I am a doctoral candidate in Sociology. My doctoral research uses South Asian diasporic stand-up comedy in Toronto as an entry point to explore the politics of South Asian representation in contemporary Canada. It uses performative humour as an analytical category of diasporic cultural expression to probe into questions of race, gender, identity politics and representation. I use ethnography as a methodological approach to ask how the politics of humour can be effectively used to analyze diasporic (non)belonging. I situate my research at the intersection of critical humour studies
and diaspora theory. At a time when anti-South Asian discourses are increasingly gaining traction, my research inquires into the implication of this genre of performative art for civil repair of the South Asian community in Toronto.

I am an active member of the Canadian Sociological Association and I have also started a specialized research cluster on South Asia at the Canadian Sociological Association. It fosters intellectual dialogue between scholars who focus on South Asia in their work and is open to anyone.
