Vice-President Research & Innovation Robert Hach茅 shared feedback received from the community consultations and explored draft themes for 91亚色鈥檚 new Strategic Research Plan at an open forum on Nov. 20 at the Keele campus.

In his presentation, Hach茅 noted that the feedback from the community consultations indicates the 91亚色 community identifies that the plan should be inclusive,听 individual research should be supported and the plan should articulate a strong, ambitious vision with clear priorities, while providing flexibility to explore new opportunities.

Robert Hach茅

More than 1,200 members of the 91亚色 community have engaged in the consultation process to date, with more than 60 members of the 91亚色 community attending the open forum.

鈥淏ased on the input received from the 91亚色 community, we have developed six draft themes that are reflective of the broad spectrum of research conducted at the University,鈥 said Hach茅.听 鈥淲e invite the community to provide feedback and input on the themes as we work towards creating a new Strategic Research Plan that will help us achieve our vision of becoming a more recognized research-intensive University 鈥 an ambition reflected in the White Paper and University Academic Plan.鈥

Those present at the forum were asked to share their thoughts about the themes. In summary, the forum participants said they welcomed the inclusiveness of the draft themes and expressed appreciation for for the comprehensiveness and scale of the SRP consultations.听 Among the comments听offered, there was听 the aspiration that the importance of international research and the role of organized research units be reflected in the plan. Additionally, participants spoke to the importance of highlighting graduate and undergraduate student engagement in research.

Hach茅 explained that the goals of the consultation process are to engage the 91亚色 community in an open, collaborative and ongoing discussion about the University鈥檚 core research values and to develop a plan that is meaningful to the community.

He was joined in the open forum by the Strategic Research Plan facilitators Celia Haig-Brown, who is a professor in the Faculty of Education, and Gary Miller, instructor in the MBA program at the Schulich School of Business and Schulich Executive Education Centre.

As part of the ongoing nature of the consultation process, 91亚色 students, staff and faculty are invited to take the or on the development of the Strategic Research Plan. 听Visit the听听听website to view the draft themes.

The Office of the Vice-President Research & Innovation (VPRI) is launching a consultation process to seek input from the 91亚色 research community on the development of a new strategic research plan听for 2013-2018.听 The launch of the consultation process was announced in Senate on Thursday.

VPRI will be advised in the consultation process by a Strategic Research Plan听Advisory Committee comprised of individuals from the University and community, whose membership will be announced shortly.听The goal is to engage the community in a discussion of听goals and values to provide shape to听a听strategic research plan听that will set the vision for the continuing development of research at 91亚色 for the next several years. The expectation is to provide the community with a draft of the plan before the end of 2012, with听a final version going to Senate for approval in spring 2013.

鈥淭he establishment of a new strategic research plan will help to advance research intensification broadly at 91亚色 and identify areas of opportunity for growth and development,鈥 said听Robert Hach茅 (left), vice-president research & innovation. 鈥淭he plan will help to foster the support of research excellence across the University while providing a strategic framework for driving our research reputation forward in areas of opportunity.鈥

In order to create a document with the broadest possible support, VPRI听is inviting听all members of the 91亚色 community to contribute to the development of the strategic research plan by sharing their points of view throughout the consultation and development process.听 The听University community is invited to participate in workshops, focus groups, town hall meetings and other events being organized or through听an online form that is available .

Through an extensive process of broadly-based consultations, VPRI will arrive at a plan that sets well-defined goals within an aspirational vision that is strongly supported by the University academic community, as represented by Senate.

The goals of the strategic research plan听consultation process are:

  • To engage in a collaborative, University-building exercise that articulates a clear valuation and appreciation of research at 91亚色听and its integration into all aspects of the听fabric of the University;
  • To build a strong, broadly accepted aspirational vision听for听the development of research based on a comprehensive consultation process with the University community and external stakeholders;
  • To appropriately identify and articulate areas of opportunity in the strategic development of research across the institution.

Hach茅, in collaboration with the Strategic Research Plan听Advisory Committee, invites all members of the听community to be an engaged part of a comprehensive consultation process that will help 91亚色 continue to move forward in research excellence and scholarship.
