Winfried Siemerlingis University Research Chair and Professor of English at the University of Waterloo, Canada, and
Associate of the W.E.B. Du Bois Institute at Harvard University. He won the Gabrielle Roy Prize for The Black Atlantic
Reconsidered: Black Canadian Writing, Cultural History, and the Presence of the Past (2015; www.blackatlantic.ca;
French translation forthcoming 2022). Earlier books include Canada and Its Americas: Transnational Navigations (coedited), and The New North American Studies: Culture, Writing, and the Politics of Re/Cognition (Routledge 2005,
French translation 2010), He has contributed chapters to The Oxford Handbook of the African American Slave Narrative
(2014). The Cambridge History of Postcolonial Literature (2012), and African American Literature in Transition 1750-
2015 (Cambridge UP, 2021). He was elected to the Royal Society of Canada in 2019.

Collette Murray

Collette Murray is a multi-award-winning artist-scholar, dance educator, cultural arts programmer and arts consultant. Murray pursues a Ph.D. in Dance Studies at 91��ɫ focusing on dance education and anti-racist dance pedagogies. Murray’s publications, advocacy and arts research centre around cultural arts education, decolonization in the arts and education sectors, and in amplifying African diasporic dance practices. Murray is Chair of the Board of Directors for the Dance Umbrella of Ontario and serves as a National Board member of the Canadian Dance Assembly. Murray presents at national and international conferences, and is the Artistic Director of Coco Collective offering culturally responsive projects that connect participants to African and Caribbean arts and operates her mobile dance education business (www.misscocomurray.com).

I am a digital historian and cultural producer whose work focuses on public scholarship, memory, Global Africa, historical slavery, and art education. I have been developing multimedia educational projects in the Global South, Digital Public History initiatives such as the Project Baquaqua. I am currently directing the UNESCO project Fragments of Memory: Artistic Representations of Diaspora Lives. I coordinated British Library Endangered Archives Projects, developed digital archives and websites (e.g. Equiano’s World), and several training workshops in Digital Humanities. My work as UNESCO consultant in Africa-Brazilian history (FUNDAJ) resulted in museum and art exhibits. I am a documentary filmmaker working on art and experimental and creative performances in Brazil, Uganda, South Africa, Nigeria, Canada and Egypt. I have extensive experience as a lecturer in Brazil and Canada, with several teaching awards and grants for the development of educational projects, community engagement and public history activities.
