What does the economic crisis in Europe mean for the future of the European Union? That鈥檚 the question 91亚色 faculty from economics, public policy and history will grapple with at a round table discussion tomorrow.

Round table Discussion: The European Union in Crisis? will take place from 2 to 4pm at 305 91亚色 Lanes, Keele campus.

Right: European Union Central Bank in Frankfurt

Containing the recent economic meltdowns of the Greek and Irish economies has provided the EU with one of the greatest tests in its history. With further European economies threatening to come unhinged, the challenges facing Europe seem likely to increase in the weeks and months ahead.

The event, co-presented by the European Union Centre of Excellence at 91亚色, the and the Schulich School of Business鈥 IMBA program, is designed to offer a variety of perspectives on the current EU crisis.

The round table will include adjunct economics Professor of the Schulich School of Business, history Professor Sakis Gekas, Hellenic Heritage Foundation Chair in Modern Greek History in the Faculty of Liberal Arts & Professional Studies, and public policy Professor of the Schulich School of Business, whose work on international governance contributes to the study of mechanisms to coordinate policy-making in fragmented, multi-level institutional settings such as the European Union. Eberlein is also coordinator of the CCGES graduate diploma.

The participants will reflect on the following:

  • Is the Eurozone/European Project at a crucial turning point?
  • Is it sustainable in its present form given the huge income inequalities even within the Eurozone and even more among the European Union countries?
  • Is a new 鈥渟ocial contract鈥 within countries and across the Union necessary?
  • Has the crisis revealed deficits of democracy and leadership in the Union? If so, how are these best addressed?
  • What are the political ramifications of the crisis at the national and European levels?
  • Do governments have any room to manoeuvre or are the "financial markets" calling the shots?

All are welcome to this event, but attendees are asked to pre-register at euce@yorku.ca.

The second panel in 91亚色鈥檚 鈥淎utomobility鈥 series, taking place today, will examine the changing political economy of the global automobile industry.

The panel, hosted by 91亚色鈥檚 (CCGES) and co-sponsored by the International Business Program of the Schulich School of Business, will feature Scott聽Paradise, VP marketing & business development, Magna International; Jim Stanford, economist for the Canadian Auto Workers Union and 91亚色 political science Professor Greg Chin, author of and member of the 91亚色 Centre for Asian Research.

Panellists will focus on the state of the world鈥檚 automotive and light truck manufacturers in the wake of the global financial crisis: In the United States and Canada, governments stepped in to become majority owners of General Motors, while management of Chrysler was assumed by Italian-based automaker Fiat. In Europe, governments provided incentives to keep consumer demand up and the largest German car company, Volkswagen, began producing vehicles in North America for the first time since the 1970s. Mexico continues to increase its lead over Canada in terms of vehicle production. The same period saw China grow into the world鈥檚 largest auto market, with sales of 18 million vehicles, an increase of 32 per cent over 2009. The panel will explore these and other developments, and their ramifications for the global auto manufacturing sector.

Organized by CCGES affiliates Professor Roger Keil, director of 91亚色鈥檚 City Institute and Professor Emeritus of 91亚色鈥檚 Schulich School of Business, the series aims to shed light on major shifts in the auto industry and society鈥檚 relationship to it.

, director of CCGES, noted that the centre is well-positioned to look at this important theme from a variety of angles. 鈥淭he importance of the automotive industry to the economies of the industrialized world can鈥檛 be overestimated, but it鈥檚 clearly a mistake to view this sector and its prospects in a monolithic way. The panel will consider the situation in a variety of regions and jurisdictions so that a useful overview of the current situation and future prospects emerges,鈥 he said.

The event will run from 4:30 to 6:30pm on the seventh floor of the 91亚色 Research Tower, Keele campus.

A full report on the first panel in the series is available . Panels are open to the public. Attendees are asked to register in advance at ccges@yorku.ca. For more information, visit the website or phone ext. 40003.

Crisis of Capital, Crisis of Theory is the first in a series of student-organized conferences on heterodox political economy, seeking to develop new ways of understanding capitalism and power.

The conference, to be held Oct. 29 to 31 at 91亚色, will have a dual theme: to investigate the global financial crisis and to use the crisis to probe alternative theoretical frameworks in political economy.

Recent events have given political economists plenty to talk about: the bursting of the real estate 鈥渂ubble鈥, the bailout of Wall Street, the collapse of global exports and more. Not only were most theorists unable to foresee the crisis and adequately explain its particularities and implications, they continue to employ concepts and categories that have long-since been challenged.

