91��ɫ-led research projects and graduate students awarded more than $19.5 million from SSHRC and partners

Five 91��ɫ-led research partnerships have received $14.3 million through the��(SSHRC) Partnership Grants program, Partnership Development Grants program and partnership contributions from external research partners participating in the projects. In addition, more than $5.2 million was awarded to 145 91��ɫ master’s and doctoral students to support scholarships and fellowships from SSHRC’s Talent Program.

Stephen Gaetz (right), professor and associate dean in the Faculty of Education, has received more than $2.5 million in funding over seven years to lead “Canadian Observatory on Homelessness”, with more than 27 researchers – including Professor Janet Mosher at Osgoode Hall Law School, Professor Valerie Preston in the Faculty of Liberal Arts & Professional Studies (LA&PS) and Professor Stan Shapson in the Faculty of Education − and 29 partner organizations. The project, a non-partisan research and policy partnership, aims to evaluate current policy directions and programmatic approaches to preventing and reducing homelessness, address key policy questions, and support the development and implementation of effective and sustainable solutions to homelessness in communities across Canada. The goal is to mobilize research on homelessness so it has a greater impact on policy and practice, leading to more effective solutions to homelessness. The project, which will also receive more than $2.5 million in matching funding and contributions from partnering organizations, will leverage the collaborative, research and knowledge mobilization capacities of participating individuals and organizations.

Anna Hudson (left), professor in the Faculty of Fine Arts, has received more than $3.5 million over six years to lead a major project titled “Mobilizing Inuit Cultural Heritage: a multi-media/multi-platform re-engagement of voice in visual art and performance”, with 10 researchers – including Professor Susan Dion in the Faculty of Education and Professor Angela Norwood from the Faculty of Fine Arts – and nine partner organizations. The goal of the project is to conduct collaborative research on the contribution of Inuit visual culture, art and performance to Inuit language preservation, social well-being and cultural identity. The project will address the current disconnect for Inuit today between orality – being the voice that defines the self in relation to others – and materiality – being the environment in which one lives well together through three primary objectives: access to advanced information and communication technologies, connection of Inuit voice to objects of Inuit cultural heritage and expanded creation of Inuit cultural capacity. It will receive an additional $1.9 million in matching funding and contributions from partnering organizations.

Leah Vosko (right), Canada Research Chair in the Political Economy of Gender and Work and political science professor, LA&PS, has received more than $2 million in funding over five years to lead a major national project with 33 researchers – including Professor Mark Thomas in the Department of Sociology and Professor Eric Tucker at Osgoode Hall Law School − and 16 partner organizations. The project, titled “Closing the Enforcement Gap: Improving Employment Standards Protection for People in Precarious Jobs”, will examine the role of employment standards enforcement in ensuring minimum conditions in areas such as wages, working time, vacations and leaves for workers in precarious jobs in Ontario, characterized by job insecurity, low income and limited access to regulatory protection. The objectives of the project, which will receive more than an additional $1.3 million in matching funding and contributions from partnering organizations, are to map the nature and scope of employment standards violations and document enforcement practices to identify regulatory challenges and develop alternative models of enforcement that may be applied in Ontario and other jurisdictions within Canada and internationally.

“We are delighted by the results of these recent SSHRC competitions, enabling 91��ɫ to maintain our track record in leading the country in the Social Sciences & Humanities Research Council of Canada’s large-scale awards competitions valued at $1 million or more,” said Robert Haché, 91��ɫ’s vice-president research and innovation. “The projects led by 91��ɫ Professors Stephen Gaetz, Anna Hudson and Leah Vosko enable our researchers to work together with research partners to address persistent, social and economic challenges facing our society today. It will also enable our researchers and graduate students to make important contributions to our country’s knowledge base.”

Two 91��ɫ researchers were also awarded more than $397,000 in SSHRC funding through the Partnership Development Grants program.��The program encourages applicants to work collaboratively with partners to develop research in the social sciences and humanities.��This funding will support partnerships between 91��ɫ researchers and Canadian and international universities, a charitable organization and an international association.

Gary Goodyear, federal minister of state for science and technology, announced the funding on Friday, May 31, at the launch of the annual Congress of the Humanities & Social Sciences.�� In total, more than $63 million is being awarded over a period of seven years to support 78 research teams across the country through SSHRC’s Partnership Grants and Partnership Development Grants. An additional $104 million from SSHRC’s Talent Program will support more than 3,700 master’s, doctoral and postdoctoral scholarships and fellowships.

An analysis conducted by the Strategic & Institutional Research Initiatives Unit, in the Office of Research Services at 91��ɫ, revealed that between 2006 and 2013, 91��ɫ researchers received more SSHRC awards valued at $1 million or more than any other institution in Canada. SSHRC’s large-scale awards offered between 2001 and 2013 have included the Community-University Research Alliance (CURA), Major Collaborative Research Initiatives (MCRI), the Strategic Knowledge Clusters and the SSHRC Partnership Grants.

SSHRC awards over $3 million to 91��ɫ-led projects

Seven 91��ɫ-led research partnerships have received a total of $3,647,551 through the��'s Partnership Grants program and Partnership Development Grants program.

