student Nikunj Thakur is balancing coursework, exams and group projects with another significant responsibility: helping lead a technology startup.

Thakur is the founding engineer and chief technology officer (CTO) of Tally Rewards, a platform that helps small and medium-sized businesses create customer loyalty programs. The platform allows customers to automatically earn rewards through linked payment cards, while providing businesses with data on customer visits, spending and engagement.

Building a company is demanding in its own right, but while helping lead the company's product development and technical strategy, he is also completing a software engineering degree at 91亚色.

Balancing those responsibilities hasn鈥檛 always been easy.

"There have been periods where assignments, exams, product deadlines and company responsibilities have all happened at the same time," he says.

The challenge has grown alongside the company, as his role has expanded beyond engineering to include leadership, team development and long-term planning.

For Thakur, balancing a startup while completing an engineering degree has become an education in itself.

"It has forced me to become much more intentional with how I manage my time and prioritize what actually needs my attention,鈥 he says.

The opportunity to gain that kind of hands-on learning while studying was one of the reasons he chose 91亚色.

"91亚色 stood out to me not only because of the engineering program, but also because of the entrepreneurial support and pathways available to students," he says.

Thakur says the overlap between classroom learning and real-world experience has accelerated his growth. Concepts introduced through his coursework, including software design, testing and large-scale software development, often influence how he approaches challenges at Tally Rewards.

Classroom learning was only part of the experience. 91亚色鈥檚 entrepreneurship programs have also shaped his approach to building a business. In addition to his software engineering coursework, Thakur has pursued opportunities through Lassonde's BEST (Bergeron Entrepreneurs in Science and Technology) program and entrepreneurship courses available through .

Designed to help students develop the skills and understanding needed to launch a startup, these learning opportunities encouraged him to think beyond technology and focus on understanding users, validating ideas and building sustainable businesses.

As a result, Thakur has gained new insights into his role as CTO at Tally Rewards.

"Being a CTO isn't only about being a strong engineer. It's also about helping a team make good decisions and ensuring that what we build actually supports the direction of the business,鈥 he says. 鈥淪ome of the most important work happens before you write any code.鈥

The combination of technical and venture creation education has been one of the most valuable aspects of Thakur's 91亚色 experience.

"My engineering courses at Lassonde have given me the technical foundation to build reliable systems, while the entrepreneurship experiences have helped me understand why those systems should be built and who they should be built for," he says.

Looking ahead, Thakur hopes to continue growing as both an engineer and entrepreneur while completing his degree.

"University is actually a unique environment to experiment because you're surrounded by people who are learning, building and willing to help," he says.

Despite the challenges of juggling both, Thakur believes students interested in entrepreneurship should take advantage of the opportunities available at 91亚色 and not wait until they feel fully prepared before pursuing an idea.

"A lot of students assume they need to have the perfect idea, a complete skill set or a detailed plan before they can build something," he says. "In reality, a huge part of entrepreneurship is learning as you go."

91亚色's Indigenous Pathways Program (IPP) is creating opportunities for Indigenous learners to experience university life and explore what a future at 91亚色 could look like.

For many Indigenous learners, choosing a post-secondary institution involves more than academics. A community of support, culturally responsive spaces and a sense of belonging can influence where students see themselves succeeding.

In partnership with Ontario Federation of Indigenous Friendship Centres, 91亚色's Office of Indigenous Initiatives, the five-day Indigenous Pathways Program helps aspiring Indigenous learners ages 18 and older build meaningful and intentional connections ahead of their academic journeys. The immersive experience introduces participants to 91亚色's academic offerings while connecting them to the University鈥檚 Indigenous-focused spaces, resources, supports, staff and faculty across its three campuses.

By helping learners feel welcomed, supported and able to envision a future at 91亚色, the program fosters belonging and helps build confidence, clarity and purpose leading up to the transition to post-secondary education. It also reflects a broader institutional commitment to Indigenous student success, says Holly LaForme, manager, Indigenous initiatives at 91亚色鈥檚 Division of Equity, People & Culture.

