91��ɫ U's Glendon campus serves as host for the Canada Prizes Award Ceremony May 7

Two books authored by individuals with connections to 91��ɫ are among a group of scholarly works by Canadian academics that are in the running for a prestigious Canada Prize.

The winners of the annual awards will be announced prior to the Canada Prizes ceremony on May 7, from 4:30 to 5:30pm, at the Centre of Excellence for French-language and Bilingual Postsecondary Education at 91��ɫ’s Glendon campus. The ceremony will be followed by a reception. The selection of Glendon as the site for the ceremony is the result of a new partnership with the Federation for the Humanities & Social Sciences and 91��ɫ. Members of the 91��ɫ community are invited to attend the Canada Prizes ceremony, RSVP online (Event Code: 882) by May 5.

“Glendon was identified as an ideal location to host this national event in light of its bilingual mandate and its unique focus on education in the humanities and social sciences. We are really excited to be working with the federation to celebrate the excellence of Canadian scholarship in these disciplines,” said Lisa Philipps, AVP research and a member of the federation’s board.

The Canada Prizes are adjudicated by a group of leading academics and public intellectuals, as exemplified by this year’s distinguished jury panel, which includes previous winners of the award. Michael Adams, CEO of Environics and a juror for this year’s Canada Prize in the Social Sciences, will give keynote remarks at the event.

This year, Wilderness and Waterpower: How Banff National Park Became a Hydroelectric Storage Reservoir (2013, University of Calgary Press) authored 91��ɫ Professor Emeritus of History Christopher Armstrong with 91��ɫ Distinguished Research Professor Emeritus of History Viv H. Nelles, and Autonomous State: The Struggle for a Canadian Car Industry from OPEC to Free Trade (2013, University of Toronto Press) by 91��ɫ alumnus Dimitry Anastakis (MA ’95, PhD ’02), are in the running for a Canada Prize.

Wilderness and Waterpower: How Banff National Park Became a Hydroelectric Storage Reservoir explores how the need for electricity at the turn of the century affected and shaped Banff National Park. It tells the story of Alberta's early need for electricity, entrepreneurial greed, debates over Aboriginal ownership of the river, moving park boundaries to accommodate hydro-electric initiatives, the importance of water for tourism, rural electrification, and the ultimate diversion to coal-produced electricity. It is also a lively national story, involving the irrepressible and impetuous Max Aitkin (later Lord Beaverbook), R.B. Bennett (local legal advisor and later prime minister), and a series of local politicians and bureaucrats whose contributions confuse and conflate issues along the way. Autonomous State: The Struggle for a Canadian Car Industry from OPEC to Free Trade provides the first detailed examination of the Canadian auto industry, the country’s most important economic sector, in the post-war period. In his book, Anastakis, who is professor of history at Trent University in Peterborough, Ont., chronicles the industry’s evolution from the 1973 OPEC embargo to the 1989 Canada–US Free Trade Agreement and looks at its effects on public policy, diplomacy, business enterprise, workers, consumers, and firms. Using an immense array of archival sources, and interviews with some of the key actors in the events, Anastakis examines important topics in recent auto industry and Canadian business and economic history.

Awarded annually by the Federation, the celebrate the best Canadian scholarly books—not simply within a single academic discipline, but across all the disciplines of the humanities and social sciences. The prizes are awarded to books that make an exceptional contribution to scholarship, are engagingly written, and enrich the social, cultural and intellectual life of Canada.

Glendon's Centre of Excellence wins a 2013 Toronto Urban Design Award

The Centre of Excellence at 91��ɫ’s Glendon campus has won a 2013 Toronto Urban Design Award.

The centre, which officially opened May 15, 2012, has enabled Glendon to broaden its range of programs and courses in response to the urgent need for increased postsecondary offerings in French in southern Ontario. The centre’s development was supported by a $20-million investment by the Government of Ontario. The expansion project was built on Glendon’s existing facilities and includes more than one dozen new classrooms and lecture spaces, state-of-the art language labs, open study spaces and a 250-seat amphitheatre.

The Centre for Excellence has a fully equipped interpretation lab and training facility, five lecture halls with tiered seating, seminar rooms with LCD projectors and screens, a student cafe, meeting areas, a large art studio, and a rooftop terrace. The facility is approximately 55,000 sq. ft, including both newly added and renovated space.

