What does equity look like for everyone? The upcoming Inclusion Day: Building Allies for Equity conference, hosted by 91亚色鈥檚 Centre for Human Rights (CHR), will tackle the meaning of equity next Wednesday.

The conference will take place on Inclusion Day, Jan. 18, from 11:30am to 8pm, at 280N 91亚色 Lanes, Keele campus. Everyone is welcome to attend the free event.

This is the third annual Inclusion Day at 91亚色. Guest speakers will provide participants with internal and external community perspectives 鈥渢hat will no doubt enhance our path of continued learning听about the wealth that diversity brings,鈥 says No毛l Badiou, director of 91亚色鈥檚 CHR.

鈥淚nclusion Day provides an occasion to highlight the diversity on our campus and the value and importance of ensuring that each and every member of our greater community, students, staff and faculty, is included in 91亚色's activities, whether in the classroom, during extracurricular events, or academic and administrative meetings,鈥 says Badiou.

This year's theme of "building allies for equity" is in keeping with CHR's goal of further enhancing the individual understanding of barriers faced by certain members of the 91亚色 community with a view to exploring ways that we can help eliminate these barriers, he says.

鈥淭he key in creating a more equitable community is to further each of our individual understanding of the incredibly rich diversity of our community and be empowered with knowledge about how to value this diversity by being more inclusive, as well as appreciative and respectful of our differences. It is a tall order, but one that can be accomplished by having a growing number of partners and supporters within our community.鈥

Director of the City of Toronto鈥檚 Equity & Inclusion Office, Uzma Shakir will deliver the opening keynote address at noon, along with a panel comprised of 91亚色 students. A host of talks will follow throughout the afternoon.

The first sessions will include 91亚色 PhD psychology candidate Kaley Roosen (BSC Spec. Hons. 鈥07, MA 鈥09) and Access 91亚色 discussing disability awareness: The Power of Language, and Professor Faisal Bhabha and second-year law student Adrienne Lipsey of Osgoode Hall Law School looking at the meaning of religious accommodation. The Aboriginal Student Association at 91亚色 will host a workshop exploring notions of identity for Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal youth and the impact of gender roles and access to cultural resources in urban Aboriginal communities. 91亚色 student Sana Siddiqui, an MSW student, will explore the historical and political roots of Islamophobia and its current manifestations through a variety of hands-on activities, video clips, case studies and interactive discussion. She will also offer strategies for building networks of allies against Islamophobia.

During the second round of sessions at 2:30pm, Jennifer Dalton (LLM 鈥06, PhD 鈥10), a visiting scholar with 91亚色鈥檚 Centre for Refugee Studies, will present 鈥淔rom Kelowna to Attawapiskat: Forging Aboriginal-Canada Alliances to Build Aboriginal Equity鈥. She will discuss the continuing inequities that plague Aboriginal communities across the country despite the Kelowna Accord, which sought to bridge the inequity gap. This interactive workshop will emphasize the need to forge positive alliances between Aboriginal communities and the government. Bobby Siu from 91亚色鈥檚 Equity Studies Department will address 鈥淏uilding Allies for Equity in the Workplace: Some Considerations for Persons with Disabilities鈥.

A third group of sessions will begin at 4pm, covering topics that look at the purpose of 鈥渧oice鈥 if no one is listening and relationships for creating change and inclusion. Ragini Sharma, a doctoral student in the Faculty of Education, will hold an interactive workshop Broadening the Vision, Deepening the Roots, from 4 to 5:15pm, where participants can talk about their experiences of religious diversity on campus and will be challenged to broaden their vision beyond an identity based solely on religion.

An evening reception with keynote speaker Tim McCaskell, a social justice advocate and author, will follow the final sessions.

91亚色 Professor Haideh Moghissi has been awarded the prestigious Trudeau Fellowship prize from the Pierre Elliott Trudeau Foundation.

鈥淲e were thrilled to learn that Professor Haideh Moghissi听was a recipient of the Trudeau Fellowship prize,鈥 said 91亚色 President & Vice-Chancellor Mamdouh Shoukri. 鈥淭he Trudeau Fellowship is an incredible honour bestowed upon the finest thinkers who have demonstrated outstanding research achievements, creativity and social commitment in all disciplines of the humanities and social sciences. We are proud that one of our own is a member of this esteemed group.鈥

After a prolific career in Iran as an archivist, Moghissi became an internationally acclaimed analyst of women鈥檚 issues in the Muslim world. The Fellowship prize recognizes her work in this area.

鈥淓ven though I have had the good fortune of receiving several large research grants in the last decade or so, the Trudeau Fellowship has special significance as it reflects a recognition of my academic and community-related research in the areas that are also the focus of the Trudeau Foundation, including human rights and dignity, and responsible citizenship,鈥 said Moghissi.

