The 91ÑÇÉ« Lions men’s soccer team proved to be too much for the Wilfrid  Laurier University Golden Hawks on Sunday, Sept. 19 in a 2-0 win at 91ÑÇÉ« Stadium.
The Lions showed an impressive level of dominance over their rivals. Just two minutes into the game, fifth-year defenceman and tam captain Jamaal Smith rang one in past Laurier goalkeeper Jarrett Humprhey.

Following the early goal, the Golden Hawks pressed the ball forward with the pass in an attempt to even the score. The team earned multiple chances, including a shot that ripped off the upper post by a Laurier striker.  at the 91ÑÇÉ« Lions website.
In their other game of the weekend, the Lions were defeated 2-1 by the University of Waterloo Warriors on the road on Saturday afternoon.
The Warriors played very aggressive against the Lions. Midfielder Adam Craig and forward Sohyb Basir both notched goals in the win. However, Craig’s aggression would be noticed by the referees and was ejected from the game after receiving a red card.
Rookie defenseman Daniel Fabrizi scored his first career goal, but it wasn’t enough as 91ÑÇÉ« picked up the loss. .
Women’s soccer Lions earn first win of 2010
The 91ÑÇÉ« Lions men’s and women’s soccer teams completed their three game road trip against the Waterloo Warriors on Saturday, Sept. 18. A great outing for the women’s team saw them capture their first win of the season in a hard-fought 1-0 game.
After rookie forward Sonia Sampogna posted the game’s only goal, 91ÑÇɫ’s defence took control of the match.
91ÑÇÉ« goal keeper Sarah Fiorini played a great game and with the help of her defensive players, she was rewarded with a shutout, the ninth of her university career. .
They also played a game against the Laurier Golden Hawks in their home opener, falling 2-1 to their rivals.
The Lions got off to a solid start. By aggressively pushing the ball through the neutral zone, they were awarded an early goal off a floating lob shot by fourth-year star Nicole Markowitz. .
Comeback falls short as Varsity Blues edge football Lions
The 91ÑÇÉ« Lions football team mounted a comeback in the fourth quarter but ultimately fell short in a 24-19 defeat to the University of Toronto Varsity Blues in the 41st annual Red & Blue Bowl at Varsity Centre on Saturday, Sept. 18.

The Varsity Blues held a 21-3 lead at the end of the third quarter and appeared to be cruising to the finish line, but the Lions outscored the Blues 16-3 in the final frame to make the game interesting. They had a chance on their final drive but an interception by Lions quarterback Nick Coutu ended the drive and the game.
Despite the setback at the end of the contest, Coutu had a career game with 320 passing yards (31 of 49). His one touchdown was a beauty; a 41-yard bomb downfield to Alex Bugdahn, who stretched across the goal line for the score with less than two minutes remaining.
He spread the ball around to seven different receivers in the contest, with five recording at least two catches. Jonelle Tolbert led the way with 13 catches for a game-high 146 yards. .
Rugby Lions fall to Gaels
The 91ÑÇÉ« Lions women’s rugby team suffered another tough loss in their second game of the season Saturday afternoon, losing to the Queen’s University Gaels 65-13.
The Lions clawed and scratched for every point they put on the board, but they came up short against a very tough opponent. The Gaels (2-0) have been dominant this season, outscoring their opponents 89-13.
First-year, eight-man Fedelia Omoghan scored five points on a try, and first-year fullback Zoe Smith scored eight points on one conversion and two penalty kicks to give the Lions their 13 total points of offence. .
