Football Lions kick off new season

The 91ÑÇÉ« Lions football team opened the 2004-2005 interuniversity sport season on Labour Day with a 32-14 loss to the University of Guelph Gryphons.


Guelph’s Chris Hladich broke Monday’s football game opener with a 56-yard interception return for a touchdown early in the fourth quarter to lead the hometown Gryphons to a 32-14 win over the Lions. 91ÑÇÉ« quarterback Bart Zemanek completed 21 of 38 attempts for 247 yards, one touchdown and four interceptions. His favourite target was Ricardo Hudson, who recorded nine catches for 106 yards.

91ÑÇÉ« will host the Ottawa Gee Gees (1-0) on Saturday at 2pm.

The Lions men’s and women’s soccer teams will open the 2004 OUA regular season on the road against Laurentian and Nipissing this weekend. New Master Soccer Coach Paul James, who was hired last winter, along with his assistant Dino Lopez, will guide both programs. 91ÑÇɫ’s men’s team finished third in the North Division in 2003 with a record of 3-5-2, while the women finished first in the North Division with a record of 6-4-0.


Sport 91ÑÇɫ’s 13 women’s teams and 11 men’s teams will compete provincially in Ontario University Athletics (OUA) and nationally in Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) over the next six months. Last year, five 91ÑÇÉ« teams captured OUA medals and four advanced to the CIS National Championship.