鈥淔or many Indigenous learners, education systems have not always felt safe, welcoming or full of possibility. Arriving at a large urban institution, often far from family, community and familiar supports, can feel overwhelming,鈥 says LaForme, who helped lead the IPP project. 鈥淎t the Centre for Indigenous Student Services, connection and community-building are foundational to the way we support student success. My hope is to bring a sense of care, familiarity and relationality to the university experience so Indigenous learners feel grounded as they adapt to a new environment, explore their identity and define their path forward.鈥

Throughout the week, participants stayed in residence and engaged with faculty, staff, current students and alumni. In collaboration with the Faculty of Liberal Arts & Professional Studies, programming highlighted a range of academic pathways through experiences that included a session with Indigenous scholar, 91亚色 assistant professor and acclaimed author Jesse Thistle; workshops in creative writing and social work; hands-on engineering and AI activities at the ; career-focused programming at the , including an Indigenous alumni panel; and a visit to 91亚色's Markham Campus for a immersive day that concluded with a sacred fire.

For participant Sheena Kitchemokman, meeting other Indigenous students and learning about resources available at 91亚色 were key reasons for joining the program.

"The reason why I signed up for the Indigenous Pathways Program is to see what opportunities are available and to meet other Indigenous students who are going to 91亚色," she says.

That sense of connection is a central focus of the program, says LaForme. By introducing participants to Indigenous faculty, students, alumni and support staff, the program helps learners build relationships and gain a clearer understanding of what life at university can look like.

鈥淩ather than asking students to imagine whether they belong in a post-secondary environment, the program provides a meaningful way for participants to experience that community firsthand,鈥 says LaForme, who notes some learners travelled from northern communities to participate.

Those connections, she adds, extend beyond the classroom. Participants are introduced to Indigenous spaces across 91亚色鈥檚 campuses, including Skennen鈥檏贸:wa Gamig, an Indigenous support centre at 91亚色鈥檚 Keele Campus where Indigenous students can use the space for community and cultural connection. For Kitchemokman, it was a welcoming space that left a lasting impression.

"My favourite space on campus is the native student lounge," she says of Skennen鈥檏贸:wa Gamig. "It really does make me feel at home."

Finding this strong sense of community, as well as a clearer understanding of academic options, strengthened her confidence in choosing 91亚色 for her post-secondary studies. She describes one session she attended as inspiring, noting she had 鈥済oosebumps listening to the panel talk about their life experiences and education stories.鈥

She says the program would benefit all Indigenous learners 鈥 especially those considering 91亚色.

"Coming to the Indigenous Pathways Program has convinced me that this is the right university for me because of all the love and support you get from faculty and student bodies," she says.

Although the Indigenous Pathways Program spans five days, its impact extends beyond a single week.

鈥淏y helping prospective students explore university life, connect with Indigenous community and experience the care and shared hopes offered by non-Indigenous allies, friends, peers and partners across the 91亚色 U community, the program creates meaningful pathways into post-secondary education,鈥 says LaForme.

鈥淏eing able to physically experience these spaces, build relationships and see oneself at 91亚色 is an important first step in making that future feel real, supported and full of possibility.鈥

LaForme says the program, which ran July 27 to 31, has already encouraged some of the participants to apply.

Research led by 91亚色 Associate Professor Brent Lyons argues that better understanding the diversity of hearing disabilities could help employers improve accommodations, reduce workplace barriers and unlock employees' full potential.

More than 1.5 billion people worldwide live with a hearing disability, a number projected to rise significantly in the coming decades as the workforce ages. Yet many workplaces remain poorly equipped to understand or address the challenges employees with hearing disabilities face every day.

Lyons of the researches hearing diversity and workplace inclusion. He also has lived experience with hearing disabilities and says many organizations continue to overlook an important reality.

"Hearing disabilities are often misunderstood and treated as a single, uniform experience. In fact, they are quite diverse," says Lyons.

When employers fail to recognize that variation, well-intentioned efforts to support workers can fall short.

