Four professors at 91亚色 had their Canada Research Chairs (CRCs) renewed by the federal government yesterday, bringing $5.6 million to invest in their research at the University.

Tier 1 CRCs were renewed for professors ,听 and . Professor was awarded an Advancement Chair, taking her from a Tier 2 to a Tier 1 CRC. Each Tier 1 CRC attracts $200,000 annually in federal funding, over a seven-year period, for a total of $1.4 million per chair.

The funding will allow Flett, Hessels, Tsotsos聽and Vosko to continue their respective research in personality and health, computational vision, atomic physics, and the political economy of gender and work.

鈥淔ederal government investment in research is crucial for Canadian universities because we are competing with the rest of the world to attract top researchers,鈥 said Stan Shapson, vice-president research & innovation at 91亚色. 鈥淭hrough these investments, researchers at 91亚色 are able to contribute significantly to new discoveries, public policy and economic development, and national and international dialogue across the full range of disciplines.鈥

91亚色鈥檚 renewals were part of $275.6 million announced by聽Tony Clement, federal minister of Industry,听to fund 310 new or renewed CRCs at 53 Canadian universities. 鈥淭he Harper government is continuing its longstanding commitment to invest in science and technology to create jobs, strengthen the economy and improve the quality of life of Canadians,鈥 said Clement. 鈥淔or the past 10 years, the Canada Research Chairs Program has brought breakthroughs in clean energy, the control of infectious disease, business management, and digital technologies.This funding will help strengthen Canada鈥檚 capacity for leading-edge research while, at the same time, building economic opportunities for Canadians.鈥

Clement made the announcement at the start of a conference to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the CRC program. The conference, which began yesterday at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre, continues today.聽Vosko took part in the 鈥淭hinking Ahead: A look at what the future holds for Canada鈥 panel discussion on Wednesday. 91亚色 Professor (right), Canada Research Chair in Art, Digital Media聽& Globalization, will participate in today's聽Art, Technology and Society panel.

91亚色 has 28 research chairs, including the four renewals announced yesterday.聽Here are details on the work of the four:

Gordon Flett (left), CRC in Personality and Health (Tier 1), examines personality as the key to many health problems stemming from chronic stress exposure. Certain aspects of the personality trait of perfectionism can be particularly harmful. His team studies risk and resilience factors across the lifespan. He and Paul Hewitt co-developed the Multidimensional Perfectionism Scale, a model reconstruction of both the personal and interpersonal components of perfectionism. Research based on the model has firmly established that perfectionism has personal and interpersonal components and is associated with various forms of maladjustment, including health problems, depression, anxiety and suicidal tendencies. His research agenda also explores the relationship between perfectionism and psychological disorders, including eating disorders, postpartum depression and recovery from physical illnesses. A professor of psychology, Flett is associate dean, research and graduate education, in 91亚色鈥檚 Faculty of Health.

Eric Hessels (right), CRC in Atomic Physics (Tier 1), is researching the difference between matter and antimatter. His 91亚色 team is working with researchers from Harvard University on a method to trap the antiatoms long enough to conduct experiments. This work is being done in conjunction with the international ATRAP (Antihydrogen Trap) collaboration. Hessels鈥 research also involves measuring the energies and orbits of helium atoms to provide the most accurate measurement of the 鈥渇ine structure constant,鈥 which determines the strength of electric and magnetic forces between charged objects. He is a Distinguished Research Professor of Physics at 91亚色.

John Tsotsos (left), CRC in Computational Vision (Tier 1), integrates the fields of visual psychology, computer vision, robotics and visual neuroscience to investigate new models of human visual mechanisms and how they may lead to intelligent seeing machines. His research falls into three main themes: visual attention in humans and computer systems, visually guided mobile robotics, and computer vision. He designed the first computerized motion recognition system, used in cardiology, and developed the Selective Tuning Model for visual attention, widely considered the leading model for consolidating current understanding of the process of visual attention. He has also designed an intelligent, visually guided wheelchair intended for physically disabled children. A past director of 91亚色鈥檚 internationally recognized , Tsotsos is the Distinguished Research Professor of Vision Science in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at 91亚色.

