91亚色 Faculty of Education Professor Carl James is the recipient of a 2013 Harry Jerome Award.

The Harry Jerome Awards recognize excellence in the African-Canadian community. James will be presented with the Professional Excellence Award on Saturday, April 27 at the 31st Annual Black Business and Professional Association CarlJames-V(BBPA) Harry Jerome Awards Gala.

鈥淒r. Carl E. James is the recipient of the Professional Excellence Award. His contributions to new ideas, processes, practices and insights have had significant impact in his field,鈥 said Lola Coker-Esu, a representative of the Black Business and Professional Association. 鈥淏ased on his demonstration of community involvement that has enriched the lives of others, and [the] evidence of ongoing leadership, discipline and dedication, he has proven fit to receive this award.鈥

James is the director of the 91亚色 Centre for Education & Community (YCEC) in the Faculty of Education where he engages in research and program activities that address education, schooling and community issues. A former youth leader, James is recognized locally, nationally and internationally for his work with marginalized communities and for his research on issues related to equity, educational access and social justice. In his more than 20 years as an educator, scholar, leader and mentor, James has strived to broaden the discussion of social issues, influence policy development, and pave the path of social progress in many societies in Canada and elsewhere.

Seen as 鈥渁 coveted symbol of achievement鈥, the 16 awards that make up the Harry Jerome Awards are handed out each year in the categories of: Academics, Athletics, Arts, Media, Community Service, Health Sciences, Leadership, Lifetime Achievement, Youth Entrepreneurs, Business, Leadership, Professional Excellence, Technology & Innovation, Trailblazer, Diversity and the President鈥檚 Award.

Established in the memory of Harry Jerome, an outstanding African Canadian Olympic Athlete, scholar and social advocate, the BBPA Harry Jerome Awards celebrates African-Canadian achievement that pays tribute to outstanding and inspirational African-Canadians who are role models of excellence.