The historic Glendon campus presented a challenge to architectural firm , selected to lead the construction of the new building. Managing for 91��ɫ was the Campus Services & Business Operations (CSBO) team. Accepting the Toronto Urban Design Award on behalf of 91��ɫ were Kenneth McRoberts, principal of Glendon College, and Richard Francki, assistant vice-president, CSBO.

The company successfully merged the historic buildings with the sleek, new glass walled building. In their decision to award the prize, the jury wrote: “The Glendon Campus has emerged from its reclusive ravine setting of dense forest at Bayview and Lawrence Avenues. The new transparent glass addition to the original red brick campus dramatically alters the first impression of the Francophone component of 91��ɫ and creates a distinctive arrival pavilion and a desirable axial termination to Lawrence Avenue. Interior stairs act as vertical beacons on the exterior, and student spaces pushed to the perimeter animate and soak in the dense greenery of the site. This is a skillful handling of a top of ravine site, creating a new threshold and sense of arrival, while maintaining the proximity and presence of the forest.”

The improvements mean that Glendon is now a preeminent provider of French-language higher education for Francophone learners in Southern Ontario, as well as Anglophone students seeking to study in French. New programs housed in the centre include:

Bilingual and trilingual international Bachelor of Arts (iBA) degrees available across 18 disciplines.
New doctoral program in Études francophones.
Enhanced bilingual activities outside the classroom.
A master’s program in conference interpretation.
A unique, direct-entry Bachelor of Education for future French teachers available at the primary-junior, junior-intermediate, and intermediate-senior levels, offered through 91��ɫ’s Faculty of Education.
Collaboration with Collège Boréal and la Cité collégiale.

Glendon College celebrates research in public affairs and languages

On Thursday, Nov. 8, Glendon College in conjunction with the Office of the Vice-President Research & Innovation, will host a festival of research highlighting Glendon’s strengths in public affairs and languages.

The Principal’s Awards for Excellence in Teaching and Research will also be presented at the event.

“Glendon College is renowned for offering a bilingual education across a wide range of liberal arts disciplines, with a focus on public and international affairs and the study of languages and cultures,” said Robert Haché, 91��ɫ’s vice-president research & Innovation. “This festival of research provides an opportunity for members of the 91��ɫ community to learn more about the diversity and broad range of research initiatives taking place at Glendon College.”

“I am delighted to welcome the 91��ɫ community to this first Glendon Research Festival. Our campus has more than 85 researchers conducting a wide array of projects in fields ranging from mathematics to drama studies, from neuroscience to political science," said Glendon Principal Kenneth McRoberts. The events held this year will feature exciting research on Quebec, education, Aboriginal linguistics and French-English translation. We will also recognize the recent achievements of our colleagues and honour the recipient of the Principal Research Award during an afternoon celebration. We hope that members of the 91��ɫ community can join us for the Glendon Research Festival and take this opportunity to visit Glendon's beautiful new facilities.”

The festival offers four research events:

A bilingual conference on the student mobilization in Quebec will be held from 9:45am to 1pm in the BMO Conference Centre at Glendon College. The conference is organized by Glendon political science Professor Francis Garon and the . Five panellists will explain the social and political origins of the “carré rouge” movement and explore its implications for student tuitions fees and for post-secondary education policies in both Quebec and Ontario. for more details.

The education is presenting a special lecture on linguistic and Aboriginal literacy by expert Barbara Burnaby from Memorial University in Newfoundland. The lecture will be an opportunity to learn about how public policy and educational initiatives can help to teach, develop and stabilize the Innu language in Labrador and elsewhere in Canada. The lecture is at the Glendon Auditorium, 91��ɫ Hall A100, from 6 to 7pm.

Professor Aurélia Klimkiewicz and the Glendon Translation Department are organizing a lecture (in French) on translation theory. Guest speaker Annick Chapdelaine, a translation theorist, translator and literary specialist at McGill University in Montreal, will discuss the challenges of dualist taxonomies in translation. She will draw examples from her work on celebrated American writer William Faulkner. The lecture will take place in the Senior Common Room, third floor, 91��ɫ Hall, from 6 to 6:40pm.