Moghissi, a professor in the Department of Equity Studies and the School of Women's Studies,听Faculty of Liberal Arts & Professional Studies, was one of announced Monday at a ceremony at 91亚色, including听91亚色 alumnus Ronald Rudin (MA 鈥73, PhD 鈥77) of Concordia University.

鈥淢y academic work has always had a specific audience and specific purpose in mind, hoping to contribute, in the most modest way, to change in areas that need change, be it in my country of birth, Iran, or in Canada, the country that I now call home,鈥 she said. 鈥淭he fellowship will help me to continue my work, providing more opportunity to explore the complexities and nuances of such issues as multiculturalism, minority rights and belonging, under the present, rapidly changing political and social circumstance.鈥

Each prize is worth $225,000. Trudeau Fellowships are awarded to individuals who set themselves apart through research achievements, creativity and commitment to critical social issues of importance to Canada.

鈥淭he fellowship will provide more opportunity for organizing and attending academic gatherings to learn from and exchange ideas with others who work in these and similar areas, to provide support to a few more graduate students as future scholars,鈥 Moghissi said.

Tricky math and haunting messages accumulate in unresolved poetics this fall at the Art Gallery of 91亚色 (AGYU).听

The AGYU invites you to "surge out there" as it joins with Raqs Media Collective: technological poets for an India in transition, to present their newest exhibit 听Surjection.

Of the current generation of Indian artists, the from New Delhi (Jeebesh Bagchi, Monica Narula, Shuddhabrata Sengupta) are among the best known and most widely exposed in the west 鈥 and certainly the most media conscious. Having started as documentary filmmakers, over the past听20 years they have evolved a sophisticated, and sometimes performative, practice that combines film, media, audio and text, all of which draw upon philosophy and political theory, in installations of an unresolved poetics.

The Raqs Media Collective exhibition, Surjection, opens with a free public reception tonight, from 6 to 9pm at the Art Gallery of 91亚色. The听artists will be at the reception.

The collective describes their听AGYU exhibition this way:听鈥淩aqs Media Collective delights in transposing the plenitude of the incalculable onto the fabric of the ordinary. By counting to infinity, sensing animation in stillness and speaking in the language of silence, Raqs will breathe numbers, figures, proverbs and stories into the galleries of the Art Gallery of 91亚色.鈥

In this exhibition of entirely new work, the artists start with traces that are minimal but that contain great amplitude within them, such as the palm print of Raj Konai 鈥 the ancestral trace (from 1859) of the entire history of forensic identification 鈥 that hovers over the exhibition. Now animated, this image of a counting hand initiates a series of moves that the viewer animates through the exhibition. At the same time, the viewer witnesses other evolutions in video projection where stillness itself slowly is animated. Surjection begins outside, in AGYU Vitrines and occupies both galleries.

The elements of the exhibition are in a surjective relationship to each other. 鈥淪urjection鈥 is a mathematical concept devised by the Bourbaki Group, whereby the elements of one set are applied, transposed, or mapped onto those of another set. Surjection continues until Sunday, Dec. 4.听听

Surject yourself onto the Performance Bus

It鈥檚 an entirely different experience of numbers and letters on the Bingo Dilemma Bus. The game starts tonight at 6pm sharp when听the Performance Bus departs the Ontario College of Art & Design University campus at听100 McCaul St.. Riders听gather the clues to the game on the way to the Raqs Media Collective exhibition opening at the听AGYU. Artist and game host听Oliver Husain will be on the bus calling out the game clues. Performance Bus returns downtown at 9pm.

Math too tough for you? Go back to school with听AGYU @ Art Toronto

The AGYU tricks or treats fair patrons with one of its specially commissioned installations featuring Toronto novelist Derek McCormack and Toronto artist Ian Phillips. The haunted schoolhouse is the outcome of an听 four-year project supported by the AGYU of H.A.M.S. (Holiday Arts Mail-Order School), which is a correspondence course (for the 1936-1937 school year) devoted to the holiday arts. Hallowe鈥檈nologists will be on hand to take your questions and offer demonstrations. Alumni are welcome.听听

Virtually AGYU

The surjective relations continue online with the听 as independent Toronto curator Su-Ying Lee visits the studio of New 91亚色-based artist Alexandre Singh, whom she met in Paris this past summer while travelling in Europe. on her travels through Europe.听听

Writing from the ash-filled Grimsv枚tn sky, Toronto artist counts down the rest of her days in Iceland as she听writes about听contemporary art and generous helpings of never-ending splendour, mind-blowing sunsets, migratory birds, half-shorn sheep, geothermal pools and more.听
