Over the course of the event, participants will be聽exploring聽shared synergies, knowledge and advancements in聽areas such as聽space exploration,聽nanosatellite technology,聽space robotics and disease modelling research. They will also be examining how to collaborate on a new project known as the聽Early Warning and Advance Response Network聽(e-WARN). Spearheaded by Kozinski, e-WARN聽is intended to detect, quantify and initiate an effective response to chemical and biological聽threats聽released in public buildings. Researchers from both countries will discuss and plan how to collaborate on the e-WARN project.

Attending the workshop from India聽are representatives from the聽DRDO, Society for Applied Microwave Electronics Engineering and Research (SAMEER), the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras, the University of Calcutta and the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). Also attending are聽researchers from 91亚色, the University of Saskatchewan, McGill University, Concordia University and Ryerson University, and representatives from the Canadian Space Agency, COM DEV International, Unique Broadband Systems, Microstat Systems Canada, Canadian Light Source, MDA Technologies, Xiphos Technologies and the Canada-India Business Council.

Dozens of students from area high schools joined the participants on April 14 to celebrate the Youth research interns and youth-led committee leaders, who worked on the project in 2010.

The ACT for Youth Project, which began in 2009 and is funded through 2014, brings together an alliance of stakeholders and interdisciplinary researchers from 91亚色 in a program of applied research, capacity building, knowledge transfer and evaluation that is focused on youth in urban communities.

The project hopes to develop a comprehensive youth strategy that articulates how places like the Jane-Finch community can energize local assets that support positive youth development.

One of the goals of the project is to build the research capacity of youth in the Jane/Finch area so they can participate in asking and answering questions about issues of importance to their community.聽 The project created its Youth Research Internship to facilitate this goal.聽 ACT also has a youth-led committee to ensure that youth have a space to contribute to their research.

Youth-led committee co-chairs Antonius Clarke, executive director of the youth-led community agency Friends in Trouble, and 91亚色 grad Alex Lovell [BA Spec. Hons. 鈥02, MA 鈥06], now a doctoral student at Queen鈥檚 University, introduced each award recipient and outlined their research contributions, volunteer activities and future study plans.

Teens in military families are often burdened by additional emotional stress when a parent is deployed to Afghanistan, according to a new Canadian study, wrote :

Researchers from the University of New Brunswick, the University of Alberta, Ryerson University, and 91亚色 released the findings of their groundbreaking research on Thursday that examined students at Oromocto High School near Canadian Forces Base Gagetown, who recently had a parent serving in the Canadian mission in Afghanistan.

The researchers reported the teens worried their parents would not return home or would come back "different."

The study found that stress caused concerns at home. The young people felt a sense of responsibility for the emotional stability of their other parent and for any younger siblings at home. The teen felt additional stress if the parent remaining in Canada was having difficulty with the other parent being away on the military mission.

. . .

The teens reported feelings of isolation in attempting to deal with those problems, according to the study.

In particular, adolescent girls took on a large share of the family's emotional burden when one parent was overseas.

. . .

[The] study was funded by the .It is a part of a larger study into the mental health and well-being of adolescents in military families.

The studywas covered by , the , the , and among other news outlets.

The changing nature of work in the global economy, modern labour movements, challenges faced by workers and their organizations, as well as forms of collective action undertaken to resist neo-liberalism 鈥 all of this will be explored at an upcoming conference, New Voices in Labour Studies 2010: Emerging Perspectives on Workers and Workplaces.

The conference will take place Friday, Oct. 15 and Saturday, Oct. 16, from 8:30am to 5:30pm in the 91亚色 Research Tower, Keele campus. It is presented by 91亚色鈥檚 Work & Labour Studies Program, the 91亚色 Centre for Research on Work & Society, Ryerson University and the Labour College of Canada.

This interdisciplinary, two-day conference will include research on contemporary issues, papers that place these subjects in historical perspective, and thematic panels and workshops on teaching and researching in the field of labour studies.

This is the fourth year for the conference 鈥 the first聽in Toronto 鈥 where junior scholars in the field present their work and meet other emerging voices in labour studies, as well as interact with more senior scholars who serve as commentators on the panels.

鈥淭his conference showcases the labour studies community鈥檚 continuing vibrancy and impressive national reach,鈥 says Professor Stephanie Ross, coordinator of 91亚色鈥檚 Work & Labour Studies Program. 鈥淎cross Canada, labour studies attract researchers who combine rigorous cutting edge scholarship with a capacity to speak to the real and pressing challenges we face in our working lives. Anyone with an interest in how to make work and the economy more socially just will take a lot from this conference.鈥

The conference is sponsored at 91亚色 by the Office of the Dean in the聽Faculty of聽Liberal Arts & Professional Studies, the Graduate Program in Social & Political Thought, and the Department of Geography, and at Ryerson by the Department of History, the Dean鈥檚 Office in the Faculty of Arts, the Office of the Vice-President of Research & Innovation, and the Centre for Labour-Management Relations. In addition, the Canadian Labour Congress鈥檚 Labour College of Canada has also provided much-appreciated support.