The principal’s office and the Glendon Research Services will host their annual celebration of Faculty research achievements by honouring the recipients of the Awards for Excellence in Teaching and in Research. This celebration provides an opportunity to recognize the success of those colleagues who have received research funding and those who have published books and articles since November 2011. Members of the 91��ɫ community are invited to attend the celebration in the Senior Common Room, third floor, 91��ɫ Hall, from 4 to 5:30pm .

New centre at Glendon expands French-language education

91��ɫ’s Glendon College will officially open the Centre of Excellence for French-language and Bilingual Postsecondary Education in a ceremony on May 15 at 9am.

“I am proud that we are able to provide opportunities for the growing Francophone population right here at 91��ɫ’s Glendon Campus,” said Mamdouh Shoukri, president & vice-chancellor of 91��ɫ. “The Centre of Excellence for French-language and Bilingual Postsecondary Education will help to accommodate an increased student base, will attract more international students and allow 91��ɫ to offer a broad international curriculum so that we can continue to educate Canada’s future leaders.”

The centre will enable Glendon to broaden its range of programs and courses in response to the urgent need for increased postsecondary offerings in French in southern Ontario. The Glendon Campus of 91��ɫ is the only institution in southern Ontario that offers a range of university programs in French. Glendon has established a bilingual Graduate Program in Public & International Affairs – the centerpiece of the Glendon School of Public & International Affairs, Canada’s first fully bilingual graduate school of this type. Along with the Graduate Program in Public & International Affairs, Glendon also offers a double master’s degree with the University of Strasbourg.

Conference examines birth of modern liberalism in Spain

Scholars from Canada, Spain and Mexico will discuss the birth of liberalism amid the tumultuous struggles for independence in Spain during the 1800s, next week at Glendon.

Cádiz, 1812: The Birth of Modern Liberalism will take place Wednesday, March 21, starting at 4pm in the Glendon Hall BMO Conference Centre, Glendon College. The event is free and everyone is welcome to attend as long as seating is available.

There will be presentations by three speakers – 91��ɫ history Professor Adrian Shubert, history Professor José Álvarez Junco of the Complutense University of Madrid and political history Professor Roberto Breña at the Center for International Studies at El Colegio de Mexico – followed by a Spanish musical interlude and a reception offered by Eudaldo Mirapeix, the ambassador of Spain to Canada.

Junco will talk about the political ideas behind the constitution of Cádiz, particularly the contemporary meaning of "freedom" and "nation". A history professor in Madrid, Junco was the former director of the Center for Political & Constitutional Studies, a role that saw him report directly to the deputy prime minister. He was also a member of the advisory committee that prepared the law on Historical Memory of 2007.

Breña will discuss the importance the constitution of Cádiz had in Latin America. The constitution was proclaimed in 1810 in the midst of struggles for independence in most of Spain's American empire, which complicated those struggles.

The idea and funding for the event came from the Embassy of Spain in Ottawa, particularly from Juan Claudio de Ramón Jacob-Ernst, the newly arrived cultural attaché. “Cadiz 1812 is an enormous milestone in the Spanish political and constitutional history. It was our first constitution and arguably one of the most advanced of its time. It marked the passing from the old to the new regime, from dynastic to popular sovereignty, from absolutism to liberalism,” says de Ramon Jacob-Ernst. “It was revolution amidst war."

In the middle of the struggle against the Napoleonic aggressor, elected representatives from all parts of Spain, including the American territories and the Philippines, gathered in a small town besieged by land and sea to assert the sovereignty of the nation.

“It was during this parliament that the word ‘liberal’ was first used as a political label for people who supported constitutional and elected governments. The constitution was intended to apply to Spain and its American colonies, and the colonies sent deputies to sit in the parliament,” says Shubert. He will talk about the constitution's influence in Spain and its colonies, as well as outside the Spanish world, including its reception by one of the forerunners of nationalism in India. “The constitution of Cadiz was also important in other parts of Europe, especially Portugal and Italy."