"Without recognizing this diversity, this can lead to ineffective accommodations, communication barriers, stigma and missed opportunities for employees with hearing disabilities to contribute their skills and expertise."

Lyons wanted to draw attention to the reality that these workers do not all experience the workplace in the same way. To that end, he partnered with David Baldridge of Oregon State University, another researcher with lived experience of hearing disability and years of experience studying its effects on employment. Together, they authored a paper, now published in Organizational Dynamics, that explores hearing diversity in the workplace and outlines practical, research-informed strategies for creating more inclusive work environments.

To inform the paper, Lyons and Baldridge reviewed research from a range of disciplines, including hearing science, audiology, disability studies and human resource management. They combined those findings with their own work and lived experience to identify common themes across the literature, including workplace obstacles, barriers to inclusion and strategies shown to support communication.

The scholars identified a range of recurring obstacles, from difficult-to-follow meetings and noisy work environments to conversation breakdowns and reluctance to seek accommodations. They also found that hearing experiences are far more diverse than many people realize, with employees differing in their hearing experiences as well as the communication tools and strategies they rely on.

The review further highlighted how everyday activities can become hurdles. Meetings, telephone calls, conferences, social events, work travel and even hiring processes can present obstacles for employees with hearing disabilities. Hybrid meetings can be particularly difficult because participants may struggle to see and hear everyone clearly, while social gatherings often take place in noisy environments that make conversations harder to follow.

One finding that Lyons believes receives too little attention was feels does not receive enough attention: how much mental energy people with hearing disabilities often devote to following everyday conversations, and how frequently that burden is underestimated by both others and the individuals experiencing it.

"The extensive effort that goes into keeping up with everyday conversations can be invisible to others," Lyons says.

The researchers also drew a distinction between hearing and understanding. Employees with hearing disabilities may catch parts of a conversation while missing others, particularly in noisy settings. That can make it difficult for staff to know when important information has been missed or misunderstood, helping explain why everyday interactions can require so much mental effort.

But documenting those challenges was only part of what the researchers set out to do. Recognizing the diversity of hearing experiences, Lyons and Baldridge sought to provide practical, evidence-based guidance that organizations can adapt to individual workers鈥 needs and create more inclusive workplaces.

Among their recommendations is making accessibility part of everyday practice rather than treating it as a special accommodation. Simple measures such as enabling captions, sharing written agendas and meeting summaries, encouraging one person to speak at a time and reducing background noise can make interactions easier for many employees. The authors also stress the importance of regular conversations between managers and team members about communication needs, recognizing that hearing experiences can vary widely from person to person and even from day to day.

More broadly, the researchers advocate a layered approach that combines accessible workplace design, supportive management practices and appropriate technologies, including captioning services, remote microphones and sign-language interpretation where needed. While emerging tools such as AI-powered captioning and speech-to-text services offer new opportunities to improve accessibility, Lyons and Baldridge say technology alone is not enough. Meaningful progress, they argue, comes from recognizing hearing diversity and building accessibility into everyday workplace interactions.

"We hope this work helps organizations move beyond generic accommodations toward more individualized, inclusive practices, while empowering people with hearing disabilities to share their own experiences and advocate for their communication needs," Lyons says.

More than $9.3 million in new federal funding will support 42 91亚色-led research projects across the social sciences and humanities, including AI, health, equity and social change.

Awarded through the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council's (SSHRC) Insight Grants program, the funding supports medium- and long-term research initiatives over four to six years.

The projects, led by 91亚色 researchers across multiple Faculties and research units, address issues affecting communities in Canada and around the world with research topics that explore a range of issues with local, national and global significance.

"SSHRC Insight Grants enable researchers to pursue ambitious, long-term programs of inquiry that deepen understanding of complex social issues and generate knowledge with real-world relevance," says Amir Asif, vice-president research and innovation. "This year's funded projects demonstrate the remarkable breadth of 91亚色's research strengths, spanning health and well-being, artificial intelligence and emerging technologies, Indigenous knowledge and cultural resurgence, education, labour markets, environmental and climate challenges, social inclusion, governance and public policy. Together these projects will generate new insights that help inform policy, practice and public dialogue in Canada and around the world."

