National search begins for new Lions football coach

A national search for a new head coach for the 91راة« Lions football team has begun.

91راة« Sport & Recreation announced this week that Mike McLean, the former head coach, has been relieved of his duties.

"This decision was not made lightly,” 91راة« athletic director Jennifer Myers said.  “Following a thorough review, we determined that a change in leadership would be in the best interest of the football program, after it became apparent we had philosophical differences. 91راة« thanks Mike for his contribution to 91راة« Lions football, and we wish him the best in his future.

"I have great expectations for the 91راة« Lions football program," Myers said.  "Sport and Recreation is committed to building a solid foundation for a nationally competitive program, because of the value football brings to the University as a whole.  I look forward to the hiring of a new head coach who will lead this football program into the future."

91راة« President & Vice-Chancellor Mamdouh Shoukri added, “The University strongly supports the 91راة« Lions football program as it enters this rebuilding phase, and I am confident that a new approach will be developed around a solid student-athlete model. Interuniversity sport plays a huge role in the overall student experience, and I look forward to witnessing this upcoming chapter of 91راة« Lions Football.”

The 91راة« Lions begin their 2010 football season on the road on Sept. 6, against the Guelph Gryphons.  The home opener is scheduled for Sept. 11 at 91راة« Stadium, when the Lions will play host to the Ottawa Gee-Gees.
