Objective

The IDEaS program is designed to improve the Government of Canada’s National Defence Department with access to the creative potential of Canadian innovators. It supports knowledge and concepts to enhance defence capability, create economic impact, and ultimately build an innovation ecosystem for national defence.

IDEaS is calling on Canadian innovators to tackle three pressing operational challenges:


  • The Department of National Defence (DND) and the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) are seeking innovative software-based solutions to seamlessly convert, analyze, and fuse real-time, domain-specific, content-rich data transmitted over radio frequency (RF) bearers into a secure, standardized pan-domain Command and Control (C2) format to enhance interoperability and enable timely, data-driven decision-making across all domains and levels of command.

  • The DND and CAF are seeking innovative solutions to develop modular, stand-alone wind-powered electric generation system that can be easily transported, deployed, and maintained in remote northern locations to provide reliable, clean energy under extreme cold, high-wind, and icing conditions.

  • The DND and the CAF are seeking novel, integrated technologies that enable the CAF to operate Relocatable Transportable Camps (RTCs) independently and sustainably in Arctic and sub-Arctic environments while meeting all applicable Canadian environmental and health regulations.

Objective

The overall objective is to offer early-career researchers the opportunity to develop and lead high-risk, high-reward interdisciplinary research, expand their professional networks and receive focused leadership training in their pivotal first years as independent investigators.
This program is intended to develop highly talented junior faculty into influential leaders who explore boundary-pushing new directions in interdisciplinary research. It has three core pillars:

  1. Fostering Novel Interdisciplinary Research – Enabling scholars to collaborate as equals within a select international network of leading researchers, jointly addressing globally significant research challenges through interdisciplinary work.
  2. Developing and Broadening Networks – To expands scholars’ horizons and potential for impact by broadening and deepening their networks with like-minded researchers in collaboration, support and mentorship.
  3. Strengthening Leadership Skills – To provides training in focused areas of research leadership.

Research interests are expected to complement the themes and goals of a CIFAR research program. The programs accepting applications are: 


Eligibility

To be eligible for this program, you must:  

  • Hold a PhD (or equivalent)
  • Be employed in a full-time position at an institution of higher education or research, with responsibilities that include leading independent research as a principal investigator, as well as supervising or teaching graduate-level trainees toward the completion of a degree. This position must be secure throughout the full term from April 1, 2027 to March 31, 2029.
  • You must have started your first such position (post-PhD) no earlier than July 1, 2022 and no later than December 31, 2026. In countries or institutions where the tenure-track system applies, applicants are expected to hold a full-time tenure-track position. Special consideration may be given to those who have taken parental leave or have exceptional circumstances.

Objective

This challenge is seeking innovative solutions to strengthen medical care in resource-constrained operational environments through two challenge streams:

Forward oxygen delivery:To develop portable, high-performance oxygen systems for forward deployment

    Challenge– Current oxygen delivery methods depend on heavy, finite pressurized cylinders and pose logistical and safety risks such as fire and explosion. Existing portable solutions, such as oxygen concentrators, are rugged and deployable but are unable to achieve sufficient flow rates to deliver high fractional inspired oxygen (FiO2) during provision of prolonged field care.

    Desired outcome

    Applicants should target:

    1. Systems that are portable (e.g. fit in a rucksack) and do not require pressurized O2 cylinders.
    2. Systems that can be adjusted to provide variable FiO2 in accordance with casualties’ needs (both ventilated and spontaneously breathing) and,
    3. Systems that can achieve and sustain FiO2>0.8 for >4 hours. A credible pathway to achieving these levels under operational conditions should also be demonstrated.

    Sustainable surgical capability: To enable surgical teams to sustain surgical operations with minimal reliance on external resupply.

    Challenge – Forward surgical teams face limited availability of surgical supplies and consumables. Existing methods for sustaining these supplies often require high SWaP systems, infrastructure, or centralized logistics. Highly portable alternatives frequently lack sufficient throughput, reliability, or clinical suitability for sustained operations.