Among the largest grants is a six-year, $463,646 project led by Stephanie Ben-Ishai () examining the financial and psychological effects of insolvency. Ann Marie Murnaghan (Faculty of Liberal Arts & Professional Studies) received $459,784 for a six-year project focused on cultural resurgence in Witsuwit'en territories, while Michael Kalu () received $456,501 for research examining the needs of Black older adults and developing Afrocentric-informed strategies.

Other significant awards include Andrea Emberly's (LA&PS) six-year study exploring community connection and musical arts among young people, funded at $435,379, and Shital Desai's () six-year, $417,127 project investigating approaches to strengthening communication and relationships in dementia care. Enakshi Dua (LA&PS) received $411,890 for a five-year project that explores the changing landscape of diversity, equity, inclusion and decolonization initiatives.

Several funded projects examine the social implications of artificial intelligence and emerging technologies. Christo El Morr (Faculty of Health) received $396,562 for Mapping Workplace Racism in Canada: A Community-Driven AI Platform Grounded in Ontario, while sava saheli singh's (Faculty of Education) Machine Learning or Learning Machines: Critical AI Futures in Education received $111,678. Isha Sharma (LA&PS) received $123,659 to study the adoption and impact of agentic AI in financial crime compliance.

Health and social well-being are also prominent themes. Mary Fox (Faculty of Health) received $400,708 to develop an e-learning intervention aimed at disrupting ageism in social work education, while Nazilla Khanlou's (Faculty of Health) $390,389 project will examine supports for racialized families of children and youth with developmental disabilities. Kerry Scott (Faculty of Health) received $286,282 to investigate public trust and engagement with Ontario's health system.

Other projects, listed below, explore immigrant inequality, labour market barriers, disability and education policy, climate and energy transitions, Indigenous resurgence, entrepreneurship in the age of AI, anti-human trafficking and cultural heritage, and more, reflecting the breadth of 91亚色's research strengths.

CONNECTED MINDS: FROM IDEA TO IMPACT

This summer, YFile examines how 91亚色-led researchers move ideas into impact through the Connected Minds Prototyping Awards. This series shows innovation in practice 鈥 how socially responsible technologies are tested in real-world settings and how this work drives meaningful change.

In an era where health information is only a few clicks away, finding answers that are accurate, trustworthy and easy to understand can still be a challenge.

Scientific databases contain vast amounts of knowledge about human health and disease, but much of it is written for researchers and clinicians using specialized language and technical terminology. For other individuals trying to understand a diagnosis, assess a health risk or learn about a specific condition, navigating this complex landscape can be overwhelming.

91亚色 is collaborating with researchers at the Ontario Institute for Cancer Research (OICR) to break down these barriers through an AI-powered chatbot that provides accessible, easy-to-understand health information.

The chatbot serves as a conversational interface for Reactome, one of the world's largest curated databases of biological pathways and processes that drive human health and disease. While widely used by biomedical researchers, Reactome's technical language can make its information difficult for non-experts to understand.

Amin Mawani, director of the Master of Health Industry Administration (MHIA) program at 91亚色鈥檚 , contributes patient and user perspectives to the project, which also brings together Lincoln Stein, scientific director (interim) and head of Adaptive Oncology at OICR; Helia Mohammadi, a graduate student at the University of Toronto; and Adam Wright, a scientific software engineer at OICR.

Drawing on the power of AI, the chatbot allows users to search Reactome in natural language and receive answers in a clear, user-friendly format tailored to their level of understanding. Whether someone wants to know what causes diabetes, learn more about a genetic predisposition to cancer or explore why they feel tired after eating carbohydrates, the tool is designed to translate complex scientific concepts into plain language.

Mawani says the broader goal is to make trusted scientific knowledge more accessible and strengthen connections between researchers and the public. 鈥淭his tool helps to close the gaps in understanding between the research community and the citizens whose tax dollars support them,鈥 he says.