As de Ramon Jacob-Ernst says, "To put it in Churchillian terms, we could say that Cadiz, 1812 represents our finest hour, the founding stone of our liberal tradition. It was our tragedy and shame that Ferdinand VII, the very same king for whose return from captivity the Spaniards so fierce fully fought, abrogated the constitution when he came back from exile, with the support of the most conservative sections of Spanish society and other European monarchs, fearful of liberalism in their own constituencies.”

The Constitution was revoked following the defeat of Napoleon in 1814, proclaimed again after a revolution in 1820 and revoked again in 1823.

The Portuguese, Italian, Greek, Russian and Latin-American revolutionaries took it as a model for their own constitutions, says de Ramon Jacob-Ernst. “Because of the epic of the moment, the beauty of the text and the failure to make it a living document, the Constitution of Cadiz was soon idealized and look upon ever since with melancholy by Spanish liberals and democrats. Clearly, it laid the foundation for our current Constitution of 1978.”

TEDx91��ɫU: Spreading great ideas with passion

91��ɫ will be making its sophomore contribution to a worldwide movement of talks and idea-sharing by hosting TEDx91��ɫU on March 10 at the Glendon campus.

TED, which stands for technology, entertainment and design, is a series of not-for-profit conferences that started in 1984 in Silicon Valley as a way for employees of tech companies to share their ideas and innovations with their contemporaries.

Featuring two official annual conferences, dozens of global TED events and more than 1,000 independently organized TEDx events, TED is a worldwide movement that brings together the “world’s most fascinating thinkers and doers”. Each TED presenter is challenged to give the “talk of their lives”. Previous TED alumni include former US vice-president and current environmental activist , futurist and author and British celebrity chef and food activist .

The mission of TED is simple: spread great ideas. In its second year, TEDx91��ɫU is featuring talks by members of the 91��ɫ community centred on the various ways in which their passions have impacted the world around them.

Driven by a committee comprised of current students, alumni and staff members, this year’s event will be hosted at Theatre Glendon. Key presenters at TEDx91��ɫU are 91��ɫ President & Vice-Chancellor Mamdouh Shoukri, Vice-President Academic & Provost Patrick Monahan, Toronto city councillor Mike Layton (MES ’06) and 91��ɫ communiations & culture Professor Barbara Crow.

Glendon primatologist talks orangutans, research and rainforests

Prominent Canadian primatologist and Glendon psychology Professor Anne Russon will talk about the Borneo Orangutan Society of Canada (BOS Canada) and their research projects in Kutai National Park this Thursday as part of the Institute for Research & Innovation in Sustainability Speaker Series.

The talk, “Orangutans: Research & Rainforest Protection in Borneo”, will take place Nov. 10, from noon to 1:30pm, at 305 91��ɫ Lanes, Keele campus. There will also be a panel discussion with representatives of BOS Canada. Light refreshments will be served.

The event is designed to help spread the message about the work Russon is doing in Kutai National Park, about the work of BOS Canada and about the many potential opportunities for research available in this incredibly unique and threatened wilderness.

Russon specializes in research on wild orangutan intelligence and has recently taken over Camp Kriu in Kutai National Park in Indonesian Borneo, where she studies a large population of wild orangutans. Her work is represented in Canada as part of BOS Canada.

In 2002, Borneo suffered massive fires. Kutai National Park was heavily damaged and was thought to be a write-off by many conservation biologists. As Russon will discuss during her talk, this was anything but the case. Secondary growth in the forest of Kutai has taken off, providing an incredibly rich habitat for wildlife with faster growing plants and more available fruit than in a primary forest setting.

Consequently, a healthy wild orangutan population is now thriving there. The park, however, is not unthreatened. Across the narrow Sangata River that divides Kutai from private land, there is a coal mine large enough to be seen from space. Like the rest of Borneo, the park risks being re-zoned for timber, mining or palm oil, should its value as a nature reserve come into dispute.

It is important to note that this region of Indonesia represents the second most biologically diverse area of the world after the Amazon. It is quickly being swallowed by the oil, timber and mining industries with little regard for the indigenous peoples who live on the land.

Russon’s profile in the park, as someone living and working there, helps to keep it protected. To continue building the profile of her project and expanding the research activities at Camp Kriu, Russon is welcoming interested students and researchers to join her.

New directors appointed to five research centres

Five 91��ɫ professors have been appointed directors at 91��ɫ research centres.

