When it comes to conveying the important research聽to the broader community, clear language summaries are the best choice, this according to a new聽article published in the peer-reviewed journal, Scholarly & Research Communications.

尝别诲听产测 David Phipps (left), executive director of research & innovation services, and colleagues from 91亚色's Knowledge Mobilization Unit (KMb), the group put聽pen to paper to highlight their聽experiences in summarizing academic research according to clear language writing and design principles over the past four years and how that practice has made research more accessible to the community.

The article titled, "A Field Note Describing the Development and Dissemination of Clear Language Research Summaries for University-Based Knowledge Mobilization", highlights best practices for the development, evaluation and dissemination of clear language research summaries as tools for research outreach, research communication and knowledge mobilization.聽 It is co-authored by Michael Johnny, manager, 91亚色's Knowledge Mobilization Unit, Krista Jensen, knowledge mobilization officer at 91亚色聽and Gary Myers, a community based researcher and author of the KMbeing.com blog.

鈥淲orking with our partners and faculty to identify relevant research helps make 91亚色's research accessible and useful to our community partners" says Phipps.

91亚色 piloted institutional knowledge mobilization with the University of Victoria in 2005 under a grant from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) and the Social Sciences聽& Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC). Since then, 91亚色 has grown its knowledge mobilization collaboration with the University of Victoria to include the other four 搁别蝉别补谤肠丑滨尘辫补肠迟-搁茅蝉别补耻滨尘辫补肠迟搁别肠丑别谤肠丑别 universities: Memorial University of Newfoundland & Labrador, Universit茅 du Qu茅bec 脿 Montr茅al, University of Guelph and University of Saskatchewan.

91亚色 currently has聽more than聽220 clear language research summaries in a series titled聽ResearchSnapshot, which is published on聽聽blog. Working with a cohort of senior undergraduate work study students, the University's KMb Unit produces between 40 to 50 research summaries every summer.

"91亚色 is proud of the work of our award-winning KMb Unit in connecting researchers and students with community partners for social innovation.聽 As a recognized leader in knowledge mobilization initiatives, 91亚色鈥檚 work and reputation in this field continues to grow both nationally and internationally,鈥 said Robert Hache, 91亚色's vice-president research & innovation. 鈥淭he article written by David Phipps and his KMb colleagues provides a framework for others interested in learning more about best practices and 91亚色鈥檚 initiatives in this area.鈥

"SRC and its readers are very interested in the communication and use of knowledge as mediated by processes such as knowledge mobilization," says Rowland Lorimer, SRC editor and director of the Canadian Centre for Studies in Publishing at Simon Fraser University. "The work of David Phipps and his knowledge mobilization colleagues at 91亚色 is of growing interest to scholars and research partners who are interested in communicating and using knowledge to benefit Canadians. SRC is pleased they have chose to publish their work with us."

On June 12, 2012, 91亚色's Knowledge Mobilization Unit聽received the Knowledge Economy Network Best Practice Award from the European-based (KEN). The award, which was part of a group聽announced by the network was聽presented during the network's annual forum, which took place June 11 and 12,聽in Maribor, Slovenia.

KEN is an European nonprofit association that acts as a "network of 16 European regions and countries, interested in boosting their knowledge-based competitiveness, exchanging good practice, encouraging collaboration and implementing new knowledge into innovative products in聽response to a larger, global need to enhance and support efforts to build knowledge economy, not only at European, but at a truly international level."

In addition to national level awards recognizing innovation in the four domains of education, research & development, innovation, entrepreneurship, plus one media award,聽the three Best Practice Awards announced this year went to:

  • European Affairs Fund, AP Vojvodina, based in Serbia, which聽KEN described as "an example of good practice in multicultural education"
  • Knowledge Mobilization Unit聽at 91亚色,聽which was聽cited by the聽network as聽"an example of good practice of a new scheme run by the University and involving all triple helix [government, community and industry] partners"
  • South East European Centre for Entrepreneurial Learning, based in Croatia, which KEN highlighted as聽"an example of good practice in successful regional cooperation in training and education"

鈥淭his recognition from a European agency is testament to the growing international reputation that 91亚色 is gaining for its work in knowledge mobilization,鈥 said Robert Hach茅, 91亚色鈥檚 vice-president research & innovation. 鈥淜nowledge mobilization connects researchers and students with partners, so that their research and expertise can be applied to real-world challenges, in addition to helping to inform decisions about public policy and social services.鈥

Under the leadership of David Phipps, director of聽research services & knowledge exchange in聽91亚色's Knowledge Mobilization Unit, the unit has been developing and delivering knowledge mobilization services to faculty, students and their research partners since 2006. The unit has聽received funding from the Social Sciences聽& Humanities Research Council and the Canadian Institutes of Health Research.