The project received support through the Connected Minds Prototyping Award, a program that helps researchers translate promising ideas into practical tools. The funding supported a graduate student and a scientific software developer who moved the project from concept through prototype development and into production. The project's emphasis on accessibility and inclusivity reflects the mission of Connected Minds 鈥 a multi-million-dollar transdisciplianry research initiative led by 91亚色 and Queen's universities to develop socially responsible technologies that benefit diverse communities.

Today, the chatbot is fully operational and serves approximately 500 unique users each month. Users can ask for information on a range of topics, from everyday health concerns to more complex scientific concepts.

As more people turn to online tools for health information, the team notes the source of the chatbot's answers is central to its value.

One of the project's key goals is to combat health misinformation by drawing its responses from curated databases rather than unverified online sources. By providing scientifically grounded answers, the platform helps users make more informed decisions about their health.

The team also sees the chatbot as a tool for improving health equity. By offering information in multiple languages, it is able to serve users from diverse backgrounds, regardless of health knowledge or familiarity with English.

"Our goal is to bring structured and accurate scientific medical information to people from all backgrounds and communities in a way that removes barriers created by technical language and accessibility challenges," says Mawani.

According to Mawani, better access to reliable health information can have impacts that extend beyond individual users. More informed patients may be better equipped to recognize misleading or false claims, seek timely medical care and take preventive steps before conditions become more serious.

In addition to helping members of the public better understand their own health, the technology has potential applications for researchers. Future enhancements will allow users to analyze large biological datasets and interpret results through simple natural-language prompts.

As the project gains momentum, the team plans to expand awareness of the tool through publications, conferences, workshops and tutorials, while integrating the chatbot more deeply within the Reactome platform.

By making trusted biomedical knowledge easier to access while supporting future scientific discovery, Mawani and his colleagues hope the platform will improve health outcomes for communities and offer researchers a more streamlined way to access knowledge.

A startup founded by graduates is using AI to support real estate investors, designed and launched with support from collaborations at 91亚色.

is an AI platform built for real estate and asset management co-founded by Gaurav Madani and Arunabh Dastidar, who met as Schulich MBA students in 2017 and graduated together in 2019. The tool鈥檚 third co-founder, Zain Nathoo, is also a Schulich alum.

The platform was created to solve fragmented data challenges in real estate investing by using AI to organize information and provide customizable systems that help investment teams analyze data, automate tasks and make faster decisions. These were challenges both Dastidar and Nathoo encountered while working in real estate investment and helping to manage more than $1 billion in property assets.

Frustrated by delays in financial reports 鈥 which often arrived in spreadsheets weeks late and slowed decision-making 鈥 they turn to Schulich for guidance and support to bring their solution to market.

Early on, the founders brought their idea to Chris Carder, executive director of Schulich's Office of Innovation and Entrepreneurship. Madani recalls approaching Carder, who at the time was alone in the Schulich cafeteria, and sharing the team鈥檚 idea. Carder offered the team direction, facilitated important connections and amplified the company within his own network.

"He was a sounding board, which is what founders need in the early days," Madani says. "Especially in the early days when no one knows you, those kinds of things are really important."

Beyond Carder, the company drew on other forms of support at Schulich. Andre Kuzmicki, retired professor, introduced the team to senior professionals at large Canadian institutions who would become some of Leni's first clients.

As well, Schulich's Entrepreneurial Studies program has partnered with Leni to create student internships.

"Schulich gave us a community of people who believed in what we were building and opened doors that would have been much harder to access on our own," says Dastidar. "That early support was instrumental in helping us gain traction and credibility as we scaled."

While Leni began by connecting industry systems to track performance in real time, it evolved to integrate AI, which became central to its development from 2022 onward.

Today, it helps investment teams evaluate deals, conduct research and automate reporting tasks that would otherwise take days.

Madani says Leni stands out for its focus on accuracy. It is trained to break complex questions into parts, route them across multiple AI models, evaluate whether the responses meet its threshold, and surfaces an answer only when it passes 鈥 along with the reasoning and source data behind it.

"Leni will always treat any output as a hypothesis that needs to be proven," he says.

