Objective

To recognize impactful housing research being conducted in Canada and provide funding for research teams to promote and expand their work.

Award recipients will be chosen based on the best applications that demonstrate research excellence and innovation and provide evidence of impact in areas of research and knowledge translation gaps related to the priority areas of actions for the National Housing Strategy (NHS).

The following three awards are offered:

Gold Roof Award for Knowledge to ActionÌý– recognizes initiatives that close the gap between what is known from excellent research and what is done with that knowledge in the housing sector. Its aim is to acknowledge innovative initiatives that have made outstanding contributions to housing and that are leading the way in best practice applications.

CMHC President’s Medal for Outstanding Housing ResearchÌý– recognizes a significant research contribution that has not only increased knowledge or understanding in one of the National Housing Strategy’s priority areas but that has also addressed a priority action area identified by CMHC’s President and Chief Executive Officer. The theme isÌýModernizing Canada’s Housing Industry. The research outcomes must have led to demonstrable impacts within the academic community or the housing sector.

Objective

This funding opportunity aims to:

• Foster the sharing of data, expertise, and resources across Canada to drive innovation and collaboration, with a focus on leveraging AI to support cross-site data submission, harmonization, discovery, and sharing of multi-modal data.
• Develop a pan-Canadian framework that enables the collection, stewardship, management, and sharing of cancer data across distributed repositories and platforms, with the aim to promote reproducibility, rigour, and reuse of research outputs, while reducing duplication and operational inefficiencies across the ecosystem, in alignment with other national efforts, including the Canadian Research Data Platform.
• Support interdisciplinary team science by enabling secure and ethical sharing of data, expertise, and biosample resources among researchers across disciplines and jurisdictions, which is responsive to domain-specific needs of the cancer community.
• Strengthen national research capacity in integrating inclusive, intersectional, and innovative skillsets, technologies, and methods in data science, analytics, and AI into their research.
• Foster knowledge mobilization around implementation of best practices on responsible data management and sharing approaches that support open science, trusted reuse, and long-term public value from research investments.

These objectives are to be supported by the following key design elements:

• Strong community-led governance: The National Cancer Data and Bio-Resource Coordinating Hub must establish a robust, transparent, and accountable governance structure that supports coordination across stakeholders and jurisdictions, ensuring that all of the above objectives are met.
• Alignment with international and national standards: The Hub’s activities should be aligned with  (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable) principles.  (GA4GH) tools and standards should be utilized to enable collaborations nationally, and with international genomic efforts on data sharing, analysis, and knowledge exchange.
• Federated integration of multi-modal data: The Hub must support the incorporation and linkage of diverse multi-modal data types, including but not limited to multi-omic (e.g., genomics, epigenomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, metabolomics, microbiomics), wearable, imaging, clinical, and histology data.
• Pan-Canadian scope and interoperability: The Hub must operate with a national perspective that will enable discovery, access, and analysis of health data across the country, governed in a transparent, accountable, and consistent way.

Applicants must demonstrate that they have an existing, operational data platform, repository, or digital infrastructure that will serve as the foundation on which the proposed cancer-specific National Data Space will be developed. The funding opportunity is intended to support the extension, integration, and scaling of existing assets, and not the creation of entirely new standalone platforms.

• Improve natural resources systems monitoring, environmental resilience and regulatory efficiency.
• Support development of accessible and usable genomic data resources, including a national hub, that can support natural resources research and decision-making across Canada.
• Optimize the re-use of data through adherence to FAIR (findable, accessible, interoperable and reusable) principles and support coordination across genomics, natural resources and biodiversity data initiatives.
• Support development and integration of AI-enabled analytical tools across datasets to enhance discovery, forecasting and real-time decision-making capabilities.
• Support development of Indigenous-led governance frameworks that operationalize distinctions-based Indigenous data governance principles, including the First Nations principles of Ownership, Control, Access, and Possession (OCAP®); the Métis principles of Ownership, Control, Access, and Stewardship (OCAS); the National Inuit Strategy on Research and Inuit-specific approaches to data governance grounded in Inuit self-determination; the CARE Principles for Indigenous Data Governance (Collective Benefit, Authority to Control, Responsibility, and Ethics); and the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP).
• Improve alignment with international initiatives in genomics, natural resources and biodiversity.
• Create a sustainable community of practice around natural resources genomics, governance and data coordination.

Funding streams - The initiative portfolio is comprised of three integrated activity streams:

STREAM 1 – DRIVER PROJECTS: stand-alone, mission-driven, impact-focused research investments designed to address challenges faced in Canada’s natural resources systems, such as improving biodiversity monitoring, enhancing regulatory efficiency, developing sustainable resource management strategies, strengthening climate adaptation, and protecting critical ecosystems.

STREAM 2 – NATIONAL GENOMICS DATA HUB: The initiative will establish a national genomics data hub in natural resources that provides standards and infrastructure needed for long-term impact. The hub will serve as a coordinating platform to support and steward data generated by the Stream 1 driver projects, enabling the development and use of a common, findable and usable national genomic data resource focused on genetic diversity across Canada’s natural resources systems.

