Founder Fundamentals EP 4: Founder-Led Sales & Customer Acquisition with Vincent Tsang

Founder Fundamentals returned for week four this Fall 2026, with entrepreneur, sales coach, and business advisor leading a session on founder-led sales and customer acquisition. Drawing from over 25 years of entrepreneurial experience, including bootstrapping a company from a $3,000 investment to seven-figure annual revenue and a successful acquisition, Vincent shared practical strategies for winning customers, standing out from competitors, and building sustainable revenue. From finding your competitive advantage and reaching customers creatively to mastering discovery calls and following up effectively, the session challenged founders to stop overcomplicating sales and focus on the actions that actually generate business.

Build Revenue by Solving One Problem Well

For early-stage founders, the temptation to offer multiple products or services can be difficult to resist, especially when opportunities for additional revenue arise. However, Vincent emphasized that trying to solve too many problems too early creates challenges in both sales and operations.

Using a window-washing business as an example, he explained how accepting additional lawn-care work might increase short-term revenue but also introduces new equipment, skills, and operational demands that distract from the core business.

His advice was to focus on solving one problem exceptionally well before diversifying. A strong business foundation also requires genuine interest in the problem being solved, relevant knowledge, and the resilience to navigate difficult periods.

Know What Makes Your Business Different

Being good at what you do is not enough when customers have several alternatives. Founders need to clearly communicate why someone should choose their business over a competitor.

Vincent encouraged participants to identify their competitive advantage in one memorable sentence. This could come from a unique offering, specialized expertise, or even the founder's personal and professional journey.

He offered a simple test: Could 90% of your competitors make the same claim? If the answer is yes, your differentiator probably isn't strong enough.

For service-based businesses especially, a founder's experience and story can help establish credibility and create a connection before the first conversation even begins.

Think Beyond Traditional Sales Tactics

While referrals, social media, and advertising can generate opportunities, Vincent encouraged founders to consider what their competitors are not doing.

When building his first company, Info Check, he couldn't afford expensive industry conferences or large marketing campaigns. Instead, he focused on cold calling while larger competitors pursued other channels. That consistent approach helped the company establish a customer base and eventually grow into a seven-figure business.

Today, one of his preferred approaches is personalized video outreach on LinkedIn. Rather than sending generic sales messages, Vincent researches potential customers, acknowledges their backgrounds, briefly establishes his credibility, and connects his expertise to a problem they may be experiencing.

The objective isn't to immediately sell a service. It's to earn a discovery call and start a meaningful conversation.

Turn Discovery Calls into Opportunities

Once a potential customer agrees to a conversation, founders should resist the urge to jump straight into their sales pitch.

Vincent approaches discovery calls with two questions: Can I genuinely help this person? And do I want to work with them?

By asking open-ended questions about a prospect's background, challenges, and business goals, founders can uncover the real problem before proposing a solution.

When there's a strong fit, Vincent recommends making the next step easy. For straightforward sales, this could mean explaining pricing and onboarding during the call rather than unnecessarily delaying the decision. More complex purchases involving multiple decision-makers may require a formal proposal.

The lesson is simple: Understand the customer first, establish value, and make it easy for them to move forward.

Follow Up, Stay Scrappy, and Take Action

Vincent compared customer acquisition to growing a garden: you plant seeds through outreach, nurture relationships, and follow up consistently. Not every conversation will become a customer, but founders don't need to win every opportunity to build a successful business.

Instead of repeating the same email, founders can experiment with different touchpoints, including LinkedIn messages, personalized videos, phone calls, and other relevant channels.

He also challenged founders to prioritize activities that could realistically bring in customers. Spending weeks perfecting a website or endlessly refining a sales pitch accomplishes little if no one is having conversations with prospective buyers.

"Perfection is not required to win." 鈥 Vincent Tsang

Whether it's sending the first outreach message, making a cold call, or asking for help, progress comes from execution rather than waiting until everything feels ready.

Key Founder Takeaway

Successful customer acquisition doesn't necessarily require a large budget, complicated sales funnel, or perfect marketing strategy. It starts with a clear problem, a compelling differentiator, consistent outreach, and a willingness to have real conversations with potential customers.

Vincent's biggest message was to stay focused, experiment with approaches that stand out, follow up without becoming discouraged, and commit to a repeatable sales process.

"Get obsessed with that process to win." 鈥 Vincent Tsang

For founders building their first customer base, the priority is not doing everything. It's finding what works, taking action consistently, and turning meaningful conversations into sustainable revenue.