Working with 240 faculty, 142 students and 205 partner organizations, the Knowledge Mobilization Unit has brokered more than聽250 collaborations between the academy聽and non-academic partners. These partnerships have attracted more than $1 million in聽sponsored research funding specifically for聽91亚色 research, and over $1 million in funding for community partners.

Michael Johnny, manager of the Knowledge Mobilization Unit, supports all large-scale grant applications, which in turn has secured over $17 million in external research support for 91亚色 faculty and their partners. Some of these collaborations are maturing into social innovations that help find new ways to address persistent social and economic challenges.

  • In 2009 Nottawasaga Futures, a nonprofit community development agency, called 91亚色鈥檚 Knowledge Mobilization Unit to help a rural business in making green decisions. The collaboration helped launch the .
  • 91亚色 supported a collaboration between graduate student Tanya Gulliver and the Parkdale Activity聽& Recreation Centre in 2007. Research conducted by this partnership is now helping to inform , which will assist more than 2.5-million people cope in an聽increasingly warming world.
  • When the Regional Municipality of 91亚色 called the Knowledge Mobilization Unit to seek support in evaluating how they delivered services to immigrants, 91亚色 supported a collaboration between two faculty members and municipal policy-makers. The evaluation undertaken provided evidence to the regional government, which in turn informed the聽region's聽decision to invest more than $20 million to expand the聽Welcome Centre program. The investment created聽86 jobs and provided聽48,000 services to new Canadians living and working in 91亚色 Region, which is home to Canada鈥檚 fastest-growing newcomer population.

"Knowledge mobilization identifies and supports these collaborations," said Phipps. "The welcome centres, Heat Registry and Green Economy Centre are examples of social innovation."

As a result of these and other stories of the impact of research, Phipps is widely sought as a speaker on 91亚色's model for knowledge mobilization, which is increasingly becoming recognized as a critical component of engaged scholarship and learning.

91亚色鈥檚 Knowledge Mobilization Unit, on behalf of ResearchImpact - Canada鈥檚 Knowledge Mobilization Network, has been working with the Social Sciences & Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC) and United Way Centraide Canada (UWCC) to develop a new initiative known as the Community-Campus Collaboration (CCC).

CCC is a new national initiative that creates supportive environments and works to remove institutional barriers to collaboration between the community and postsecondary educational institutions.

The initiative and the partners who made it possible are a subject of interest for David Johnston, the governor general of Canada.

On May 26, Johnston referred to the CCC initiative in his keynote address,聽, delivered to delegates at the 2012 Congress of the Humanities & Social Sciences. 鈥淭he community-campus collaboration fostered by United Way-Centraide and the Social Sciences & Humanities Research Council is quite simply a superb initiative," said Johnston. 鈥淚t will help us ensure that social innovation is a key component of Canada鈥檚 innovation landscape. This initiative also provides us with a catalytic vehicle to apply knowledge and develop experiential learning.鈥

to view Johnston's address to Congress.

Over the past year, in response to a call for feedback on CCC initiatives at a meeting held in April 2011 attended by Johnston, Centraide Canada and Research Impact, working with 91亚色 and UWCC, conducted a scan of university-community collaborative projects led by the United Way. 聽The organizations identified a total of 88 projects of interest.

Four of the projects identified by the scan were selected for further research to better understand the barriers and enablers of effective community and university collaboration. 91亚色 Vice-President of Research & Innovation Robert Hach茅 invested in funding the research, which was carried out by 91亚色 education Professor Steven Gaetz and 91亚色's Knowledge Mobilization Unit.

One of the projects selected for further investigation was a collaboration between 91亚色 and the United Way of 91亚色 Region. This collaboration, which started in 2010, resulted in the creation of Strength Investments, a funding mechanism that has allowed UWYR to invest some $300,000 into citizen-led approaches to address community opportunities. For more information, read the article on Strength Investments that is available on the Mobilize This! Blog.

91亚色, SSHRC and UWCC took their collaboration a step further and developed a paper on the CCC concept. The paper provided a platform for a round-table discussion that was held on May 26, and attended by the governor general. Hach茅 and David Phipps, director, Research Services & Knowledge Exchange, were invited to participate in the round-table discussion, which included representatives from the Canadian Federation of Humanities & Social Sciences (CFHSS), SSHRC, United Way Centraide Canada and national stakeholders at the Congress of the Social Sciences & Humanities. The purpose of the meeting was to engage partners in advancing CCC.

