91亚色 graduate students Pierre-Yann Dub茅 Dolbec, Douglas Hunter and Juha Mikkonen are the 2012 recipients of Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships, Canada鈥檚 most prestigious awards for doctoral research. Each will receive听$50,000 per year for three years.

Vanier scholars are selected for their exceptional leadership skills and for realizing the highest standards of scholarly achievement in graduate studies in natural sciences, engineering, and the social sciences and humanities.

Pierre-Yann Dub茅 Dolbec (left) is a doctoral student in 91亚色鈥檚 Graduate Program in Administration, offered through the Schulich School of Business. A world traveller, Dub茅 Dolbec has conducted research, studied and fostered collaborations in more than 30 countries, including India, France and Denmark.

Dub茅 Dolbec has an听undergraduate degree in business administration from Laval University and a master鈥檚 of science in marketing from HEC Montr茅al. His previous research on brand experiences is set to be published in the coming year.

鈥淧ierre-Yann is motivated, highly involved and enthusiastic,鈥 said Allan Hutchinson, dean and associate vice-president graduate, 鈥渁nd he has an exemplary drive for research innovation.鈥

Dub茅 Dolbec's听research is aimed at helping听create public spaces that encourage more socially responsible behaviour when people come together in large groups, perhaps avoiding destructive riots and creating an environment that fosters more peaceful discussion.

Douglas Hunter
(right) is completing his doctoral studies in 91亚色鈥檚 Graduate Program in History. A nationally known and award-winning author, public intellectual, popular historian, journalist and artist,听Hunter is dedicated to educating a national audience by making Canadian history accessible.

鈥淲ith an unusual academic background for a doctoral student in history, Mr. Hunter鈥檚 work in historical nonfiction has been exceptional, incisive and richly informative,鈥 said Hutchinson.

The winner of the National Business Book Award in 2002 for The Bubble and the Bear: How Nortel Burst the Canadian Dream听(Doubleday 2002) in which Hunter analyzed the听rise and fall of Nortel Networks, Hunter is also the听author of six history books on topics as diverse as hockey and North American exploration, and听numerous articles on historians and historical听artifacts. With an undergraduate degree in humanities from McMaster University and an advanced degree in securities, Hunter's career has included working as a journalist, editor, illustrator and graphic designer for newspapers, magazines and publishing houses, before he started his own business in 1993.

Now focused on his doctoral research at 91亚色,听Hunter is exploring 鈥渃ryptohistory鈥, looking at how scholarly histories have influenced and been influenced by public prejudices. Similar to conventional histories, cryptohistorical ideas bolstered the celebration of the racial and cultural superiority of European colonists and later immigrant communities. Douglas is interested in particular in how cryptohistorians appropriated indigenous records, particularly in rock art, oral traditions and archaeological material, to support claims of pre-Columbian European visitors.

Juha Mikkonen (left)
is working toward听a PhD in health policy and equity studies. Working in Finnish, French and English, Mikkonen joined 91亚色 with impressive background in research. With听more than听50 professional and academic contributions geared towards linking academic and non-academic fields, he also has more than a decade working in health promotion in Helsinki and in poverty reduction in 27 European nations.

A 91亚色 research team will comb through digitized 19th-century documents to trace the environmental and economic consequences of international commodity trading during the 19th century.

Led by Professor Colin Coates (left), Canada Research Chair听in Canadian Cultural Landscapes and professor of Canadian Studies at Glendon College,听the听project is expected to cast light on the impacts of an earlier period of economic 鈥済lobalization鈥 as a way of better understanding the challenges of current practices.听It is one of eight projects across Canada that has been granted funding in the 2011 Digging into Data Challenge.

Fourteen teams representing Canada, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom and the United States have been awarded grants to investigate how computational techniques can be applied to 鈥渂ig data鈥 to change the nature of humanities and social sciences research. Each team represents collaborations among scholars, scientists and librarians from leading universities worldwide.

Coates, who is also the director of the Robarts Centre for Canadian Studies at 91亚色, is one of the principal investigators on the project titled Trading Consequences,听which received $125,000 in funding. The project听will examine the economic and environmental consequences of commodity trading during the 19th century and听employs information extraction techniques to study large corpora of digitized documents from the 19th century. This innovative digital resource will allow historians to discover novel patterns and to explore new hypotheses through听structured query and a variety of visualization tools.

"Our team of environmental historians is excited to be partners with the Universities of Edinburgh and St. Andrews in the Trading Consequences project. Canadian economic development has historically been defined by commodity flows, and it is important to understand the environmental impacts of this commerce in the past, just as it is today. The focus on Canadian data will test the techniques created through this collaborative project for mapping the scope and impact of international trade in the 19th century," said Coates.

鈥91亚色 is proud to receive recognition in the 2011 Digging into Data Challenge,鈥 said Robert Hach茅, 91亚色鈥檚 vice-president research & innovation.听鈥淭hese important research projects advance knowledge as researchers work collaboratively and internationally to find new ways to analyze, search for and store data using digital and electronic technologies.鈥

鈥淭he Digging into Data Challenge is an international initiative that enables Canadian researchers to take advantage of the huge digital resources now available and to develop close partnerships with overseas universities,鈥 said Chad Gaffield, president of the Social Sciences听& Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC). 鈥淭hese exciting projects cross both disciplines and national borders; they lead to new insights into human thought and behaviour.鈥

The successful cohort of听projects received a total of nearly $5 million in funding from eight international research funding agencies. SSHRC鈥檚 contribution of听$869,117 will support Canadian researchers from eight of the fourteen teams. 听
