The search committee will be drafting an advertisement to announce the start of the search, which will appear shortly in various publications and websites. In addition, the committee is working on聽a position profile to describe the priorities over the next five years, and what they聽are seeking in candidates in terms of experience, background and qualifications. The committee is soliciting input on聽the following questions in order to help shape the position profile:

• What are your aspirations for the VPRI portfolio over the next five to聽10 years? What do you see as the issues and challenges facing the University during this period?
• What do you think the search committee should be seeking in a leader in terms of professional background and experience, personal attributes, qualifications and credentials?

History is not just about dusty old scrolls, manuscripts and 聽things of the past 鈥撀爄t has real relevancy in today鈥檚 world. Just watch the video prepared by 91亚色鈥檚 Department of History in the Faculty of Liberal Arts & Professional Studies, which aired recently at a conference in the United States.

What makes 91亚色鈥檚 Department of History so relevant? 鈥淲e鈥檙e always looking to serve the community and I think that鈥檚 one of the hallmarks of our department, the fact that we are socially responsive to changing trends and the changing population of this city,鈥� Jonathan Edmondson (left), chair of 91亚色鈥檚 Department of History, tells viewers.

The video, one of 14聽created for history departments across the US and Canada, was televised on聽the online聽 channel and on hotel room聽and hallway plasma screens during聽the 124th annual meeting of the American Historical Association in San Diego. The 91亚色 video highlights the diversity of research and subject areas students have access to in聽the Department of History. With the Archives of Ontario and the Tubman Institute for Research on the Global Migrations of African Peoples on the Keele campus,聽91亚色 is ideally situated for historical research.

鈥淲e鈥檝e created an environment where some quite unusual topics can be studied,鈥� history Professor Craig Heron (left), past president of the Canadian Historical Association, tells viewers. 鈥淭here is a range of some really interesting work done by some really creative graduate students.鈥�

The video also looks at the department鈥檚 commitment to public history and outreach and how that has led to creative graduate initiatives. Two of the initiatives are the Web site, which distributes previously published material to a broader audience, aiming at policy-makers, the general public and educators, and Left History: An Interdisciplinary Journal of Historical Inquiry and Debate, the聽peer-reviewed journal, featuring leftist and Marxist perspectives on a variety of historical topics.
