On Saturday March 29th, four undergraduate students from the Department of Chemistry presented their capstone research projects at the 53^rd annual Southwestern Ontario Undergraduate Chemistry Conference hosted by the University of Guelph.

The following four students gave excellent talks based on their CHEM/BCHM4000 research:

We are excited to announce that Samantha Galea and Grazia Macri won awards for their presentations in the Organic Chemistry and Inorganic Chemistry divisions, respectively. Thanks also to the faculty members who came out in support. Their presence made this a memorable occasion for our students.

91��ɫU Chemistry and Biochemistry students receive top honours

On February 11^th, the Faculty of Science hosted their annual Awards & Honours night to celebrate the achievements of students and faculty members in 2024. It was wonderful to see more than 50 students from the Department of Chemistry recognized for their academic and research success including both undergraduate and graduate students winning departmental, faculty, university and national awards. Congratulations to our many undergraduate and graduate students on their success and to the faculty members who were celebrated for their contributions to teaching and research. Undergraduate Chemistry and Biochemistry students showcase their research at provincial conference

Undergraduate students from this year’s CHEM4000 and BCHM4000 Research Project Course travelled to Western University on Saturday April 6^th to deliver presentations about their senior thesis projects at the 52^nd Southwestern Ontario Undergraduate Chemistry Conference. The research talks from 91��ɫU Chemistry and Biochemistry undergraduate students Juan Valencia (Wilson Lab), Arman Parham (VandenBoer Lab), Kristina Gremi (Hili Lab), Samin Tavokoli (Johnson Lab), Hannah Le (Baumgartner Lab) and Manisha Kumari (van Wijngaarden Lab) covered a broad range of modern topics in chemistry and biochemistry. With 150 undergraduate presentations from 15 different universities, we are excited to announce that Manisha received first place in the Physical, Theoretical and Computational Chemistry division and Hannah earned second place in the Materials Chemistry division. Congratulations to all our undergraduate students on their research projects and to their research mentors who have supported them all year.

The department of Chemistry extends congratulations to Alex Akhundov for being selected as an ACS Division of Organic Chemistry Outstanding, Senior Organic Chemistry Student recommended by Professor Christine Le.

This recognition is awarded based on formal coursework and research accomplishments done during the student's undergraduate studies and recognises the student's desire to purse a career in Organic Chemistry.

Japanese Lectureship Award for Thomas Baumgartner

Prof. Thomas Baumgartner, currently a visiting professor at the Research Center for Materials Science at Nagoya University in Japan, was awarded the 54^th IOCF Lectureship by the International Organic Chemistry Foundation to give three lectures at Kyoto University and Osaka University. The lectureship was created “to provide opportunities for researchers and students inside or outside the host university in Japan to learn about cutting-edge technologies taught in lectures on topics in organic chemistry given by invited foreign researchers”.

Teaching & Learning Funding for Kyle Belozerov in Chemistry

Congratulations to Kyle Belozerov who has been awarded a YUFA Teaching & Learning Development Grant for his project entitled “Virtual Reality-Based Structure Visualization In The Classroom: A Pilot Project.” The grant will allow him to develop classroom activities that involve visualizing biological macromolecules in virtual reality and to begin testing this exciting new technology in undergraduate biochemistry courses.