Leah F. Vosko (right), CRC in the Political Economy of Gender and Work, examines the contours of precarious employment to foster new statistical, legal, political and economic understandings of this phenomenon. Two of the chair鈥檚 principal projects involve constructing a research database on gender, work and labour market insecurity in Canada in comparative perspective 鈥 the 鈥 and overseeing a research alliance comprised of community and university researchers studying employment standards modernization in Canada and internationally. A professor of political science and a co-director of 91亚色鈥檚 Centre for Research on Work and Society, Vosko also teaches and supervises students in women鈥檚 studies, sociology, public policy administration and law, socio-legal studies, social and political thought, health equity, and communications & culture.聽Her most recent book, Managing the Margins: Gender, Citizenship and the International Regulation of Precarious Employment, was published earlier this year by Oxford University Press, UK.

91亚色 media relations staff Janice Walls and Melissa Hughes, frequent contributors to 91亚色 Research News, have been recognized by the annual Council for the Advancement & Support of Education (CASE) Circle of Excellence awards. The pair received a top-level gold award in a worldwide competition for a series of five 91亚色 news releases that won a gold medal in the News writing category.

The releases won 91亚色 and its researchers recognition in media outlets across Canada and around the world, including publications such as The New 91亚色 Times, the Washington Post and news organizations in the United Kingdom and Asia.

Drug has been linked to neurodevelopmental defects associated with autism

A 91亚色 study has shown for the first time how the drug misoprostol, which has been linked to neurodevelopmental defects associated with autism, interferes with neuronal cell function.

It is an important finding because is similar in structure to naturally occurring prostaglandins, which are the key signalling molecules produced by fatty acids in the brain.聽The drug is聽used to prevent ulcers in people who take certain arthritis or pain medicines, including aspirin, that can cause ulcers. It protects the stomach lining and decreases stomach acid secretion.

Past clinical studies have shown an association between misoprostol and severe neurodevelopmental defects including autism symptoms. Those studies looked at cases in Brazil in which women misused the drug early in pregnancy in unsuccessful attempts to terminate their pregnancies.

The 91亚色 study examined mouse neuronal cells to discover how the drug actually interferes at a molecular level with prostaglandins, which are important for development and communication of cells in the brain.

鈥淓arly in the first trimester of pregnancy, neuronal cells reach out to communicate with one another,鈥 says Dorota Crawford, a professor in the School of Kinesiology & Health Science in 91亚色鈥檚 Faculty of Health.聽鈥淥ur study shows that misoprostol interferes with this process by increasing the level of calcium ions in neuronal extensions, which reduces the number and length of these extensions. It prevents the cells from communicating with each other. If changes in prostaglandin level alter the development or differentiation of cells, it may have a physiological impact.鈥

Crawford and Javaneh Tamiji, who undertook the research for her master鈥檚 thesis in the Neuroscience Graduate Diploma Program at 91亚色, co-authored a study published online in the journal Biochemical and Biophysical Research Communications: 鈥淧rostaglandin E2 and misoprostol induce neurite retraction in Neuro-2a cells鈥.

There is no indication that women in Canada are misusing misoprostol to terminate pregnancies, and in fact the drug is used safely for other purposes such as treatment and prevention of gastrointestinal ulcers. However, during early neuronal development the drug misoprostol or other environmental factors such as infections or inflammations, which can also increase the level of prostaglandins, may interfere with normal brain function, says Crawford.

Crawford and Tamiji focused on the drug misoprostol because they had evidence from聽clinical studies of the neurotoxic effects of the drug. They used misoprostol and the naturally occurring prostaglandins side by side in their study and found that both compounds produced the same effects on neuronal cell function.

The study shows that misoprostol interferes with the prostaglandin pathway in a dose-dependent manner 鈥 in other words, the higher the dose, the greater the problems created.

鈥淲hat that indicates to us is whether it is infection that will activate it or whether it is the drug, it will cause the same effect,鈥 says Crawford.

Now that it has been shown that misoprostol affects interaction between cells, the next step will be to do animal studies on mice to examine the physiological impacts on particular parts of the brain, she says.

Crawford鈥檚 lab is one of very few in the world that has adopted a multidisciplinary approach to the study of autism spectrum disorders, using molecular techniques to understand the link between causative biological factors (genes and environment) and the behavioural expression.

