Professor听Vivek听Kumar (Jawaharlal Nehru University)听will deliver the inaugural Dr.听Ambedkar听Memorial Lecture at 91亚色听on Nov. 15, as part of a series of lectures across Canada organized by the听Dr. Ambedkar听International Mission (AIM) Canada.
At 91亚色, the lecture is presented by the 91亚色 Centre for Asian Research (YCAR) with support from the Faculty of Liberal Arts & Professional Studies.听
AIM established the memorial lecture to commemorate the multifaceted contributions of Bhimrao听Ramji听Ambedkar, an Indian scholar, jurist and activist who is an iconic figure in the history of anti-caste struggles.听
鈥淲e have听a history of commemorating听Ambedkar鈥檚 work听at 91亚色,鈥 said Abidin Kusno, YCAR director. 鈥淚n听addition to research, teaching听and events featuring听Ambedkar鈥檚听work at 91亚色, we also听have听a bust of听Ambedkar听in Scott Library, which was听installed in听2015 to honour his contributions to social justice听and education.鈥听
In his talk听at 91亚色, Kumar will decode ideas of modernity and nation building in听Ambedkar鈥檚听work听and听highlight why his idea of self-representation听is听important听in the process of nation building.听He听will trace the evolution of different shades of movements launched听by听Ambedkar, his role听in the making of the Indian Constitution and his听image听as a听global icon.听
Kumar is a professor of sociology at the Centre for the Study of Social Systems, School of Social Sciences, Jawaharlal Nehru University,听New听Delhi.听His latest book is 鈥Caste and Democracy in India: A Perspective from Below. Kumar听was听a听Nehru-Fulbright Teachers Fellow听at the Department of Sociology,听Columbia University.听He听was also a visiting faculty member at the Institute of Asian & African Studies, Humboldt University in Berlin.听听听
