Now you can send it to the Research Forecast, a new online tool designed to assist researchers with submitting their ideas for stories about upcoming discoveries, publications or events to communications staff in the Office of the Vice-President Research & Innovation (VPRI) and the (C&PA).

The purpose of the Research Forecast is to ensure that听communications staff in VPRI and C&PA are aware of important research underway so that they can first determine its newsworthiness and target audience, and then proactively promote it through C&PA Media Relations to external media, and through YFile to the 91亚色 community.

91亚色 Researchers should consider submitting upcoming news to the Research Forecast if they have advance information about a significant discovery, publication, exhibit, event or other research product that will be made public in the coming weeks or months. Researchers,听if听they have knowledge of a research project that will be of interest to the wider public, even though it may still be听in progress with no findings or products available yet, should also submit the information to the Research Forecast.

Researchers are asked to submit their story ideas and/or notice of upcoming events and publications as far in advance as possible to facilitate the appropriate development time needed for stories when media opportunities are identified. VPRI and C&PA staff will work with researchers to respect publication embargoes.

Professor Bettina Bradbury of history and women鈥檚 studies at Glendon and the Faculty of Liberal Arts & Professional Studies will speak on Twists, Turning Points and Tall Shoulders: Studying Canada and Feminist Histories Wednesday, Oct. 24, from 4 to 6pm in the Senate Chambers, ninth floor North Ross Building. Everyone is welcome to attend.

Bettina Bradbury

In this 鈥渋ntellectual biography鈥�, Bradbury will reflect on her career in and contributions to the study of Canada. An award-winning historian of Qu茅bec and family history, she has served 91亚色 in various roles, including as chair of women鈥檚 studies and as director of the graduate program in history, among others. She recently received the Faculty of Graduate Studies Teaching Award.

The event is also a celebration of Canadianist research at 91亚色 featuring a first collective book launch for Canadian themed publications produced in 2011 and 2012 by members of the 91亚色 community. It is an opportunity for the Robarts Centre to highlight the breadth of Canadianist research at 91亚色.

The (IJS) is the world鈥檚 foremost archive and research facility in the field of jazz. Its comprehensive holdings comprise original scores, recordings, personal papers, photographs and memorabilia from a host of leading jazz artists, as well as archives of record companies and jazz-related institutions and organizations from 1920 to the present. In support of its mission to document, preserve and disseminate the history of jazz, the IJS develops conferences, broadcasts, publications, exhibitions and educational programs, and supports the work of individual researchers through the Morroe Berger 鈥� Benny Carter Jazz Research Fund.

Brett, who recently returned from her trip to Rutgers, and Bruce, who visited last fall, found the experience invaluable. They had high praise for both the IJS collections and the staff who assisted them in their research.

For Brett, a well-known performer and recording artist who has taught jazz vocals in the Department of Music at 91亚色, the IJS鈥檚 Ella Fitzgerald collection was a treasure trove. The iconic singer is one of several performers Brett is researching as part of her studies on the great American songbook. Her dissertation will focus on transcriptions and analyses of Fitzgerald鈥檚 first four full-length scat solos.

In the Ella Fitzgerald collection, Brett found boxes of scores and sheet music, and many packages from hopeful songwriters begging Fitzgerald to perform their work. Brett was also able to touch the gown Fitzgerald wore for her legendary performance with Tommy Flanagan at the 1977 Montreux Jazz Festival, a show that was recorded on video.

鈥淚 know how the gowns I wear for my own performances hold my energy before and after a gig,鈥� Brett said. 鈥淚t was deeply moving to be in such close proximity to her personal belongings.鈥�

Bruce spent five days immersed in the archives, shuttling between the stacks, files and photocopier, and bringing home a full dossier of materials to review.

鈥淭he librarians were incredible,鈥� Bruce said. 鈥淭hey would always come up and ask about my work, run back to storage, and return with additional materials they thought might help. As a research trip, it was exciting and inspiring 鈥� and a lot of fun!鈥�
