She is a research associate with the YRC II in Black Sonic Cultures. Nia earned her MA in Human Geography from University of Toronto. Her SSHRC CGS-M funded thesis focused on the experiences of Black women with anti-black surveillance practices, especially in the wake of Toronto鈥檚 Anti-Violence Intervention Strategy. Her current research explores the implications of counterinsurgent surveillance policies on Toronto鈥檚 Caribana and London鈥檚 Notting Hill Carnival, with a focus on Black youth.

Rose Ukeci Uwodha /research/tubman/profile/rose-ukeci-uwodha/ Wed, 04 Feb 2026 20:12:08 +0000 /research/tubman/?post_type=profile&p=9254 Rose Ukeci is a doctoral student in sociology and anthropology at the University of Mons in Belgium. Her research focuses on the forms of control, appropriation, and contestation surrounding natural resources, as well as the knowledge and practices that govern their use in the DRC. With a background in geography, she has expertise in cartography and geographic information systems (GIS). Her current research focuses in particular on Ituri and Haut-Uele, where she analyzes extractive dynamics, the ontologies of gold, struggles and discourses in the mines, as well as interethnic conflicts and/or conflicts with Uganda.