As the company expands, the relationship with Schulich continues in both directions. Leni's founders now serve as mentors, judges and guest lecturers with Schulich Startups, where they contribute to the same ecosystem that helped them get started.

For students who are thinking about building their own tool, Madani's advice is simple: "No two entrepreneurial journeys look the same," he says, adding that Schulich鈥檚 support was instrumental to Leni鈥檚 success.

Is there anything that can make a commute more satisfying? A new study co-authored by Winny Shen, an associate professor of organization studies at 91亚色's , suggests there is: predictability.

For many people across the Greater Toronto Area, commuting is a significant part of daily life. "Toronto is a city where there can be a lot of traffic congestion and many people's commutes are quite long," says Shen, whose research explores worker health and well-being.

For many of those commuters, the trip back and forth is one of the least enjoyable parts of the day, triggering stress, fatigue and lost time. Researchers have traditionally focused on those challenges, often emphasizing objective measures such as distance and travel time.

Shen, however, has in, as she puts it, 鈥渉ow commutes may have benefits rather than only the 鈥榮tress鈥 and 鈥榖urden鈥 that a lot of research describes.鈥

In collaboration with researchers in Israel and the U.S., Shen set out to better understand why some people are more satisfied with their journeys to work than others, focusing on a key psychological factor: predictability.

Two commutes that take the same amount of time can feel very different if one is consistently reliable while the other is plagued by unexpected delays, she notes. The study theorizes that predictability might improve the commuting experience in two ways: by reducing stress and by giving workers a greater sense of control over how they spend their time.

To test the idea, researchers conducted a three-week study involving 379 full-time employees who commuted to work at least twice a week. Across three surveys, participants answered questions about how consistent their daily journeys are, their levels of stress and autonomy during the journey and their overall enjoyment of the experience.

The results, published in the , found that commuters are more satisfied with their trip when they could reliably predict how long it would take, regardless of length. The study also finds that this relationship is driven by a greater sense of autonomy or control over how commuting time was spent.

This desire for control may stem from the ability to plan how commuting time will be used, the researchers say. Someone who knows their travel time will take 45 minutes can decide in advance whether to listen to a podcast, mentally prepare for the workday, unwind after work or simply enjoy a few moments to themselves. In this way, the commute can become a psychological buffer between work and home life. By contrast, a commuter facing uncertainty and unexpected delays may be more focused on the possibility of disruptions than on what they can do with the journey.

This distinction matters, says Shen, because commuting experiences do not necessarily end when the journey is over. Previous research has shown the effects of a commute can spill over into other areas of life, influencing well-being, job satisfaction and experiences at home.

"We know that people can bring the stresses of their commute with them to work and also into their homes in the evening," says Shen. "Given this, we are interested in how to make commutes less stressful and more beneficial for workers."

In the paper, Shen and her co-authors suggest transportation planners and employers can help improve commuter well-being by investing in more reliable transportation systems, accurate real-time travel information and flexible work arrangements that increase reliability. More broadly, they argue that commuting should not be viewed simply as lost time; when people can reliably anticipate how their trip will unfold, they may be able to use that time in ways that support well-being.

Additional work is needed to understand the relationship between predictability and commuter well-being. Future studies, says Shen, could incorporate physiological measures of stress such as cortisol levels, examine more diverse populations and transportation systems, include larger numbers of public transit users and test interventions such as flexible scheduling policies. The authors also suggest exploring whether the way trip information is presented influences how commuters experience consistency and control.

"We hope that this work will help people to consider how to make their commutes more enjoyable and useful to them, perhaps for recovery or to get ahead with work or family responsibilities," says Shen. "Although commuting may be inevitable, it does not have to be 'wasted' or an unpleasant time.鈥

CONNECTED MINDS: FROM IDEA TO IMPACT

This summer, YFile examines how 91亚色-led researchers move ideas into impact through the Connected Minds Prototyping Awards. This series shows innovation in practice 鈥 how socially responsible technologies are tested in real-world settings and how this work drives meaningful change.

In the field of mental health care, administrative pressures take valuable time away from patient care.