91��ɫ��psychology Professor Debra Pepler, together with Shelley Cardinal of the Canadian Red Cross, has received over $2.4 million in funding over five years from SSHRC to lead a major national project: "Walking the Prevention Circle: Researching Community Capacity Building for Violence Prevention".�� They are joined by Susan Dion, a 91��ɫ education professor, and other researchers and partners. The project will examine how communities mobilize and build capacity through the Canadian and Australian Red Cross Societies' Walking the Prevention Circle (WTPC)��– a model for violence prevention in Aboriginal communities. The project will receive more than $1.2 million in matching funding from partnering organizations.

Pepler, a Distinguished Research Professor in the Faculty of Psychology and core member in 91��ɫ’s LaMarsh Centre for Child and Youth Research, will lead a 10-member research team as they study the process of community capacity building.

“This grant provides an extraordinary opportunity to collaborate with communities in learning how they engage with the Red Cross community capacity-building process to share knowledge, promote stronger relationships, and move from the cycle of violence resulting from colonization to the circle of healing based in Aboriginal traditions,” said Pepler.

Project partners include the��Canadian Red Cross, Australian Red Cross, CAMH Centre for Prevention Science, Chiefs of Ontario, Prince Albert Grand Council, Promoting Relationships and Eliminating Violence Network (PREVNet), Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) and Victoria Native Friendship Centre.

Six 91��ɫ researchers were also awarded more than $1.1 million in SSHRC funding through the Partnership Development Grants program, with more than an additional $1 million in total funding from matching partner contributions.��The Partnership Development Program encourages applicants to work collaboratively with partners to develop research in the social sciences and humanities.��This funding will support partnerships between 91��ɫ researchers and Canadian and international universities and non-governmental organizations (NGOs), government departments, domestic and international associations, among others.

“The results of these recent SSHRC competitions are a testament to the exceptional track record 91��ɫ has in leading interdisciplinary and collaborative research projects,” said Robert Haché, 91��ɫ’s vice-president research and innovation. “The project led by 91��ɫ Professor Debra Pepler and Shelley Cardinal of the Canadian Red Cross, in collaboration with local and global partners, is designed to address and prevent the cycle of violence and improve the quality of people’s lives.”

The announcement was made on Friday, May 25��by Gary Goodyear, federal minister of state for science and technology, while speaking at the launch of the annual Congress of the Humanities and Social Sciences.�� In total, more than $70 million is being awarded over a period of seven years to support 92 research teams across the country through SSHRC’s Partnership Grants and Partnership Development Grants.

91��ɫ researchers receive more than $11.9 million in SSHRC funding

Researchers, graduate students and postdoctoral fellows at 91��ɫ have been awarded more than $11.9 million from the Social Sciences & Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC).

The grants, part of $237 million in funding and awards recently announced, span across nine 91��ɫ Faculties and support research that improves the quality of life of Canadians, while advancing knowledge and building understanding of complex socio-cultural and economic issues.

“We are very pleased with ’s investment in humanities and social sciences research to support 91��ɫ’s researchers,” said Robert Haché, 91��ɫ’s vice-president research & innovation. “This funding will allow our researchers to make important contributions to our country’s knowledge base, while addressing key social issues facing Canadian society.”

Forty-three faculty members received more than $2.9 million in standard research grants.

Researchers��received more than $1.6 million in insight development grants, public outreach and dissemination grants, and research/creation grants in fine arts to support��fifteen projects.

91��ɫ��received more than $480,000 for research workshops and conferences. In the November competition in this category, SSHRC funded 100 per cent of��fourteen 91��ɫ projects, including:

Modern Slavery, Human Rights and Human Development
Museums, Film, Musealization in German culture
Critical Issues in International Refugee Law Research
Changing Frontiers of Ecological Knowledge:��A Critical Dialogue of Asian Ecologies on the Edge
3-D Cinema

At 91��ɫ, 179 graduate students also received more than $5 million in scholarships and fellowships. Altogether 2,500 graduate and postdoctoral projects across Canada received funding.

Eight 91��ɫ researchers also received more than $1.5 million in partnership development grants, which encourage collaboration in social sciences and humanities research. This funding supports national and international partnerships between 91��ɫ and other universities, non-governmental organizations and governments. In this competition, 91��ɫ’s success rate was 17 per cent higher than the national success rate. Seven out of the eight awards were associated with 91��ɫ’s research centres.

“The Government of Canada recognizes the importance of investing in research in order to keep Canada at the forefront of the global economy,” said Gary Goodyear, minister of state for science and technology, in announcing the awards. “We are supporting research that will improve the quality of life of Canadians, while helping our universities develop, attract and retain the world’s best researchers.”

“Social sciences and humanities research is about people – who we are as human beings, what we do and why. By deepening our understanding of ourselves and the world around us, and by sharing that knowledge with government, businesses and communities across the country, our researchers continue to make significant contributions to Canada’s prosperity and our quality of life,” said SSHRC president Chad Gaffield. “Through these investments, we ensure that Canada’s best scholars receive the support they need for their research and that they share their knowledge with those who can put it to use across society.”
