Tamil migrations have moved across multiple continents in the present, and maintained an interconnectivity often borne through shared linguistic, cultural, economic and political links. These crossings begin from the earliest recorded movements through to colonial and economic migrations, indentured labor, and include forced displacements due to conflict. A critical study of transnational Tamil identity must therefore engage with the issues of which persons and which practices possess the abilities to move/cross and why, while recognizing the diverse and plural identities that may inhabit Tamilness. The 3rd Annual Tamil Studies Symposium seeks to examine the ways in which transnational Tamil identities have been documented historically and politically and performed culturally and artistically; and to explore the benefits and pitfalls of transnationalism in the face of the contradictions and limitations of nation states. The Symposium is to be held at 91��ɫ, on the traditional territories of the Mississaugas of the New Credit First Nations, the Haudenosaunee, and the Metis Nation of Ontario on the 26th and 27th of May 2017.

Submission topics for academic papers may include, but are not limited to:

• Colonial and postcolonial labor migrations
• Transnationalism, Law and Human Rights concerns
• Transgenerational narratives; youth activism and community formation
• Return, Circulation and Limbo
• Indigeneity, Blackness and other Marginalized Histories
• Material Culture; Object Histories; Archival practices (public and private documentations)
• The Mobility/Immobility of Caste and Religious Practices
• Health, well-being, medicine and circumscriptions of dis/ability; health and well-being post-settlement (including mental health, intimate partner violence, elder abuse, poor integration etc)
• Feminisms, Queerness, Gender Norms/Roles and Challenges and Counter-Strategies
• Cultural transmission and heritage preservation in diaspora ��������������
• Economic agreements, circulation and shifting state boundaries
• Transnational literatures (migration and acculturation from Cankam period onward); Literature in translation
• New Media and forms of Tamil Identities

Submissions are welcome in the form of academic papers, works of art, music, film and live performance. Abstracts must not exceed 250 words, or five minutes (if submitted in the form of a film or music clip). Submissions must be accompanied by a short bio (150 words) and emailed to tamilstudiesyork@gmail.com. The [updated] deadline for submissions is **10 February 2017**. The Symposium is committed to functioning within an anti-oppressive framework, and with an critical awareness of our implications in settler-colonial practices. We welcome papers/performances that draw on solidarities with indigenous and other racialized/marginalized communities and posit meaningful historical and political parallels with transnational Tamil experiences.

கண்டங்களையும் நாடுகளையும் ��எல்லைகளையும் கடந்து வாழ்வது தமிழ் மக்களின் நிகழ்காலம். இத்தகைய வாழ்விலும் மொழி,��பண்பாடு,��பொருளாதாரம்,��அரசியல், உணர்வு ஆகிய பொதுமையான கூறுகளின் வழி அவர்கள் பெரிதும் தொடர்புடையவர்களாகவே இருக்கின்றனர். தமிழ் மக்களின் புலப் பெயர்வுகள் நீண்ட வரலாறு கொண்டவை. சங்க காலம் தொடங்கி,��காலனித்துவம்,��கூலித் தொழில் (indentured labour)��அடிப்படை, பொருளாதாரத் தேவை, வணிக நோக்கு, விடுதலைப் போராட்டத்தால் உருவான வலிந்த இடப்பெயர்வு, போன்ற பலவற்றை இவை�� உள்ளடக்குகின்றன. அதனால் நாடுகடந்த / எல்லை கடந்த தமிழ் அடையாளங்களைக் ��குறித்த திறனாய்வுப் பார்வை எமக்கு அவசியமானது.

எவ்வகைப்பட்ட நடைமுறைகள்�� இடமாற்றத்துக்கான அல்லது புலம் பெயர்வு/புலப்பெயர்ப்புச் சாத்தியங்களை உடையன? போன்ற கேள்விகள் எமக்கு முக்கியமானவை.��எமது மூன்றாவது தமிழியல் கருத்தரங்கு,��நாடு கடந்த தமிழ் அடையாளங்கள் வரலாறு சார்ந்தும் அரசியல் சார்ந்தும் எவ்வாறு�� பதிவு செய்யப்பட்டுப் பண்பாட்டு ரீதியாகவும் கலாசாரரீதியாகவும் எவ்வாறு ஆய்வு செய்யப்படுகின்றன, ஆற்றுகை செய்யப்படுகின்றன என்பதனை மையப்படுத்துகிறது.��கூடவே, ����நாடு/ அரசுகளின் முரண்பாடுகளையும் கட்டுப்பாடுகளையும் எதிர்கொள்ளும் நாடு கடந்த /எல்லை கடந்த நிலையின் நன்மைகளையும் தீமைகளையும் ஆய்வு செய்ய முனைகிறது. இக்கருத்தரங்கு ஒன்ராறியோவின் ஆதிகுடிகளின் நிலத்தில், யோர்க் பல்கலைக்கழகத்தில்��2017��ஆம் ஆண்டு மே மாதம்��26-27��திகதிகளில் நடைபெற உள்ளது.

ஆய்வுகள் கீழ்வரும் தலைப்புகளை மையமாகக் கொண்டு அமைக்கப்படலாம்:

• காலனித்துவ, பின் காலனித்துவ கூலிமுறைப் புலப்பெயர்வு
• நாடுகடந்த தமிழ்ச் சூழலில்��சட்டம், மனித உரிமைகள்
• தலைமுறை கடந்த எடுத்துரைப்புகள்,��இளைஞர் செயற்பாடுகள், சமூக உருவாக்கம்,
• மக்களின்��பிறப்பிட-வதிவிட சுற்றோட்டம், அந்தர நிலை (Circulation and Limbo)
• ஆதிகுடியினம்,��கறுப்பினம்,��ஏனைய விளிம்பு நிலையினர் வரலாறுகள்
• பொருள் சார்ந்த பண்பாடு (material culture),��பருப்பொருள் வரலாறு (object history),ஆவணப்படுத்துதல் (தனிமனிதப் பதிவுகளும் பொது ஆவணங்களும் இதில் உள்ளடக்கம்)
• சாதி சமய நடைமுறைகளின் இடம்பெயரும்/பெயராத் திறன்
• உடல் நலம்,��நல்வாழ்வு,��மருத்துவம்,��வலுவிழப்பு சார்ந்த வரையறைகள்,��குடியேற்றத்துக்குப் பின்னான உடல் நலம்,��நல்வாழ்வு,��மனநலம்,��நெருங்கிய வாழ்க்கைத் துணைவர் விளைவிக்கும் வன்முறை,��மூதாளர் மீதான துஷ்பிரயோகம்,��குறைபாடுடைய ஒருங்கிணைப்பு.
• பெண்ணியம்,��பாலினம் சார்/சாரா அடையாளங்கள் (queer),��பாலின நெறிகள்/பொறுப்புகள்,சவால்கள்,��மறு உத்திகள் (counter strategies)
• புலம்பெயர் நாட்டில் பண்பாட்டுக் கடத்துகையும் (transmission)��மரபு பேணலும்
• பொருளாதார ஒப்பந்தங்களும் ��மாறி வரும் அரசு/நாட்டு எல்லைகளும்(circulation and shifting state boundaries)
• மொழிபெயர்ப்பு இலக்கியங்கள்,��நாடு கடந்த இலக்கியங்கள் (சங்க காலம் முதல் இடம்பெற்ற புலப்பெயர்வுகளும் பண்பாட்டு ஏற்பும்)
• தமிழ் அடையாளத்தின் புதிய ஊடகங்களும் உருவும்
