Five 91ÑÇÉ« athletes have scored big time – so big that they are going to be inducted into the 91ÑÇÉ«ÌýUniversity Sport Hall of Fame.
The fiveÌýformer varsity athletes will be inducted at a dinner and ceremony on Thursday, May 29, at the Montecassino Banquet Hall in Woodbridge. Tickets are $75 per person or $600 per table, and are available at the Sport 91ÑÇÉ« Office, 302 Tait McKenzie Centre, ext. 55183.
These are the award-winning athletes:
Al Avery was an outstanding offensive weapon, scoring a total of 53 goals and adding 113 assists in regular season play during four seasons as a centre with the Yeomen hockey team form 1972 to 1976. An Ontario University Athletics Association All-Star in 1973-74, Avery still holds the 91ÑÇÉ« single-season record for points per game (2.93), a record that has stood for 28 years.
John Christensen was a member of the Yeomen basketball team from 1980 to 1985. During that time, 91ÑÇÉ« dominated the OUAA, winning four championships and advancing to two CIAU Championships.ÌýHe is 91ÑÇÉ«'s career leader in rebounds (577) andÌýfield goal percentage (57.5).
Neil Harvey helped establish 91ÑÇÉ«'s swimming team as a national contender in the late 1970s. 91ÑÇÉ«'s national ranking improved fromÌý19th toÌý5th following Harvey's first year as he won two CIAU gold medals. In 1977-78 he was named 91ÑÇÉ«'s Male Athlete of the Year after capturing four gold medals at the OUAA Championship.
Donna (Kastelic) Hoag played four seasons (1980-82, 83-85) with the Yeowomen volleyball team. During her career, 91ÑÇÉ« captured three OWIAA gold medals and three CIAU bronze medals.ÌýIn addition, sheÌýwas a three-time OWIAA All-Star and a three-time CIAU All-Canadian.
Sandra Levy, 91ÑÇÉ«'s Female Athlete of the Year in 1992-93, had an outstanding career with both the field and indoor hockey teams. As a member of the Yeowomen field hockey team, Levy was a five-time OWIAA All-Star, a four-time CIAU All-Canadian,Ìýa tournament all-star four times at the CIAU Championship andÌýa four-time OWIAA All-StarÌýwith 91ÑÇÉ«'s indoor hockey team.
Created in 1980, the Sport Hall of Fame honours individuals who have significantly contributed to 91ÑÇÉ«'s interuniversity sport program as athletes, coaches and administrators; and who have exemplified the spirit and ideals of 91ÑÇÉ« sports in their professional and community life.
