Annual awards gala celebrates impact of 91亚色 alumni

On Thursday, Nov. 21, 2019, members of the 91亚色 community gathered at the 19th annual Bryden Alumni Awards, honouring four extraordinary alumni who illustrate the remarkable contributions and impact 91亚色鈥檚 graduates are making nationally and internationally.

鈥淭his year鈥檚 Bryden honorees are four more extraordinary examples of 91亚色鈥檚 commitment to impact in action,鈥 said President and Vice-Chancellor Rhonda L. Lenton. 鈥淭hey have inspired, led and driven change here at home and around the world. They are environmentalists and scientists, innovators, mentors and philanthropists. While making the world a better place, they also have made it a priority to remain engaged and connected to 91亚色. They are our greatest ambassadors.鈥

Recipients honoured included Kimberly Badal (BSc 鈥12), Co-Founder of the Caribbean Cancer Research Initiative; Suzanne Katsi鈥檛siarihshion Brant (MES 鈥05), President of the First Nations Technical Institute; Eva Marszewski, OOnt, LSM (BA 鈥70, LLB 鈥73), Founder and Director of Peacebuilders International (Canada); and Robert Krembil, CM (MBA 鈥71, LLD 鈥00), President and CEO of Chiefswood Holdings Ltd.

Event emcee Paul Jones (BSc 鈥80), TSN reporter and the Raptor鈥檚 FAN590 play-by-play announcer.

The evening was hosted by Paul Jones (BSc 鈥80), reporter for TSN and Toronto Raptors鈥 play-by-play announcer on FAN590 radio, as alumni, students, donors and friends gathered at the elegant Arcadian Court.

The Awards are named after Bruce Bryden (BA 鈥64), who was an exceptionally committed and influential leader at 91亚色. Bryden was a member of the University鈥檚 first undergraduate class and he held several prestigious positions, including founding president of the 91亚色 Alumni Association and member of the 91亚色 Board of Governors. To honour his vision and exemplary leadership, these awards have been named after him.

"I accept this award with deep humility and gratitude as I know this is the result of not my singular effort but that of everyone who has worked and is working with me in self-sacrifice," said Kimberly Badal (BSc 鈥12), recipient of the One to Watch award. 鈥淏eing 鈥榦ne to watch鈥 suggests that the thought is that I will do something pivotal. Well, I am going to tell you where we are going. We are going to reach our targets of establishing the first sustainable, high-impact, internationally-recognized cancer research institute for the Caribbean. Cancer is serious business and we do not have time. The patients we serve every day are counting on us. My grandmother who died from this dreadful disease is counting on me.鈥

As part of the evening鈥檚 festivities, the opening song was performed by Knowledge Keeper, Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation, Valarie King. Along with her band, Canadian singer/songwriter and 91亚色 alumna Amanda Martinez (IMBA 鈥99) performed the song Gitana for the mid-evening entertainment.

The evening was made possible through the generosity of premier sponsor TD Insurance.