STREAM 3 – INDIGENOUS DATA GOVERNANCE FRAMEWORKS: The natural resources initiative will facilitate the development of Indigenous-led, distinctions-based governance frameworks, co-developed with relevant rights holders. These frameworks will develop concrete tools and resources by which Indigenous genomic and environmental data, knowledge and assets are owned, accessed, utilized, shared and ultimately stewarded within, and where appropriate, beyond the initiative.

Eligibility

• Research involving Indigenous lands, waters, species, or ecosystems must be supported and led by the relevant Indigenous governing authority. Indigenous communities retain full control over the collection, storage, access, sharing, withdrawal, and future use of their data.
• Indigenous-governed data must be stored locally until the relevant authorities approve a governance and data-sharing model. Other data and metadata must be submitted to the national genomics data hub and stored on secure Canadian infrastructure.
• Projects must comply with all applicable privacy, access, and data-protection laws.
• Driver projects must:
  • Include partners who support the practical use and impact of the research.
  • Assign someone to manage the project and its data.
  • Conduct large-scale genomic sequencing and data generation.
  • Use samples collected within Canada. Previously collected samples may be used when the required metadata are available.
  • Include GE3LS research to address the social, ethical, environmental, legal, and policy implications of the research.
  • Generate the required minimum metadata for all datasets.
  • Follow international genomic data and metadata standards where possible.
• Metadata requirements do not constitute consent to access or share Indigenous-governed data.

How to Apply

Genome Canada GAPPs are institutional awards and require the support of researchers’ respective Departments, Faculties, Organized Research Units, and the Office of the Vice President Research and Innovation. All researchers planning to submit an LOI are required to submit an ORS Checklist.

• To provide early-stage support for bold, exploratory research that tests novel hypotheses and opens new conceptual or experimental directions in the study of autism and related neurodevelopmental disorders (NDD).
• To encourage ideas, approaches and perspectives that may differ substantially from those previously supported in the field or by SFARI.

Proposed research may draw on any scientific discipline, methodology or experimental system (including humans) and may operate at any scale or level of analysis. • To spur the development of proof-of-concept ideas to better diagnose and treat GBM and/or lead to new lines of future investigation.
• To provide a unique opportunity for researchers to follow up on serendipitous findings that they would not otherwise have the resources to probe.
• To facilitate the adaptation and repurposing of existing methods and technologies from other health fields and research disciplines with the potential to change the status quo in cancer prevention, detection and treatment.

• To seek projects that move beyond describing health systems challenges to generate new evidence, test innovative approaches, and identify practical solutions that can improve patient access to innovative medicines and strengthen health system performance.
• To move beyond problem identification to develop, test, implement, and evaluate practical solutions that generate actionable evidence and can be integrated into routine health system delivery and scaled across jurisdictions, populations, or care settings where appropriate. The ultimate aim is to improve health system performance, implementation effectiveness, patient outcomes, and long-term health and economic value for Canadians.

This competition is organized around the HRF’s two complementary Applied Research Pillars:

• Pillar 1: Health System Factors Affecting Real-World Use and Outcomes
• Pillar 2: Improving the Coherence and Performance of Review and Reimbursement Processes

Applicants must align with one of the pillars and, for Pillar 1 applications must address the priority research area of Improving the Patient Journey Through Care Pathways, Referral, and Coordination and demonstrate how the project generates practical, implementation-relevant, and decision-relevant insights.

Greater consideration will be given to projects that:

• Integrate research with implementation and operational improvement
• Generate novel and actionable insights into barriers affecting patient access to innovative medicines
• Develop, implement, and/or evaluate scalable, real-world solutions
• Improve care coordination, referral processes, and patient pathways
• Lead to measurable improvements in patient outcomes, system performance, equity, and/or efficiency
• Demonstrate clear value, including financial, operational, or economic value to key health system stakeholders such as health system managers, hospitals, provider organizations, and governments

Projects focused solely on discovery research, basic science, technology development without a clear implementation pathway, or problem description without evaluation of potential solutions are not within scope.

Priority will be given to projects focused on oncology, cardiovascular/renal/metabolic conditions, respiratory and immunology (chronic inflammatory disease), neurodegenerative and rare diseases, and mental health.

Tier 1 - Smaller Time-Limited projects: These projects should focus on clearly defined questions, testing assumptions and/or feasibility, or incubating larger initiatives.

Tier 2 Larger Applied Projects: These projects typically involve multiple sites, jurisdictions, or complex system questions requiring deeper engagement.

• Enhance resilience to wildfire risk (for example, environmental, structural, health and community) at the local, regional and national scale

Eligibility

• Canadian university researchers in the natural sciences, engineering, social sciences, humanities and health disciplines, working with academic collaborators from the UK, and optionally from the US.

To provide flexible support to early-and-mid-career researchers pursuing ambitious, rigorous, and practically relevant research that advances understanding of how children thrive across diverse contexts. The Fellowship seeks researchers with strong potential, a clear vision for the next phase of their work, and a commitment to generating evidence that can inform action to improve outcomes for children.

