Topic: Five Things I鈥檇 Tell My 2018 Self: Reflections on Building a Career in Health Emergency Management
Speaker: Moira Hennebury, Manager of Emergency Preparedness at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre
Abstract: When Moira Hennebury completed 91亚色's Master of Disaster and Emergency Management program in December 2018, she was just beginning to envision what a career in emergency management could look like. Since then, she has progressed from intern to analyst, specialist, and manager, supporting dozens of emergency responses and leading high-impact preparedness initiatives across Ontario's health sector. Today, Moira leads the Emergency Preparedness team at Sunnybrook, a nationally leading and globally recognized academic health sciences centre, and home to Canada's first and largest trauma centre. Most recently, she provided leadership for health and medical planning in support of Toronto's hosting of the FIFA World Cup 2026鈩. Drawing on lessons learned throughout her career journey, Moira will share five insights she wishes she had known when starting out in the profession. The session will explore how emergency management theory translates into practice, the skills and experiences that matter most in an increasingly complex and evolving field, and the realities of building a meaningful career. Through these reflections, Moira will offer lessons for emerging professionals while highlighting what has sustained her passion for healthcare emergency management over the past eight years.

Topic: Resilience capacities: Comparing complementary development programs in South Sudan
Speaker: Martin Bunch, Professor in Faculty of Environment & Urban Change at 91亚色
Abstract: This presentation explores the relationship between development interventions and resilience capacities in South Sudan, using evidence from the Fortifying Equality and Economic Diversification for Resilience (FEED II) and Asset Creation and Livelihoods (ACL) projects. The analysis compares resilience capacities associated with household participation in each project, when projects operate independently and when their activities overlap. Drawing on community and disaster resilience concepts embedded in the theories of change of FEED II and ACL, we analyze survey data capturing absorptive, adaptive, transformative, and community-engaged resilience capacities. Here we present the quantitative part of a mixed methods approach, in which principal component analysis and multiple regression models are used to assess associations with project participation. The results indicate that households participating in overlapping projects exhibit stronger configurations of resilience capacities than households participating in single projects, providing evidence relevant to decisions about closer coordination where interventions are co-located, and identifying resilience potential programming interventions.