The conference organizers believe there is great need for new ideas, concepts and analyses, and welcome both panels and individual papers. Abstracts of no more than 250 words should be sent to casp.york@gmail.com by June 30.

Visit the for further information.

The effects of the global economic crisis on poor and working class people around the world will be the focus of the 2010 Historical Materialism conference at 91亚色 starting today and drawing hundreds of scholars to hear some 250 papers.

Speakers will come from Canada, the United States, Mexico, India, South Korea, Britain, Australia and Turkey to lecture at the annual Historical Materialism conference, running until Sunday, May 16, at the Accolade West Building, Keele campus. The conference is associated with the leading English-language journal of critical Marxist research of the same name.

Some of the highlights of the conference include several plenary sessions. Today, from 5 to 7pm, Professor Emerita Johanna Brenner of Portland State University, McGill University Professor Aziz Choudry and Professor David McNally of 91亚色鈥檚 Department of Political Science, organizer of the conference, will discuss 鈥淕lobal Crisis, Working Class Households and Migrant Labour鈥.

Tomorrow, Professor Terry Eagleton, chair of the Department of English & Creative Writing at Lancaster University and聽a literary critic and novelist, will deliver the evening鈥檚 plenary, from 5:30 to 7pm, posing the question, 鈥淚s Marxism a Theodicy?鈥 Eagleton has recently published a book on religion, arguing that social critics ought not to belittle people鈥檚 religious beliefs but, instead, take them seriously as expressing fundamental concerns about the values that inform their lives. In this lecture, he will discuss whether Marxism too depends upon something akin to religious values.

International studies Professor Vijay Prashad of Trinity College in Hartford, Connecticut, columnist and author of The Darker Nations: A People's History of the Third World (New Press, 2007), and Professor Kevin Anderson of the University of California,聽Santa Barbara and author of Marx at the Margins (University of Chicago Press, 2010), will look at 鈥淢arx and the Global South鈥 Saturday, May 15, from 5:30 to 7pm.

鈥淐apitalism, Race and Colonialism鈥 will be the topic discussed by Cherokee intellectual and anti-violence activist Andrea Smith, Professor David Roediger of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and history and American studies Professor Elizabeth Esch of Barnard College on Sunday, May 16, from 2:15 to 3:30pm.

Professor to complete book addressing global financial and acid-backed commerical paper crises

Osgoode Hall Law School Professor Poonam Puri has received a Walter L. Gordon Research Fellowship for 2010-2011.

The prestigious award, periodically presented by 91亚色聽to recognized scholars at the University to complete ongoing outstanding and innovative research, will allow her to devote the coming year to completing Financial Markets in Crisis: ABCP, the Made in Canada Solution and the Future of Canadian Capital Markets.

Right: Poonam Puri

"Professor Puri is greatly admired for her teaching and scholarship as well as the interesting reform and advisory work she has done for securities commissions, self-regulatory organizations, governments and bilateral agencies," said Osgoode Interim Dean Jinyan Li. "This fellowship recognizes her knowledge and expertise and will provide her with the time to complete her latest book."

Puri is among Canada鈥檚 most respected researchers on corporate law, securities law, corporate governance, and corporate and white-collar crime.聽Appointed to 91亚色鈥檚 Osgoode Hall Law School in 1997, she has co-authored or edited three books and written numerous articles and reports.聽Her rigorous research is firmly grounded in the real-time of policy-making, rendering her expertise widely requested by Canadian and international governments and regulators, including Industry Canada, the Ontario Securities Commission, the聽Senate of Canada, the Wise Persons鈥 Committee on Securities Regulation and the International Finance Corporation of the World Bank Group.

鈥淧rofessor Puri鈥檚 timely proposal addresses the recent global financial upheaval and the asset-backed commercial paper crisis. It promises to provide insight about both global and Canadian banking practices,鈥 said David Dewitt, 91亚色's associate vice-president research (social sciences & humanities), and chair of the Walter L. Gordon Research Fellowship selection committee. 鈥淗er book will make a valuable contribution to existing literature on Canadian financial markets. The selection committee was impressed by her proposal鈥檚 interdisciplinarity, innovative thinking, clarity and logic.鈥

The fellowship, named in honour of the late聽Walter L. Gordon, former chancellor of 91亚色, provides researchers with the opportunity to complete works or projects that require a significant amount of time by relieving them of teaching and other University responsibilities.

"The selection committee was also impressed by the quality of each of the applicants and the significant research ideas brought forward," said Dewitt. 鈥淓very one of them deserved funding. The applicant pool鈥檚 strength speaks to 91亚色鈥檚 expanding research culture and the important recognition the fellowship provides to support that leading-edge research."
