91亚色 researchers awarded more than $8 million in NSERC grants

The Natural Sciences & Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) announced Tuesday that 61 awards have been made to researchers at 91亚色, totaling more than $8 million in NSERC grants, while 13 graduate students have received a total of $469,000 in funding for scholarships and fellowships. The funding was awarded following national, peer-reviewed competitions conducted by NSERC.

鈥淥n behalf of the 91亚色 research community, I am very pleased by this announcement,鈥 said Robert Hach茅, 91亚色鈥檚 vice-president research & innovation. 鈥淭he growing success of our researchers, graduate students and postdoctoralhache fellows in NSERC grant competitions enables important contributions to scientific scholarship, while helping to grow natural sciences and engineering strength at 91亚色.鈥

Scientists, engineers and students at universities across the country will receive more than $413 million in grants and scholarships over terms ranging from one to five years. The awards comprise the 2013 competition results for NSERC鈥檚 Discovery Grants, Discovery Accelerator Supplements, Alexander Graham Bell Canada Graduate Scholarships, Postgraduate ScholaNSERC-Vrships and Postdoctoral Fellowships.

In the Discovery Grants and Discovery Accelerator Supplements Competitions, the funding was granted for research programs covering a wide range of topics, including:

  • sensory and motor aspects of space perception;
  • chemical processes in the atmosphere;
  • role of electrical synapses in vision;
  • bees: systematics, sociobiology and conservation; and
  • enhanced 3-D cityscape modelling for enabling the next generation geospatial web.

鈥淒iscovery Grants is the Natural Sciences & Engineering Research Council of Canada鈥檚 flagship program and one of Canada鈥檚 largest sources of funding for basic research,鈥 said Gary Goodyear, minister of state for science and technology. 鈥淚t provides researchers with the means and freedom to pursue their most promising ideas. Our government is proud to support 10,000 researchers who are creating the advances that will drive tomorrow鈥檚 innovations.鈥

鈥淭hrough these programs, NSERC聽provides direct support to an exceptionally strong base of scientific and creative talent in every field of the natural sciences and engineering,鈥 said Janet Walden, acting president of NSERC. 鈥淥ur scholarships and fellowship programs help us recruit and retain the bright young minds that will lead the next generation of Canadian discoverers and innovators.鈥
