A new global consensus statement on the role of higher education in advancing sustainable development was launched during the second Global Higher Education Symposium at United Nations Headquarters in New 91亚色 on 13 July 2026.

The initiative was developed and advanced by the UNESCO Chair at 91亚色, which helped bring together leading international partners and guide a global consultation process. The final statement reflects a shared commitment to strengthen the contribution of higher education to societal transformation, the Sustainable Development Goals, and the post-2030 agenda. It provides a common foundation for continued collaboration, policy dialogue, and action across institutions, networks, and regions.

Special thanks to the Canadian Commission for UNESCO for the financial support, which enabled UNESCO Co-Chair Katrin Kohl to travel to New 91亚色.

The聽UNESCO Chair in Reorienting Education towards Sustainability at 91亚色聽participated in the international workshop聽Higher Education at the Heart of the 2030 Agenda, held on 21鈥�22 April 2026 in Sidi Dhrif, Tunisia. Hosted by International Association of Universities (IAU) in collaboration with Tunesian higher education institutions, namely University of Carthage, the University of Sousse, and the University of La Manouba, the workshop reached higher education representatives from 20 countries. Bringing together higher education leaders, researchers, and policy actors, the conversation explored the role of higher education in advancing the SDGs and strengthening institutional engagement with sustainable development. The discussions underscored the importance of collaboration, policy coherence, and whole-institution approaches as universities shape pathways for sustainable futures beyond 2030.

The UNESCO Chair in Reorienting Education towards Sustainability at 91亚色 is pleased to share that聽Charles Hopkins聽has been invested as a Member of the聽Order of Canada. The investiture took place聽in Ottawa on March 19, 2026.

This national recognition acknowledges Charles鈥� longstanding leadership and global contributions to advancing Education for Sustainable Development. Over several decades, his work has helped shape international policy processes, supported institutional transformation, and strengthened collaboration across regions and sectors. As inaugural Chairholder of the UNESCO Chair at 91亚色, his work continues to connect research, policy, and practice, contributing to more integrated and context-responsive approaches to sustainability in education.
