鈥淚 am delighted to announce the appointment of six new 91亚色 Research Chairs and congratulate them on this significant accomplishment,鈥� said Robert Hach茅, 91亚色鈥檚 vice-president research and innovation. 鈥淩ecognized for their leadership in scholarship, research and creative activities, these Research Chairs reflect the spectrum of excellence in research & scholarship undertaken across the University.鈥�

Tier 1 Chairs

Natel Bergeron

Nantel Bergeron, professor in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics, Faculty of Science, was awarded a Tier 1 91亚色 Research Chair in Applied Algebra.聽 Bergeron is one of the pioneers in the development of the theory of combinatorial Hopf algebras that serve as a conceptual laboratory in which researchers can understand and solve complex problems from other areas of science and mathematics. His research program will help to better understand the complexity of algorithms in computer science and mathematics and bring further insights into super-symmetry of nature.

Ellen Bialystok

Ellen Bialystok, Distinguished Research Professor in the Department of Psychology, Faculty of Health, has received a Tier 1 Walter Gordon 91亚色 Research Chair in Lifespan Cognitive Development. Her research examines the effects of experience on cognitive function and brain organization across the lifespan, with a particular focus on bilingualism as an example of an intense and prevalent experience. The award will support studies of patients with early Alzheimer鈥檚 disease to provide a more complete description of these dynamic changes and develop a training protocol based on compensation that will improve cognitive function for all patients.

Chun Peng

Chun Peng, professor in the Department of Biology, Faculty of Science, was awarded a Tier 1 91亚色 Research Chair in Women's Reproductive Health. Peng鈥檚 long-term goal for her research program is to understand the regulation of female reproduction and the mechanisms underlying the development of ovarian cancer and preeclampsia. Her proposed research will enhance the overall understanding of female reproductive health and reveal novel biomarkers for preeclampsia and therapeutic targets for ovarian cancer.

Stepan Wood

Stepan Wood, professor at Osgoode Hall Law School, has been awarded a Tier 1 Chair in Environmental Justice and Sustainability. His research program explores transnational sustainability governance schemes across many issue areas from a transdisciplinary perspective. His research program seeks to harness these interactions to empower marginalized interests and advance sustainability.

Tier 2 Chairs

Jimmy Huang

Jimmy Huang, professor and director of the School of Information Technology, Faculty of Liberal Arts & Professional Studies (LA&PS), received a Tier 2 91亚色 Research Chair in Big Data Analytics. Huang鈥檚 research focuses on the areas of information retrieval, big data and their applications to the web and medical healthcare. The objective of his research program is to overcome limitations of existing information retrieval methods and to formally develop a new retrieval paradigm called context-sensitive and task-aware information search for big data.

Amro Zayed

Amro Zayed, assistant professor in the Department of Biology, Faculty of Science, was awarded a Tier 2 91亚色 Research Chair in Genomics. Zayed鈥檚 research group sequences the genomes of thousands of bees to identify mutations that influence their economically and ecologically relevant traits. Zayed鈥檚 program aims to improve the health of Canadian honey bees, which will increase the sustainability and security of Canada鈥檚 food supply.

More about the 91亚色 Research Chair program

The 91亚色 Research Chairs program serves as an internal twin for the Canada Research Chairs (CRC) program. The level of support and recognition provided to 91亚色 Research Chairs is aligned with supports and recognition provided through the CRC program.

91亚色 Research Chairs are available at two levels analogous to CRC chairs. Tier I 91亚色 Research Chairs are open to established research leaders at the rank of Full Professor. Tier II 91亚色 Research Chairs are aimed at emerging research leaders within 15 years of their first academic appointment at the rank of Associate or Assistant Professor. Both have five-year terms that are renewable in the context of open-competition based on peer review and the continuing availability of resources.

Researchers and students were recognized for achievements that ranged from being appointed a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada to being the lead for a Partnership Grant award by the Social Sciences & Humanities Research Council of Canada to being appointed a Canada Research Chair to being the lead on a large scale research grant from the Natural Sciences & Engineering Research Council of Canada and more. This year鈥檚 Research Leaders event was dedicated in memory of Lassonde School of Engineering Professor Nick Cercone, who was posthumously recognized for his research achievements.

鈥淓very year for the past four years we have gathered at this event to recognize research excellence and success across the University 鈥� and each year it becomes clearer that 91亚色 researchers are taking their place among the world鈥檚 leading scholars and experts,鈥� said Shoukri. 鈥淭he work of our scholars actively enriches the atmosphere of learning at 91亚色, and is at the heart of our efforts to train the next generation of thought leaders.鈥�

Shoukri introduced the keynote speaker, Pat Horgan, Vice-President Manufacturing, Development & Operations at IBM Canada.聽 Horgan spoke about the tremendous impact of 91亚色 research and the importance of industry-academic collaborations in the broader community, highlighting 91亚色鈥檚 research partnerships with IBM Canada.

Dean and Associate Vice-President Graduate in the Faculty of Graduate Studies Barbara Crow followed Davidson and highlighted graduate student research at 91亚色. 聽Her remarks were presented in front of a slideshow of various students鈥� achievements.

Shoukri presented Distinguished Research Professor Bridget Stutchbury, Faculty of Science, with the 2016 President鈥檚 Research Excellence Award and Professor Rebecca Pillai Riddell, Faculty of Health, and 91亚色 Research Chair in Pain and Mental Health, with the 2016 President鈥檚 Emerging Research Leadership Award.

Stutchbury was honoured with the 2016 President鈥檚 Research Excellence Award for her significant contributions to outstanding research on the ecology, behaviour and conservation of birds.

Pillai Riddell was recognized with the 2016 President鈥檚 Emerging Research Leadership Award for establishing the first norms for the development of acute pain behaviours in healthy infants, within the context of primary caregivers through her (the Opportunities to Understand Childhood Hurt [OUCH]) Lab at 91亚色.

Join Robert Hach茅, vice-president research & innovation, as he conducts a series of workshops with University community members to probe values and perceptions聽regarding research at 91亚色.聽 The feedback and discussion arising from these workshops will be used to inform the Strategic Research Plan: 2013 鈥� 2018.聽 All 91亚色 students, staff and faculty are invited to participate.

During the workshops, participants will be asked to share their hopes and concerns with respect to the new Strategic Research Plan, highlight what they feel are the current and future core research values for 91亚色 as an institution, provide their feedback on areas of research excellence and identify future areas for continuous improvement.聽 Participants will have an opportunity to share their thoughts in small groups and each group will present their feedback to the larger audience.