Protecting ourselves from backyard mosquito bites may come down to leaving the vacuuming for later, a study from 91亚色 shows.

Rather than vacuuming the grass clippings out of catch basins before adding treatments to control mosquitoes, municipalities should leave the organic waste in place, the research found.

鈥淐atch basins are a permanent source of mosquitoes on every street. By putting in cleaned catch basins we saw an average of 20 per cent of the mosquito larvae make it to the adult stage over the duration of the study. But that number was reduced to less than 3 per cent just by leaving the organic debris in the catch basins until the fall, when mosquito season is over,鈥 says Norman Yan, a professor in 91亚色鈥檚 Department of Biology.

Yan and former 91亚色 master鈥檚 student Stacey Baker (MSc 鈥08) co-authored a study published in the current issue of the Journal of the American Mosquito Control Association. They were surprised by the results of the research, conducted by Baker in 2005 on residential streets in the Greater Toronto Area.

鈥淲e predicted that S-methoprene would work better in the catch basins that had been cleaned. We found the opposite 鈥 that S-methoprene binds to organic material, which holds it in the catch basins longer so that mosquito larvae are exposed to it for longer,鈥 says Baker.

The research may have implications not only for our comfort levels, but for disease control, says Yan. The rate and the number of positive mosquito pools have been lower in the past two years in Ontario, but it remains a problem in some areas of the United States, and warmer temperatures and a wet season could increase the risk in Ontario. The West Nile virus is not carried by all mosquitoes but it can lead to severe symptoms and even death.

Public health units in Ontario determine if and when they will larvicide based on their surveillance of the level of risk. S-methoprene, which is used in Canada only for control of West Nile virus, is still being used in hundreds of thousands of catch basins in the GTA, but there has been no thought given to the cleaning schedule, according to the study authors. The study demonstrates that scheduling both the application of S-methoprene and the removal of debris makes sense, they said, and it may be worthwhile to clean the catch basins every two years instead of annually.

Leading researchers from across southern Ontario will converge on 91亚色 on Friday to discuss the role that muscle plays in metabolism, heart health, aging and disease.

The first annual Muscle Health Awareness Day, organized by 91亚色鈥檚聽 Muscle Health Research Centre, will bring together the latest findings on the contribution made by heart muscle and skeletal muscle to overall health and wellbeing.

A wide range of collaborative research on muscle biology research is being done at 91亚色鈥檚 Muscle Health Research Centre, by researchers from the Faculty of Health and the Faculty of Science and Engineering; scientists are examining muscle development, disease, metabolism, blood supply, injury and regeneration, as well as adaptation of muscle to exercise. Using molecular, cellular and whole-body techniques, a major goal is to learn how Canadians can benefit from exercise through adaptations in the metabolism and structure of muscle, says Professor David Hood, director of the Muscle Health Research Centre and Canada Research Chair in Cell Physiology.

Researchers from the Centre will be joined by scientists from the University of Toronto, Sick Kids Hospital, the University of Guelph, McMaster University and Brock University, who will present their findings during four sessions. More than 50 poster presentations will also be on display at Muscle Health Awareness Day, showing the wide variety of muscle research being done by graduate students.

The four sessions during Muscle Health Awareness Day include:

  1. Metabolism 鈭 will provide a description of important protein and fat metabolism pathways in health and disease. Emphasis will be on how enzymes responsible for synthesizing new proteins in muscle cells are activated, and how fats are taken up into muscle cells and metabolized. This has important implications for muscle wasting conditions, as well as obesity.
  2. The Cardiovascular System 鈭 will examine how heart muscle adapts to stress in various ways.聽 The session will focus on understanding how heart muscle cells respond to stressors such as exercise and heat and how novel methods can be used to identify important proteins that are found in cardiac disease conditions. It will also provide information about heart and smooth muscle signaling during hemodynamic stress, such as high blood pressure.
  3. Muscle Development and Satellite Cells 鈭 will describe some of the important molecules that regulate the process by which large, mature muscle cells develop from small precursor cells that fuse together, allowing muscle contraction and providing the energy for contraction to take place. Research will also be presented about the importance of precursor cells (called satellite cells) in adult muscle, and how they respond to exercise and aging.
  4. Exercise, Metabolism and Disease 鈭 will provide an understanding of important enzymes in the mitochondria that regulate carbohydrate and fat metabolism, and will relate mitochondrial function (the powerhouse of the cell) to states of physical activity and obesity in youth. Information will also be provided about muscle diseases that lead to exercise intolerance and muscle cramps.

