Researchers at 91亚色 have been awarded more than $5.5 million from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC).听The grants, part of more than $107 million in funding and awards recently announced in the Insight Development Grants and Insight Grants Competition, will support 91亚色 research that improves the quality of life of Canadians, while advancing knowledge and building understanding of complex socio-cultural and economic issues.

The announcement of the recipients of more than 760 grants to power new research initiatives was delivered Monday by Greg Rickford, federal minister of state (science and technology).

hache鈥淪SHRC鈥檚 investment provides a foundation for our researchers in the social sciences and humanities to conduct cutting-edge fundamental research that identifies and applies solutions to some of the most pressing problems facing society today,鈥 said Robert Hach茅 (left), 91亚色鈥檚 vice-president research & innovation. 鈥淩esearch at 91亚色 is research with an impact and research that makes a difference.鈥

Thirty-seven 91亚色 researchers received more than $5.5 million to fund their research projects through SSHRC鈥檚 Insight Grants and Insight Development Grants programs.

The funding was granted for research covering a wide range of topics, including:

  • Schools, safety and the urban neighborhood;
  • Riots in the Maghreb: A socio-anthropological contribution of dissenting voices;
  • From norm takers to norm shakers and makers? A comparative study of tax transplants in China and India;
  • Wrestling with tradition: community, authority and change in law and religion;
  • Multimedia and transmedia texts, cultural change and youth readers; and
  • Transitioning from a fossil(ized) to a bio-based economy: A case study of biofuels in the Canadian Context.

鈥淭his investment in social sciences and humanities research is a cornerstone to building Canada鈥檚 capacity for innovation,鈥 said Chad Gaffield, president of SSHRC. 鈥淭hrough the Insight Grants and Insight Development Grants, we are supporting the highest levels of research excellence. This research will generate knowledge about the past and present that will lead to innovative solutions for today鈥檚 most pressing social, cultural, technological, environmental and economic issues, and improve the lives of Canadians.鈥

Researchers, graduate students and postdoctoral fellows at 91亚色 have been awarded more than $9.7 million from the Social Sciences & Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC).The grants, part of over $200 million in funding and awards recently announced, will support 91亚色 research that improves the quality of life of Canadians, while advancing knowledge and building understanding of complex socio-cultural and economic issues.听

On Monday, Gary Goodyear, minister of state (science & technology) announced the significant investment by the Government of Canada in basic research and research training in the social sciences and humanities.

鈥淲e are very pleased with SSHRC鈥檚 investment to support the work of 91亚色鈥檚 researchers in the Social Sciences & Humanities,鈥 said, Robert Hach茅, 91亚色鈥檚 vice-president research & innovation. 鈥淭his funding allows our researchers to grow and strengthen their innovative research programs while contributing to Canada鈥檚 knowledge base.鈥

Thirty-two 91亚色 faculty members received more than $3.8 million to fund their research projects through SSHRC鈥檚 Insight Grants and programs.听 In the Insight Grants competition, 91亚色 enjoyed an exceptional 39 per cent success rate, which is 12 per cent higher than the national success rate for the competition.听

The funding was granted for research covering a wide range of topics, including:听

 

  • Institutional changes and adaptive search behaviour of business groups in developing economies
  • Industrialization, human capital and democracy
  • Teaching for mathematical understanding: The potential of 'folding back' as a pedagogical tool
  • Second generation success and marginalization: the impacts of race, gender and place on employment and social mobility
  • Multilingualism and ethnic identity: An international perspective
  • The roles of lead banks and institutional investors in secondary loan sales
  • Modernist Literary Musics

Graduate students and doctoral fellows benefited from the announcements as well: 听167 91亚色 master鈥檚 and doctoral students have won more than $5.8 million in scholarships and fellowships.听More than 2,400 graduate and postdoctoral projects across Canada received funding.听

鈥淐anada鈥檚 position as a world leader in research excellence leads to discoveries, innovations and advanced skills that drive job creation and opportunities in the knowledge economy,鈥 said Goodyear. 鈥淭hrough Economic Action Plan 2012, our government provided additional resources to support advanced research at universities and other leading research institutions, which will build on previous investments to further strengthen Canada鈥檚 research advantage.鈥

鈥淭his research is the key to innovation and to building knowledge for Canada鈥檚 future,鈥 said Chad Gaffield, president of SSHRC. 鈥淭hrough this funding support, we are generating insights and developing innovative solutions for today鈥檚 social, economic and cultural issues, while training the next generation of researchers and leaders.鈥

The grants, part of $237 million in funding and awards recently announced, span across nine 91亚色 Faculties and support research that improves the quality of life of Canadians, while advancing knowledge and building understanding of complex socio-cultural and economic issues.

鈥淲e are very pleased with 鈥檚 investment in humanities and social sciences research to support 91亚色鈥檚 researchers,鈥 said Robert Hach茅, 91亚色鈥檚 vice-president research & innovation. 鈥淭his funding will allow our researchers to make important contributions to our country鈥檚 knowledge base, while addressing key social issues facing Canadian society.鈥

Forty-three faculty members received more than $2.9 million in standard research grants.

Researchers听received more than $1.6 million in insight development grants, public outreach and dissemination grants, and research/creation grants in fine arts to support听fifteen projects.

91亚色听received more than $480,000 for research workshops and conferences. In the November competition in this category, SSHRC funded 100 per cent of听fourteen 91亚色 projects, including:

  • Modern Slavery, Human Rights and Human Development
  • Museums, Film, Musealization in German culture
  • Critical Issues in International Refugee Law Research
  • Changing Frontiers of Ecological Knowledge:听A Critical Dialogue of Asian Ecologies on the Edge
  • 3-D Cinema
  • The Politics of Labour in Canada

At 91亚色, 179 graduate students also received more than $5 million in scholarships and fellowships. Altogether 2,500 graduate and postdoctoral projects across Canada received funding.

Eight 91亚色 researchers also received more than $1.5 million in partnership development grants, which encourage collaboration in social sciences and humanities research. This funding supports national and international partnerships between 91亚色 and other universities, non-governmental organizations and governments. In this competition, 91亚色鈥檚 success rate was 17 per cent higher than the national success rate. Seven out of the eight awards were associated with 91亚色鈥檚 research centres.
