Vice-President Research & Innovation Robert Haché released the draft of the University’s Plan for the Intensification and Enhancement of Research (PIER) Monday that was developed on the basis of community consultation over the past several months. PIER is meant to provide a framework for the engagement of individuals, units and Faculties in growing the intensification of research, scholarship and related creative activity at 91ɫ, a major objective of the University’s Academic and Strategic Research Plans. .

“I am pleased to release the consultation draft of the University’s Plan for the Intensification and Enhancement of Research,” said Haché. “The draft of PIER is a result of the deliberations of the PIER Working Group and extensive consultations with members of the 91ɫ community. All members of the 91ɫ community are invited to provide feedback on the consultation draft of PIER through an open forum on March 30, and by submitting comments through PIER’s online portal.”

PIER offers recommendations to strengthen 91ɫ’s research enterprise across five thematic areas and is informed by the University’s Strategic Research Plan, Building on Strength.
The PIER recommendations are meant to build upon the basic supports that are provided to all researchers at 91ɫ in support of their pursuit of research, scholarship and related creative activity. The recommendations are varied, and cover academic, administrative and support needs. The importance of local engagement and action was highlighted throughout the conversations around PIER.
The recommendations are clustered according to five broad areas:
- Growing a Culture of Scholarly Inquiry;
- Investing In & Promoting People;
- Supporting Research Growth & Development;
- Leadership in Research & Research Advocacy; and,
- Building Research for the Future.
The development of PIER was guided by a working group comprised of representatives of the broader 91ɫ community, which met regularly, as well as input received through extensive consultations across the University that began in the fall of 2015 and concluded in early 2016.