    Desired outcome

    Proposed solutions should demonstrate credible performance in terms of throughput, reliability, and clinical suitability, with clear justification of how they support sustained surgical operations in austere environments.

    Objective

    To leverage the complementary interests and research expertise of Canadian and Korean academic researchers to support bilateral research projects in quantum science and technologies

    Each proposal may address any challenge in quantum science, but its objective must aim to advance research in any of the following quantum technologies:

    • quantum algorithms/encryption, including post-quantum cryptography
    • quantum communications
    • quantum computing
    • quantum materials
    • quantum sensing

    Proposals may also couple any of these quantum technology thrusts to other research topics in the natural sciences and engineering.

    • You may participate as the NSERC principal applicant (i.e., the Canadian project lead in the Korean application) on only one application; however, you may participate as a co-applicant or collaborator on multiple applications.     Objective

    To promote systematic research cooperation through joint research and qualification programs, as well as cooperative, cross-border supervision of doctoral researchers from both partner groups and longer-term, coordinated and reciprocal research visits by doctoral researchers at the respective partner institutions.


    Eligibility
    • IRTGs can only be established by universities and research institutions entitled to confer doctoral degrees.
    • An IRTG is run by two teams of participating researchers from a single institution in Germany and Canada, respectively, with complementaryexpertise.
    • Each team should have approximately five to ten members with proven expertise both in the IRTG’s main research topic and in providing outstanding supervision to doctoral researchers.
    • Previous research collaboration between the two groups should ideally have been documented by joint publications.

    Proposals for German-Canadian IRTGs intended for DFG-SSHRC funding are open to all subject areas covered by SSHRC, particularly in social sciences and humanities that are not primarily focused on health or health service delivery. Interdisciplinarity in IRTGs is encouraged.


    Program Requirements
    • Doctoral researchers should spend a period of at least six months (and up to one year) in total during their PhD project at the respective partner institution for research and training
    • Each doctoral researcher should have both a German and a Canadian supervisor
    • On the German side, approximately thirty doctoral researchers can be funded over the course of the IRTG. The partner site in Canada should support a group of doctoral researchers of approximately 14–20 in total.

    How to Apply

    German-Canadian IRTG applications must be prepared jointly before being submitted by the German host university to the DFG; they are not submitted to SSHRC.

    The two-stage assessment process consists of a draft proposal stage followed by a full proposal stage for those invited to proceed.

    • Stream 1: Detection and Reconnaissance: rapidly detect, identify, classify, and characterize mines, obstacles, and optimal breach opportunities to support operational planning and decision-making.

    Outcomes

    The outcome of this Challenge is deliberately structured to elicit solutions that engage the broader operational problem set, integrating detection, reduction, and maneuver-enabling capabilities.

    DND/CAF is open to innovative solutions that address one or more of the following desirable outcomes:

    • Demonstrate improved speed and overall effectiveness compared to current reconnaissance and minefield breaching approaches.
    • Minimize reliance on costly armoured fighting vehicles (AFVs).
    • Provide an operationally appropriate balance between solution cost, mission effectiveness, and expected rates of attrition and replacement during operations.
    • Significantly enhance:
      • mine-clearing and obstacle-breaching capabilities;
      • the speed and scale of mine-clearing operations;
      • the effectiveness of mine-clearing operations.
    • Substantially enhance:
      • minefield and obstacle boundary detection and delineation
      • physical object detection, identification, and classification
      • path planning, route selection, or breach lane design
    • Reduce risk to personnel by increasing physical or operational distance between soldiers and explosive hazards.
    • Integrate effectively with broader military command, control, and information systems.
    • Enable rapid deployment and/or modular employment to respond to hastily employed or evolving enemy obstacle systems.
    • Provide dual-use or transitional capability applicable to post‑conflict humanitarian demining.
    • Provide means to verify or confirm the successful creation and viability of a breach lane.

