91ŃÇÉ« will be making its sophomore contribution to a worldwide movement of talks and idea-sharing by hosting TEDx91ŃÇÉ«U on March 10 at the Glendon campus.

TED, which stands for technology, entertainment and design, is a series of not-for-profit conferences that started in 1984 in Silicon Valley as a way for employees of tech companies to share their ideas and innovations with their contemporaries.

Featuring two official annual conferences, dozens of global TED events and more than 1,000 independently organized TEDx events, TED is a worldwide movement that brings together the “world’s most fascinating thinkers and doers”. Each TED presenter is challenged to give the “talk of their lives”. Previous TED alumni include former US vice-president and current environmental activist , futurist and author and British celebrity chef and food activist .

The mission of TED is simple: spread great ideas. In its second year, TEDx91ŃÇÉ«U is featuring talks by members of the 91ŃÇÉ« community centred on the various ways in which their passions have impacted the world around them.

Driven by a committee comprised of current students, alumni and staff members, this year’s event will be hosted at Theatre Glendon. Key presenters at TEDx91ŃÇÉ«U are 91ŃÇÉ« President & Vice-Chancellor Mamdouh Shoukri, Vice-President Academic & Provost Patrick Monahan, Toronto city councillor Mike Layton (MES ’06) and 91ŃÇɫ communiations & culture Professor Barbara Crow.

TEDx91ŃÇÉ«U is supported by the Office of the Vice-President Research & Innovation, the Division of Students, 91ŃÇÉ« Alumni, Student Community & Leadership Development and Glendon College.

Two Glendon professors, both accomplished and established scholars in their respective fields, have been awarded the Principal’s Research Award. Psychology Professor Anne Russon and history Professor Bettina Bradbury received the awards in recognition of their outstanding research accomplishments over the past year. The awards were presented in a recent ceremony to the researchers by Glendon Principal Kenneth McRobert.

Left: Anne Russon

A leading primatologist, Russon works on the psychological abilities of great apes. She is one of the few researchers who study non-human cognition in the field and she discovered that orangutans are capable of imitation. Russon has disseminated her findings through numerous co-authored papers, book chapters and lectures. Her work has received major research grants from the Indianapolis Zoo, the Leakey Foundation and the Natural Sciences & Engineering Research Council of Canada. Her findings have been widely covered in scientific and popular media. She has also served as scientific adviser for several foundations, national parks and documentaries.

Right: Bettina Bradbury

A nationally recognized scholar, Bradbury is a leading feminist historian of family. She has recently published Wife to Widow: Lives, Laws and Politic in Nineteenth Century Montreal. This book uses an impressive quantitative methodology and analyzes a wide range of sources to show how Montreal couples opted for diverse forms of “companionate patriarchy” within their marriages, depending on their social class and cultural heritage.  Bradbury's work is the culmination of years of federally-funded research. Her peers have described her work as “groundbreaking” and as “a fine example of how to get at and illuminate the lives and experiences of ordinary folk.”

The awards ceremony was organized by Glendon Research Services and took place on Nov. 30.

Glendon has a rich history, including a forest containing some rare trees – one of which was brought over from China and once thought to be extinct. Professor Stuart Schoenfeld and Helen Psathas, senior manager, Environmental Design & Sustainability, will talk campus sustainability tomorrow at the launch of the Glendon Campus Project website.

“Environmental History of the Glendon Campus & Forest: Challenges of Conservation & Sustainability in the 21st Century,” part of the Institute for Research & Innovation in Sustainability (IRIS) Speaker Series, will take place Oct. 27, from noon to 1pm, in the Senate Chamber, Glendon campus. Light refreshments will be served.

Right: A path through the Glendon campus forest

Schoenfeld will provide an overview of the website, while Psathas, a senior fellow at IRIS, will provide an update on the forest.

“The project was designed with two goals. First, to share the knowledge about our campus more widely. Second, to document the history and current state of environmentalism at Glendon,” Schoenfeld writes in an on the website.

“The project is intended to be a contribution to the common culture of those who work and study here. We are the custodians of a remarkable place. Knowing more about it, we can better appreciate the gift we have been given of working and studying here. We can also appreciate that the Glendon campus has been taken care of, and that responsibility continues.”

One of the things the new website offers is an overview of how conservation issues and environmental issues have become part of the local culture and how Glendon is responding to the current challenge of sustainability. It has taken much work to keep the upper portion of the Glendon campus landscaped and to perverse the forest in the valley, as well as introduce new environmental practices.
