader (or ethics-based) CSR; an examination of the separate and intertwined economic, legal and ethical obligations of a company; and the belief that companies need to engage in providing goods and services that generate value to society in a balanced manner, while remaining accountable to stakeholders.

Looking at four classic, high-profile case studies 鈥 the , , and 鈥 students can apply their own ethical beliefs to decide on the best outcome. 鈥淢any students may discover their theoretical position doesn鈥檛 match what they would do when faced with a real business case,鈥 says Schwartz. 鈥淭hat鈥檚 the main goal of the book: to force students or managers to realize there are implications with their position on social responsibility.鈥

Movie villain Gordon Gekko鈥檚 鈥済reed is good鈥 credo and the rise of Wall Street showed us the conflict between making money and being ethical; it鈥檚 a constant struggle in business. With MBA graduates entering the workforce in unprecedented numbers, how can we expect business people to choose? In his book, Schwartz proves they don鈥檛 have to.

鈥淏usiness students should make money 鈥 it鈥檚 OK to make money. I think the real question is prioritization,鈥 says Schwartz. 鈥淎re you maximizing profit at the expense of harming others? Students need to recognize that they have ethical obligations when they go out into the workplace.鈥

Although Schwartz recognizes that 鈥済ood CSR does not always maximize the bottom line,鈥 it鈥檚 the long-term effects on the business, its employees, customers and the environment that should be taken into consideration. 鈥淓thics should still take priority to the bottom line when there is a conflict,鈥 he says.

Listen to Schwartz speak about his book:

httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nJMpw1ebVos

CSR can be complex, with room for potential misinterpretation. By demystifying the topic, Schwartz听has provided students with information they need to听grasp the concepts and understand how to implement them successfully. Armed with this knowledge, students choose their own way of achieving ethics in business.

鈥淭here is a need for a greater awareness in terms of what the ethical obligations are. It鈥檚 not simply maximizing the bottom line and abiding by the law. Ethics goes beyond the law.鈥

What are the distinctions between corporate social responsibility, business responsibility and philanthropy, and how can a framework be devised to听help businesses define their role in human rights accountability? These are just some the questions that will be tackled today in a lecture by Professor , director of Australia鈥檚 Centre for Applied Philosophy & Public Ethics.

The talk will be held from 1:30 to 3pm in 305 91亚色 Lanes Offices, Keele campus.

Campbell will argue that the structure of a traditional corporate 鈥渂usiness case鈥 should be supplemented by a human rights justification which permits 鈥 and may require 鈥 a corporation to act independently of its economic interests when this is necessary to fulfill its human rights responsibilities.

Experts on entrepreneurs and marketing say there is no substitute for personal contact when launching a small business, and many successful business owners agree, wrote :

While Internet technology and social media such as Twitter and Facebook allow businesses to manage contacts and nurture important professional relationships, it鈥檚 the initial 鈥渉andshake鈥 that makes a lasting impression with retailers and consumers.

. . .

In fact, in-person interactions are the 鈥渟ingle most powerful marketing medium,鈥 says , marketing professor and executive director of 91亚色鈥檚 Schulich Executive Education Centre (SEEC). 鈥淩esearch in the business-to-business world suggests the No. 1 reason for selection of a supplier is the personality of the sales team or seller. This is above the technical specs, marketing form, anything else,鈥 Middleton says.

Deliver on your promises, or risk tarnishing a business relationship built on trust. Enter your new contacts into a customer relationship management system, such as Salesforce, suggests Middleton, and follow up with e-newsletters, blogs, updates or even webinars.

The Centre for Research on Latin America & the Caribbean (CERLAC) is calling for papers for its second International Graduate Student Research Conference.

The first conference attracted over 70 presenters from Canada, the United States, Europe and Latin America, who presented in 20 themed panels over a two-day period. Expert faculty members helped ensure rich debate and provided timely feedback, and selected papers were published in the CERLAC Working Paper series. CERLAC intends to continue the conversations begun in 2008. It is inviting submissions for its second conference to be held March 11 and 12 at 91亚色.

Recognizing the diversity within the region, creative and critical paper, panel and alternative presentation proposals are welcome on any aspect of study of Latin America and the Caribbean as a whole and/or its constituent parts. This conference represents an outstanding opportunity to recognize and explore emergent innovative research by graduate students in all disciplines. This includes, but is not limited to, the social sciences, humanities, fine arts, environmental studies, law and business. CERLAC is also seeking contributors whose work can open fruitful dialogues and exchanges across traditional disciplinary boundaries.

The individual submission application form is available online. This form includes a request for a list of five carefully chosen keywords and a 250-word (maximum) abstract for papers, panels or alternative presentations.

The application form for panel proposals is also available online. CERLAC encourages applicants to submit themed panel proposals as a way to bring colleagues together to discuss current research and advance a particular field.

The deadline for the submission of abstracts and panel proposals is Nov. 15. Those planning to present in alternative formats, for example, film, dance, visual arts or music, they are encouraged to contact CERLAC earlier.

For more information or to submit completed application forms, contact CERLAC at lacsconf@yorku.ca.

Applicants will receive confirmation of acceptance by mid-January. Presenters will be asked to submit their papers by March 1.