The new directors are Professor Colin Coates, director of the Robarts Centre for Canadian Studies (RCCS); Professor Laurence Harris, director of the Centre for Vision Research (CVR); Professor Christina Kraenzle, director of the Canadian Centre for German & European Studies (CCGES); Professor David Mutimer, director of the Centre for International & Security Studies (YCISS); and Professor Lisa Philipps, director of the Centre for Public Policy & Law (YCPPL).��

“On behalf of the 91��ɫ research community, I would like to congratulate Professors Coates, Harris, Kraenzle, Mutimer and Philipps on their appointments,” said Robert Haché, 91��ɫ's vice-president research & innovation. “Their leadership expertise will be essential to further strengthening the unique and exciting opportunities for interdisciplinary research, collaborations and partnerships at 91��ɫ’s research centres and institutes.”

Colin Coates (left), Canada Research Chair in Cultural Landscapes, is also professor in the Canadian Studies program at Glendon College and president of the Canadian Studies Network-Réseau d’études canadiennes. His research examines political culture in New France and the history of Canadian utopias. He also conducts research in the area of environmental history, and is an executive member of the Network in Canadian History & Environment – Nouvelle initiative canadienne en histoire de l’environnement, funded by the Social Sciences & Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC). Coates has co-edited and authored several books including, Introduction aux études canadiennes: histoires, identités et cultures (with Professor Geoffrey Ewen, Glendon) and Visions: the Canadian History Modules Project (with Professor Marcel Martel, Faculty of Liberal Arts & Professional Studies, along with four colleagues from other universities), Majesty in Canada: Essays on the Role of Royalty among others. Coates won the Lionel Groulx-Yves Saint-Germain Foundation’s prize for Heroines and History – Representations of Madeleine de Verchères and Laura Secord (co-authored with Cecilia Morgan of OISE).

Laurence Harris (right) is a professor in the Department of Psychology, Faculty of Health, a member of the graduate programs in Kinesiology & Health Science and in Biology, and has served as chair of the Psychology Department. He is the director the Multisensory Integration Laboratory at 91��ɫ, which investigates how information from visual, auditory, vestibular, proprioceptive and tactile senses is combined by the brain to create our perception of body and space. Applications of his research include the design of virtual environments and improving perception in situations where sensory information is impoverished, such as in the unusual environments of underwater or in space, in ageing or in clinical conditions such as partial blindness or Parkinson’s disease. Recently, Harris ran an experiment on the International Space Station looking at astronauts’ perception of orientation. He is the author of more than 100 scientific articles and has edited nine books on topics pertaining to vision including Vision in 3D Environments, Cortical Mechanisms of Vision, Seeing Spatial Form, and Levels of Perception. He is editor-in-chief of the journal Seeing and Perceiving: a journal of multisensory science.

Christina Kraenzle (left) is a professor in the Department of Languages, Literatures & Linguistics (DLLL) in the Faculty of Liberal Arts & Professional Studies. She has served as a CCGES affiliate since 2004 and been a member of the centre’s executive committee since 2005 through her role as the coordinator of the German Studies Program within DLLL. Kraenzle’s research explores modern German literature, film and culture, with a focus on transnational cultural production, migration, travel and globalization. Her recent publications include Mapping Channels Between Ganges and Rhein: German-Indian Cross-Cultural Relations (with Jörg Esleben and Sukanya Kulkarni, 2008) as well as articles in The German Quarterly, German Life and Letters, Transit: A Journal of Travel, Migration and Multiculturalism in the German-Speaking World, and the volume Searching for Sebald: Photography after W. G. Sebald.

David Mutimer (right), a professor in the Department of Political Science, is also the founding editor of Critical Studies on Security and the editor of The Canadian Annual Review of Politics and Public Affairs. He has been a member of YCISS since 1987 and has previously served as its deputy director. Mutimer was also a visiting professor at the University of Geneva in Switzerland and Newcastle University in the United Kingdom (UK), as well as a principal research fellow in the Department of Peace Studies at the University of Bradford in the UK. Mutimer’s research considers issues of contemporary international security through lenses provided by critical social theory and explores the reproduction of security in and through popular culture. His research has focused on various aspects of weapons production and control, and more recently on the politics of the global war on terror, and of the regional wars around the world which are being fought by Canada and its allies. Mutimer is presently leading a SSHRC-funded international research project on arms export controls. His recent published work includes journal articles in Studies in Social Justice, The Cambridge Review of International Affairs and Contemporary Security Policy among others.