91亚色 Professor Ellen Bialystok has been for outstanding career achievement.

Bialystok, a Distinguished Research Professor in 91亚色鈥檚 Department of Psychology, Faculty of Health, is known internationally for her research on language, bilingualism and cognitive development. She received the award this morning from the , which administers the .

One of the most important research prizes in the world, the $100,000 Killam Prize is annually awarded to five eminent Canadian scholars for their distinction in health sciences, engineering, humanities, natural sciences and social sciences. Bialystok was recognized for her work in the social sciences category.

The first in her field to research claims of cognitive deficits in bilingual children, Bialystok discovered that bilingual children and adults have distinct advantages over unilingual people when completing both linguistic and nonlinguistic tasks. Her research is now revealing that this advantage continues for bilingual people as they age.

She has also been recognized by the international linguistics community for her body of work on theories of language processing and on practical issues related to foreign and second language education.

鈥淭he Killam Prize recognizes Professor Bialystok鈥檚 groundbreaking contributions to psychology and confirms the international excellence of her achievements,鈥 said 91亚色 President & Vice-Chancellor Mamdouh Shoukri. 鈥淗er success contributes to the growing national and international leadership of 91亚色鈥檚 faculty in health related-research as they respond to medical, social, and environmental challenges facing Canadians and people around the world.鈥

Bialystok was awarded a in 2001. She is a . In November, she received the 91亚色 in recognition of her research contributions.

Bialystok has developed new methodologies for studying the role of cognitive processes on second language learning as well as the impact that knowing a second language has on cognitive aging.

鈥淏y studying people of all ages, and using both behavioural and neuroimaging approaches, Professor Bialystok is changing our understanding of language acquisition and literacy, as well as cognition and aging," said Faculty of Health Dean Harvey Skinnner. "Her research, and the collaborative research of many other faculty researching developmental and cognitive processes, reflects the Faculty's goals of innovative research that helps keep more people healthier, longer."

Bialystok has recently published research on how bilingualism boosts children鈥檚 focus. She has also researched how bilingualism can delay the onset of dementia.

Cutting calories may speed the progression of the fatal neuromuscular disease Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) because of changes that occur at the molecular level, a study from 91亚色 has found.

The research, which looked at the effects of caloric restriction in a mouse model of ALS, found that restricting caloric intake to 60 per cent of the usual mouse diet significantly hastened the onset and progression of ALS, as well as death. It is the first study to demonstrate that caloric restriction in animal models of ALS produces molecular-level changes that lead to cell death.

The study was published today by the open access peer reviewed journal Public Library of Science (). Former 91亚色 graduate student Barkha P. Patel, supervised by assistant professor Mazen J. Hamadeh (left), led the research at 91亚色鈥檚 Muscle Health Research Centre, in collaboration with researchers at McMaster University.

鈥淩esearch has shown that restricting calories can extend lifespan in animals, so we were surprised to find during an earlier study with the same animal model of ALS that it actually hastened the clinical onset of the disease,鈥 said Hamadeh, of the School of Kinesiology and Health Science in 91亚色鈥檚 . 鈥淚n this study, we set out to discover how caloric restriction actually led to changes at the molecular level.鈥

ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig鈥檚 Disease, is characterized by degeneration of motor neurons in the brain and spinal cord and is associated with an increase in oxidative stress 鈥 the physiological stress on the body that is caused by damage from free radicals that are not neutralized by antioxidants.

The study sought to unravel the mechanism behind the acceleration of the clinical onset and progression of ALS when calories are restricted. It found that caloric restriction shortens lifespan through an increase in protein involved in lipid damage, inflammation and cell death.

If the results from the animal model of ALS are extrapolated to patients with the disease, caloric restriction would be contraindicated, Patel said.
