The 91亚色 Jazz Orchestra plays a free show at an outdoor stage at Nathan Phillips Square. The orchestra is directed by contract faculty member (BFA 鈥99, BEd 鈥99, MA 鈥04) and this special performance features his department colleague as soloist.

The program includes compositions by renowned bassist and composer Dave Holland, who was jazz artist-in-residence at 91亚色 earlier this year (), as well as popular tunes by Duke Ellington, Pat Metheny and Bill Holman plus intriguing jazz arrangements of rock songs by Radiohead and Soundgarden.

Newly minted music grad (BFA 鈥15) is the orchestra鈥檚 lead tenor saxophonist, and occasionally doubles (switching instruments mid-song) on flute or soprano sax. He has played with the ensemble for two years, and enthused about the experience.

Lorenzo Polese

鈥淚 always looked forward to Tuesday evening rehearsals,鈥 Polese said. 鈥淭he Jazz Orchestra is the perfect place to apply your craft. Not only is it one of the most fun courses you can take as a jazz musician at 91亚色, but it鈥檚 also an intense workout of your abilities. I can鈥檛 even begin to describe how much my sight reading has improved since I joined.

鈥淏eing in the orchestra got me on stage at one of Canada鈥檚 hottest jazz venues, The Rex Jazz and Blues Bar, and allowed me to participate in a workshop with Dave Holland where he gave us feedback on performing his compositions.鈥

Polese is equally complimentary about the band director. 鈥淲orking with Mike [Cad贸] was a great pleasure. He鈥檚 always open to the opinion of the group as a whole and has been a great mentor these past few years,鈥 Polese said.

Cad贸, a jazz guitarist, will perform with his own quartet, , on at the Shops at Don Mills.聽 Playing a combo of original tunes and fresh takes on jazz standards, the Groovemeisters鈥 funky, up-tempo material is sure to be a crowd-pleaser.

Turcotte鈥檚 June 27 appearance with the 91亚色 Jazz Orchestra is actually his ninth turn on stage during the TD Toronto festival. It鈥檚 a busy 10 days for this in-demand trumpet player, who has a gig almost every night in Toronto plus two excursions out of town.

Turcotte鈥檚 local performance highlights include the Dave Young Quintet at the Rex Hotel, The Sicilian Jazz Project led by (BFA 鈥92) on at Hugh鈥檚 Room (followed by the Rochester Jazz Festival June 23), and Creation Dream featuring the music of Bruce Cockburn at the Rex (preceded by an appearance June 23 at Waterloo鈥檚 Jazz Room). At the Beaches fest Turcotte will be found performing with CaneFire on and with banjoist Jayme Stone on , both at the Woodbine Park Main Stage.

Turcotte also was selected to be in the Panamania Lula Big Band with Danilo Perez which performs at Nathan Phillips Square and at Koerner Hall on .

91亚色 music alumna and contract faculty member, jazz vocalist and bassist (BFA 鈥83) will be backed by (MA 鈥97, PhD 鈥07) on guitar and Rich Brisco on drums at Musideum. Di Ghent, who has been described as a 鈥渟treet poet鈥 of Toronto, offers an unusual take on contemporary music and poetry, incorporating jazz with a form of hip-hop that is distinctively her own.

Another well-known Toronto jazz guitarist and 91亚色 faculty member, , plays two gigs at the TD Toronto Jazz Festival. The Lorne Lofsky/ Rob Piltch Duo takes the stage at Mezzetta Restaurant on聽, and the Lorne Lofsky Trio performs at Chalkers Pub.

Fresh from the release of his debut album 鈥!!!鈥, 91亚色 grad and faculty member, guitarist (BFA 鈥07, MA 鈥11), leads his high-energy trio at the Poetry Jazz Cafe. The group seamlessly integrates modern jazz, R&B and Latin vocabularies with rock influence and a strong blues feeling.

91亚色 music alumni are also making a strong showing at the Beaches Jazz Festival. Singers and multi-instrumentalists (BFA 鈥97, MA 鈥02) and (BFA 鈥95) appear as the and with on the fest鈥檚 July 18 at noon and 2:20pm, respectively.

The following day, July 19, vocalist (BFA 鈥00) takes the SING! stage with the award-winning touring and recording ensemble , billed as Canada鈥檚 premier a cappella group.