Robert Hach茅

鈥淭he CCC initiative encourages communities and universities to work more closely together on engaged scholarship and learning,鈥 said Hach茅. 鈥91亚色 has many community-university assets to bring to this conversation, including our national leadership in knowledge mobilization, the TD Centre for Community Engagement and all of the initiatives funded by the Academic Innovation Fund that support students working in collaboration with community partners.鈥

鈥91亚色's Knowledge Mobilization Unit has worked closely with our local community and public sector partners, especially UWYR, to develop services that support knowledge mobilization and engaged scholarship, and we are pleased to play a leading role in this pan-Canadian initiative,鈥 added Phipps.

A joint diplomatic commitment to social innovation between Canada and the United Kingdom that was formalized May 9 has a connection to work underway at 91亚色 in the area of knowledge mobilization.

The signed by David Fast, Canada鈥檚 minister of international trade and minister for the Asia-Pacific Gateway, and Stephen Green, the United Kingdom鈥檚 minister of state for trade & development, highlights the importance of collaboration between the two countries in the area of social innovation. Social Innovation takes new ideas and puts them into practice for the public good. 聽David Phipps, director of 91亚色's Research Services and Knowledge Exchange and leader of 91亚色鈥檚 Knowledge Mobilization Unit and 搁别蝉别补谤肠丑滨尘辫补肠迟-搁茅蝉别补耻滨尘辫补肠迟搁别肠丑别谤肠丑别 (RIR), Canada鈥檚 knowledge mobilization network, played a role in realizing the commitment by both countries to social innovation.

David Phipps

It began in September 2011, when British Prime Minister David Cameron met with Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper. The pair discussed many matters, including international diplomacy, national security, the economy and innovation. During their meeting, they decided to build on their countries鈥 mutual interests in science and innovation by committing to a joint innovation statement. to view a video of Cameron's address to the Canadian Parliament.

In November 2011, some two months after the prime ministers agreed to draft the joint innovation statement, Phipps travelled to the UK for a series of meetings on knowledge mobilization and social innovation. While there, he met with representatives from the at the University of Edinburgh and the at the University of Brighton.

鈥淎t that time, I wrote in [a blog about ResearchImpact and knowledge mobilization] about my meetings ,鈥 said Phipps. 鈥淲hat I didn't write about at the time were my meetings聽with agencies interested in social innovation. I met with the , a global leader in social innovation, and with聽, the UK鈥檚 innovation foundation.鈥

Accompanying Phipps to the meetings was Caroline Martin, trade commissioner for science and technology with the Canadian High Commission in London. 鈥淲e discussed the importance of social innovation to Canada and the United Kingdom, a conversation we then continued with Nicole Arbour, team lead for the Science & Innovation Network at the British High Commission in Ottawa. Together we explored opportunities for collaboration on social innovation with Canadian organizations such as and the , organizations whose leadership in social innovation parallels that of NESTA and the Young Foundation.鈥

Phipps learned that Martin and Arbour were assisting with drafting the Joint Innovation statement that was called for by the prime ministers. 鈥淥ur conversations helped inform the decision to include social innovation in the text of the Joint Innovation statement,鈥 said Phipps.

Once completed, the Joint Innovation statement included this declaration: 鈥淭he Participants will consider taking joint initiatives in the following priority areas [including] Social Innovation: Working with academic, government and civil society partners to leverage research and innovation activities for greater societal benefits.鈥

Phipps said the joint diplomatic commitment to social innovation between Canada and the UK has found another home with the Governor General of Canada David Johnston. On Feb. 17, 2012 he wrote about in an opinion piece published in The Globe & Mail. 鈥淪o how do we bring about a smart and caring world that is at once prosperous, sustainable and resilient?鈥 wrote Johnston. 鈥淥ur ability to work together 鈥 to practise the diplomacy of knowledge 鈥 will be the key to our success.鈥

"Social Innovation is one outcome of knowledge mobilization for which 91亚色 is developing an international reputation,鈥 said Robert Hach茅, 91亚色鈥檚 vice-president research & innovation. 鈥淣ew discoveries are being made to address persistent social challenges through social innovation. Our conversations with the British and Canadian High Commissions helped inform the decision to include social innovation in the text of the Joint Innovation statement. The outcome reflects the growing international appreciation of the work of 91亚色鈥檚 Knowledge Mobilization Unit and its leadership role in ResearchImpact, Canada's knowledge mobilization network, in working to turn research into action."

鈥淐ollaborating for social innovation is now recognized as a priority for Canada and for the UK,鈥 said Phipps. 鈥淩IR-91亚色 was there and will be there working with colleagues from Canada and the UK to support knowledge mobilization as a process that enables enhanced social innovation.鈥