Many independent mental health care providers, including therapists and counsellors, face growing clerical demands. From scheduling and intake forms to documentation and follow-ups, when these responsibilities are managed through fragmented systems it creates inefficiencies for practitioners and patients.

At 91亚色, M. Murat Kristal, professor of operations management and information systems and director of the MBA in technology leadership at the , is working to address this challenge. Kristal is the founder of HazelCare, a digital health platform designed to support mental health practitioners through responsible AI, privacy-by-design principles and human-centred technology.

HazelCare brings together core administrative functions 鈥 including appointment booking, patient onboarding, documentation and communication 鈥 into a single, user-friendly system. The integration of AI tools offers enhanced operations by using natural language processing to support clinical notetaking, predictive analytics to reduce missed appointments and virtual assistants to guide patients through onboarding.

鈥淗azelCare emerged from my long-standing interest in understanding how technology can be used to solve meaningful societal challenges while preserving trust, empathy and human connection,鈥 says Kristal.

Rather than simply digitizing administrative tasks, HazelCare is designed as an AI-enabled practice platform that augments practitioner workflows while preserving the human relationship at the centre of mental health care.

Working alongside Kristal to bring this innovation to market are team members across various disciplines and diverse expertise. Longtime Schulich instructor Altay Aksulu, a solutions portfolio manager with the Ontario Public Service, brings industry experience to the team, helping ensure the platform meets real-world needs. Alex Volkov, a 91亚色 computer science graduate and senior software developer, leads the platform鈥檚 technical direction and architecture, bringing more than 15 years of experience building full-stack applications across government, enterprise and SaaS environments.

Murat and his team received the Phase 1 Connected Minds Prototyping Award, which provides up to $20,000 to support early-stage prototype development. Connected Minds is a $318.4-million transdisciplinary research program led by 91亚色 in partnership with Queen's University focused on the study of human-AI interactions to ensure future technologies are ethical, healthy and equitable.

Backed by the Canada First Research Excellence Fund and a network of more than 50 industry, hospital and community partners, the program funds transdisciplinary teams to move ideas beyond research into tangible prototypes though these awards.

With this support, Kristal's team has advanced HazelCare from a concept into a functional, pilot-ready platform. The funding enabled the development of core features, system architecture and testing processes.

鈥淏eyond the financial support, the award provided important validation of the project鈥檚 vision and potential societal impact,鈥 says Kristal.

Through the prototyping process, the team learned the value of designing technology around real user workflows. In a complex, highly regulated field like health care, this means balancing usability, privacy, security and regulatory requirements while ensuring the platform remains intuitive for both practitioners and patients. The result is a system that supports end-to-end workflows and is positioned for pilot testing.

By reducing administrative strain on independent providers, HazelCare could help expand access to mental health services, enabling practitioners to take on more clients while maintaining quality of care.

While practitioners benefit from more integrated workflows, the impact is also felt by patients. Instead of navigating multiple platforms to book appointments, complete intake and receive updates, patients can move through a more streamlined process from initial contact through ongoing engagement.

Kristal says HazelCare bridges new technologies and the human-centred nature of care resulting in a more connected and equitable mental health care system.

Moving toward implementation, the team will test HazelCare by working with practitioners to evaluate how it performs in real-world settings. Future enhancements to the platform include improving practitioner support tools, strengthening analytics and exploring responsible AI additions.

鈥淥ur goal is not simply to build software, but to demonstrate how responsible AI can strengthen the relationship between practitioners and patients while expanding access to mental health care,鈥 says Kristal.

Set to launch in September 2026, the EPS Executive Development Program is an educational initiative developed to advance learning in crime management, leadership development and service excellence 鈥 three strategic pillars outlined by EPS Chief Warren Driechel.

Delivered in collaboration with Schulich ExecEd, the initiative is designed for senior leaders across EPS, including both sworn and civilian members, to strengthen internal leadership capacity and support teams while emphasizing employee development and well-being. It also reinforces accountability by equipping participants with tools to make informed decisions, uphold organizational standards and lead with integrity.