Applications are encouraged from researchers representing a broad range of disciplines, methodological approaches, and geographic contexts. Relevant fields include, but are not limited to, education, psychology, child development, public health, economics, sociology, neuroscience, data science, humanitarian studies, disability studies, human-computer interaction, and implementation science.

The Foundation welcomes research proposals that advance understanding of children’s thriving through one of the following three themes:

• The youngest children in crisis and conflict setting
• Inclusion and wellbeing of neurodivergent children
• Children’s learning and development in an AI-enabled world

Objective

This Open Call for Research Proposals will use BioCanRx’s established translational research pipeline approach to fund projects aiming to advance promising cancer immunotherapies and enabling technologies as well as support the adoption of these types of therapies into the Canadian healthcare system for both pediatric and adult cancers. Please see a summary of the four open funding programs below.

Proposals should aim to address at least one of the following objectives:

1. Accelerate Cancer Immunotherapy Innovations from Bench to Bedside: Develop and translate promising innovations from proof-of-concept through to clinical trial (i.e. Phase I/II clinical trials).
2. Address the Clinical, Social, Economic, Legal, Ethical, Regulatory and Policy Elements of these Innovations: Identify and address the facilitators and barriers to the adoption and integration of these therapies within the evolving regulatory and policy healthcare landscape across Canada.
3. Support Technology Innovation through Core Facility Activities: Canadian academic infrastructure and technologies that support the advancement and production of cancer immunotherapies and enabling technologies.

Enabling Studies Program  

• BioCanRx will fund up to 50% of total eligible project costs. The remaining 50% must be provided as matching funds from eligible partners. 
• Prepare and position novel cancer immunotherapies and enabling technologies for clinical testing in patients, including GMP manufacturing and process development. Enabling Studies projects should result in either a complete Health Canada CTA submission packages or Quality (Chemistry and Manufacturing) packages.  

Clinical Trials Program  

• BioCanRx will fund up to 40% of total eligible project costs. The remaining 60% must be provided as matching funds from eligible partners. 
• Investigator-led Phase I/II clinical trials of novel cancer immunotherapies that have been substantially developed in Canada.   

Clinical, Social and Economic Impact (CSEI) Program  

• Identify and address the facilitators and barriers to the adoption and integration of these therapies into Canadian clinical practice and healthcare systems.  

Core Facilities Program  

• Supports manufacturing or translational research services that support the advancement and production of cancer immunotherapies. 

Note: Linked Applications Favoured - CSEI applications may be submitted as standalone projects; however, applications that are linked with Enabling or Clinical Trials proposals currently funded or applying to this competition will be assessed more favourably.

Objective

Projects for this grant must meet one of the program objectives:

1. Promoting volunteering among seniors and other generationsÌý-ÌýYour project will encourage seniors to volunteer and get involved in their community. By volunteering, seniors can connect with others and feel included and valued. Volunteering should complement, not replace, paid employment.
2. Engaging seniors in the community through the mentoring of others -ÌýYour project will foster social inclusion by connecting individuals through mentoring of shared experiences. It helps seniors stay involved in their communities and share their life and work experience by mentoring others.
3. Expanding awareness of elder abuse, including financial abuseÌý- Your project will raise awareness among seniors in the community about potential abuse.
4. Supporting the social participation and inclusion of seniorsÌý- Your project will create opportunities for social participation targeted toward seniors.
5. Providing capital assistance for new and existing community projects and/or programs for seniorsÌý- Your project will help to remove barriers to participate and enable seniors to be more engaged in their communities. Capital assistance projects must primarily help seniors to improve their social inclusion. If your proposed project is requesting capital assistance, it must meet 2 program objectives (objective 5 – Capital Assistance and one other objective).

Note: Seniors must lead or play aÌýÌýin the project’s planning and/or delivery.

Eligibility

• Not-for-profit organizations
• Coalitions, networks and ad hoc committees
• Municipal governments
• Research organizations or institutes
• Educational institutions (in other words, universities, colleges, CEGEPs, school boards/school districts) *
• Public health and social services institutions
• Indigenous organizations, including:
  • band councils
  • tribal councils
  • self-government entities

*Provincially/territorially funded institutions are eligible with the agreement of the provincial/territorial government.

Projects

Your project must meet all of the following criteria:

• be no longer than 52 weeks
• request no more than $50,000
• meet 1Ìý*
• seniors will lead or play aÌýÌýin its planning and/or delivery
• seek to benefit seniors and their communities
• demonstrate cost effectiveness ()

* Note: If your proposed project is requesting capital assistance, it must meet 2 program objectives:

• objective 5: capital assistance
• any other objective

Capital assistance projects may use up to $25,000 of the total approved funding, for eligible capital expenses.

91ÑÇÉ« researchers are reminded that all applications for external research funding, including Letters of Intent, must be reviewed and approved by the Office of Research Services before they are submitted to the granting agency.  For internal approval, the application must be accompanied by a completed ORS Checklist, which requires the Dean’s signature.  Please send the complete application, with the finalized budget and a completed  to sciapps@yorku.ca, five days prior to agency deadline.
