91亚色鈥檚 largest fundraising campaign came to a successful conclusion聽yesterday with a wrap event at Glendon Manor.

91亚色 to the Power of 50, which launched publicly in 2006, raised $207 million, exceeding its $200-million goal. Students, donors and other campaign supporters joined representatives from 91亚色 and the 91亚色 Foundation for a celebratory f锚te to mark the occasion. Featured performers included Latin jazz artist Amanda Martinez (IMBA 鈥99) and Ron Westray, 91亚色鈥檚 Oscar Peterson Chair in Jazz Performance.

"I would like to thank all of our generous donors who supported the 91亚色 to the Power of 50 campaign," said 91亚色 President聽& Vice-Chancellor Mamdouh Shoukri. "This highly successful fundraising effort will continue to support our presence as a leading Canadian university for interdisciplinary research and teaching."

Among the campaign's highlights were campaign鈥檚 success is聽due to the more than 30,000 donors who contributed to it. Over the course of the campaign, 44 gifts of $1 million or greater were received. Research-related successes include:

  • More than 640 new student scholarships, awards and bursaries were established through the leadership and generous support of Chancellor Emeritus Avie Bennett and many other supporters.聽University and government matching programs augmented the impact of many of the gifts.
  • The Sherman Health Sciences Research Centre, made possible by a $5-million gift from philanthropists Barry and Honey Sherman. Scheduled to open in September 2010,聽the centre聽will house 91亚色鈥檚 and laboratory space for kinesiology and psychology researchers, as well as a functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) machine.
  • New chairs and professorships, including the , named for the first black female member of Parliament. The chair will study issues affecting schooling in today鈥檚 urban environments to improve teaching methods and student outcomes.

Campaign co-chairs Tim Price and Bill Hatanaka (BA Comb. Hons. 鈥77) are impressed with the campaign鈥檚 success and believe it is the stepping stone to realizing 91亚色鈥檚 potential.

鈥淭his campaign has energized the entire 91亚色 community,鈥 says Hatanaka. 鈥淎s 91亚色 continues to expand its groundbreaking programs and research, the momentum we鈥檝e built will only grow, and the impact聽the University and its graduates make will resonate even louder.鈥

鈥91亚色 to the Power of 50 has strengthened our relationships with the community,鈥 adds Price. 鈥91亚色, and the entire region, can gaze back with pride and look forward with anticipation at what鈥檚 to come.鈥

While the main component of the campaign was major giving, the 91亚色 Foundation acquired pledges of $12 million for planned gifts, such as bequest intentions in wills, and garnered support from more than 2,400 91亚色 faculty, staff and retirees through the Family Campaign, led by Professor Ron Pearlman, University Professor Emeritus Ross Rudolph and the late Nancy Accinelli, co-president of the 91亚色 Retirees Association.

A group of accomplished alumni, the 50 to the Power of 50 Group, served as ambassadors to help raise the campaign鈥檚 profile. Chaired by Ivan Fecan (BA 鈥01), president & CEO of聽CTVglobemedia and CEO of CTV Inc., the group included such notables as actress (BFA Spec. Hons. 鈥01), defence attorney Clayton Ruby (BA 鈥63) and broadcaster (BA 鈥95).

鈥淭he generosity of our donors, the wise counsel of our co-chairs and volunteer leadership, and the 91亚色 community have ensured an outstanding future for 91亚色,鈥 says 91亚色 Foundation President & CEO Paul Marcus. 鈥淲e are deeply appreciative of, and humbled by, their overwhelming support.鈥

91亚色鈥檚 Steacie Science & Engineering Library will today celebrate the launch of PubMed Central (PMC) Canada,聽a new Canadian partner in an international network providing free or open access to health research.

Faculty and graduate students are invited to find out how 91亚色 Libraries can help make their research available to the world through . Join the science librarians at Steacie Science & Engineering Library at聽4:30pm and listen to guest speakers, including Lesley Beagrie, associate dean of professional & international programs in the Faculty of Health; Gordon Flett, associate dean of research & graduate education聽in the Faculty聽of聽Health; and biology University Professor Ron Pearlman of the Faculty of Science & Engineering. Pearlman has worked extensively with the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) in encouraging faculty to support open access (OA) publishing.

On April 28, the National Research Council鈥檚 Canada Institute for Scientific & Technical Information in partnership with the CIHR and the US National Library of Medicine, launched PubMed Central (PMC) Canada.聽PMC Canada enables CIHR-funded researchers to deposit their peer-reviewed articles for global exposure online along with content from PMC US and UK PubMed Central.

Benefits of PMC Canada:

  • It has higher citation numbers than traditional journals.
  • International exposure will put 91亚色 research on the global map.
  • 91亚色 researchers already have over 300 entries in PubMed.
  • Health researchers worldwide will be able to access CIHR-funded research.
  • Links to the free full-text publication will speed up the grant review process.

The Problem: Tackling the World鈥檚 Health Issues

While much funding has been dedicated to basic and applied (clinical) research, there has not been a process to ensure that the findings are made available to policy-makers and practitioners so that people and institutions can benefit from the research. Emerging trends require that research agendas not only involve the creation of knowledge, but also a plan to facilitate the use of that knowledge, otherwise known as .

A Solution: Open Access

The emphasis on knowledge translation has driven the groundswell of interest in OA publishing in recent years. The scholarly community and CIHR believe that greater access to research publications and data will promote the ability of researchers in Canada and abroad to use and build on previous knowledge to address today鈥檚 health challenges. Only when research findings are widely available can evidence be translated into policies, technologies, health-related standards and practices, and new avenues of research.

91亚色 Libraries initiated in 2005. Librarians offer and and meet with researchers to encourage them to make their research available through , 91亚色's repository of research.

Increasing 91亚色鈥檚 Research Impact

CIHR, along with a growing number of granting agencies, has adopted an requiring that the results of all CIHR-funded projects are made freely accessible online as of Jan. 1, 2008. Grantees may set up an account to facilitate access to their research publications through PMC Canada. 91亚色 researchers already have over 300 entries in PubMed, and soon all CIHR-supported researchers will be involved in the endeavour. Some publishers already deposit in PMC Canada.