Lisa Philipps (left) has been a faculty member at Osgoode Hall Law School since 1996. Prior to that, she held appointments in the faculties of law at the University of Victoria and the University of British Columbia, and has held visiting professorships at Melbourne Law School, University College London and the University of Toronto among other institutions. She served as associate dean research, graduate studies & institutional relations at Osgoode from 2009 to 2011. Philipps' research focuses on tax law, budgets and feminist legal studies. She has published widely on topics, including fiscal transparency, income splitting, gender budgeting, the distributional impact of tax cuts, the tax treatment of unpaid work, charitable tax incentives and more. Most recently she published two co-edited books on Tax Expenditures: State of the Art and Challenging Gender Inequality in Tax Policy Making: Comparative Perspectives.��

Professor Jerzy Kowal,. Glendon's new associate principal academic & research, starts July 1

Professor , chair of Glendon’s Department of Hispanic Studies, will take over as the new associate principal academic & research, starting July 1 for a three-year term.

“Jerzy brings a broad range of experience to the position. He has chaired the Hispanic studies department for several years now. Beyond that, he has been chair of a wide range of committees, from faculty council committees to tenure and promotion adjudication committees,” says Glendon Principal Kenneth McRoberts.

Kowal, who joined the Department of Hispanic Studies as a professor in 2003 and assumed the role of coordinator of the Spanish Language Program, will .

Kowal was acting chair of Hispanic Studies from 2005 to 2006, becoming chair in 2007, working closely with Mougeon, then acting associate principal academic & research. In his new position, Kowal hopes to make a contribution to Glendon’s academic development, in particular to the , a designation received by Glendon from the Ontario government in 2008.

“Building on the outstanding achievements of the Glendon Faculty, I will work to further expand the college’s bilingual reality and enhance the offerings in Spanish. I also hope to make this campus more prominent on the local, national and international levels,” says Kowal. “We need to raise awareness of the research accomplished here, as well as to promote specializations which could attract the media, the francophone milieu and future students.”

Kowal’s vision includes a re-examination of Glendon’s electronic public image to enhance the college’s branding. He is also planning to review the content of Glendon’s BA degree programs with a view to evaluating Glendon’s place in Canada’s academic setting, including its level of technology.

Professor Françoise Mougeon, Glendon's associate principal academic & research, steps down

Glendon’s Françoise Mougeon will be stepping down this July after completing her three-year term as the associate principal academic & research.

“Françoise Mougeon has made a signal contribution to Glendon through her two tenures as associate principal academic & research,” said Glendon Principal Kenneth McRoberts. “Over these several years, Françoise could always be counted on to discharge her responsibilities with a clear sense of purpose, with a concern with rigour and fairness, and with close attention to detail. Through it all, she managed to maintain an active research program, to which she soon can give her full attention with a well-deserved sabbatical.”

Mougeon is completing her second term as associate principal academic & research, having also served from 2003 to 2004. She will be on sabbatical starting July 1, and will return to teaching in 2012.

Mougeon’s research focused on the progress of students in their second language with funding through a Social Science & Humanities Research Council of Canada grant, from 2005 to 2008, and it continues still, in collaboration with a professor at the University of Toronto.

“My hope is to establish a French-as-a-second-language institute at Glendon, enlarging our research to studying students who are not specializing in languages,” said Mougeon, an active member of Glendon’s . “I have always tried to project linguistics and language studies as more than a support subject, but rather an important academic subject on its own.”

Other future projects on her agenda include establishing a centre for advanced studies on francophonies, which she considers a natural development for Glendon, given that relating projects are already in progress and there are a significant number of fellow faculty members on campus – a core group – who are interested in participating.

She has several ongoing projects to hand over with the position. These include an innovative program for francophone students choosing public relations as their future profession. The four-year program, still to be approved, would provide graduates with a Glendon BA and a Cité Collégiale diploma, completed at the same time.