    Objective

    To translate Canadian regenerative medicine research discoveries from the innovation and developmental stages through to pre-clinical evaluation and into clinical trials and commercial applications


    Eligibility

    Four regenerative medicine research programs are available that focus on innovation, translation toward the clinic, and policy and societal impact:

    1. Accelerating Clinical Translation Awards – to support multidisciplinary research that is moving toward the clinic within five years; or is addressing a key research question associated with an ongoing clinical trial.
    2. Early Career Researcher Jump Start Awards – for early career researchers who are within the first five years of an initial academic appointment, to develop a research program with a regenerative medicine focus.
    3. Impact Awards – to support proof-of-principle experiments, including novel therapeutic or technical approach development that will drive regenerative medicine therapies forward.
    4. Impact Awards ELSI & HE Stream – to support the knowledge generation and/or translation of regenerative medicine research for targeted stakeholders and/or users.

    Projects must include non-federal partnerships that provide on-kind and cash contributions, including where appropriate private-sector partners, clinical, manufacturing, or trial delivery partners.

    Note: Applications must comply with the federal government’s  (STRAC Policy) and the  (NSGRP). Refer to  for details.

    SCN has also collaborated with the following two organizations to offer joint funding award opportunities:

    Objective

    To accelerate discovery and support early-stage researchers who are leveraging AI in novel, innovative and impactful ways.


    Eligibility

    To be eligible, you must:

    • be
    • be applying to theDiscovery Grants programin the current competition
    • have held an independent academic position for 10 years or less as of December 1 of the year in which you apply

    An independent academic position is one that:

    • is a university faculty appointment (tenured or non-tenured)
    • requires you to engage in research that is not under the direction of another individual
    • authorizes you to supervise or co-supervise research conducted by students registered in an undergraduate or graduate degree program, or by postdoctoral fellows

    To apply in November 2026, you need to have started your appointment on or after December 1, 2016. However, your 10-year eligibility window is adjusted if you have had an eligible delay in research. See guidelines for more information on types of delays.

    You are ineligible to receive a Geoffrey Hinton Prize if you have received an .

    Applications of AI must be within the natural sciences and engineering.


    How to Apply

    You must submit your Discovery Grant and Geoffrey Hinton Prize applications separately, but the two application processes are linked.

    To be considered for a Geoffrey Hinton Prize, you must first submit your full Discovery Grant application through the Research Portal (see for instructions and application deadline).

    Application Limit

    Alliance International Collaboration is reopening with a competitive model with three application deadlines per year.You are limited to one application within a 12-month period(starting on the date the first application is submitted) as either applicant or co-applicant.

    Objective

    To provide funding to eligible Canadian university researchers to collaborate with international university researchers on innovative natural sciences and engineering (NSE) research projects in areas of global importance. Funding is awarded to projects of high scientific merit that bring together complementary expertise and demonstrate clear benefits to Canada.

    Researchers may apply to support any R&D project that seeks to respond to a research challenge in the natural sciences and engineering (see ). These collaborations will:

    • strengthen research excellence and leadership in Canada and abroad
    • contribute to Canada’s long-term competitiveness
    • generate new knowledge and/or technology to address complex challenges by combining complementary expertise
    • provide students and postdoctoral trainees with an exceptional international research environment and training in areas that are important to Canada and collaborating international countries
    • draw on diverse perspectives and skill sets to accelerate the translation and application of research results

    Note: Applicants are encouraged to collaborate with academic researchers in fields other than the NSE.


    Eligibility
    • Eligible Canadian university researchers may apply individually or with other eligible Canadian academic co‑applicants. Applicants and co-applicants must hold an active NSERC peer‑reviewed grant as the primary applicant at the time of application.
    • Alliance International Collaboration grants support collaborative projectsonlybetween Canadian university researchers and international researchers at accredited universities holding a faculty position—equivalent to assistant, associate, or full professor— as their primary place of employment at a recognized university. The participation of non‑academic collaborators or partner organizations from any sector (private, public, or not‑for‑profit) is not permitted. This applies to the application submitted to NSERC and the international application.
