One of the best ways to tell our story is through photography, by showing real-life moments as our community members engage in their pursuits, enjoy the collegiality of their classmates and colleagues, and strive for positive change.鈥&苍产蝉辫;

Photography

Great photography is a must when it comes to creating compelling creative and is pivotal in capturing a moment when telling a story. This section will provide valuable information on how to utilize great photography. Don't forget about our image collection!

鈥 Focus on people as a way to tell our story.鈥&苍产蝉辫;This is a visceral and memorable way to inspire鈥痵haring, propel curiosity and provide a 鈥減icture鈥濃痮f our brand.鈥&苍产蝉辫;

鈥 Capture authentic moments with eyes to the鈥痗amera or create a sense that the viewer is right鈥&苍产蝉辫;in the middle of a conversation. This is much鈥&苍产蝉辫;more compelling than architectural shots.鈥&苍产蝉辫;

鈥&苍产蝉辫;While it isn鈥檛 always easy to avoid using stock photography, please use no more than 20% in your materials. Even with camera phones, it is possible to capture a real moment from your鈥痮wn Faculty or area to help tell your story.鈥&苍产蝉辫;

We have provided sets of original images that reflect our diverse community, academic fields of鈥&苍产蝉辫;study and campus life. These are available for the 91亚色 community to use in marketing and communication materials. These are in low resolution but high resolution images are available upon request.

Remember the following when preparing for a鈥痯hoto shoot:鈥&苍产蝉辫;

  1. Images should not be clich茅d and should be鈥痳elevant to your subject area.鈥&苍产蝉辫;
  2. With the flexibility for Faculties and sub-brands鈥痶o use a specific coloured window, we also鈥痺ant to ensure the 91亚色 Red is integrated鈥痶o reinforce brand awareness. It may be added鈥痠n typography, or may be reflected as a red鈥痚lement (clothing, backpacks, files, objects)鈥痠nto the photograph. See some of the examples鈥痺e鈥檝e provided.鈥&苍产蝉辫;
  3. When taking photos please ensure that subjects are not wearing busy patterns and you provide a clear direction for the type of clothing to wear. This would include any clothing that could be perceived as political, sensitive, or negative towards another culture or group of people. It is up to the photoshoot coordinator to ensure they have properly vetted the subjects on the type of clothing to wear. Best to clothing that has pictures or statements on it, and instead recommend clothing with minimal branding and images.
  4. Ensure all subjects have signed a photo release waiver.
  5. Read our guidelines for taking a great headshot .

The 91亚色 U image style reflects unique aspects of our brand. Photos should reflect realistic situations rather than being staged or posed.鈥&苍产蝉辫;

You should choose images that are high resolution and sized appropriately, while being conscious of the overall tone and composition.鈥&苍产蝉辫;

Please see the examples of off-brand photography to avoid.鈥&苍产蝉辫;

DO NOT include shadows, oversaturated imagery or scenery that is too dark鈥&苍产蝉辫;

DO NOT use images that are low resolution or highlight the backs of people鈥&苍产蝉辫;

DO NOT use images that do not have a strong focal point鈥&苍产蝉辫;

DO NOT use images that showcase a poor angle and are unflattering

DO NOT use images that highlight empty space, feature poor cropping, or include incorrect applications of brand elements鈥&苍产蝉辫;

DO NOT use images of people with offensive clothing or political statements

Video

Video is a key element in telling our great brand story. Using our video elements to support your content will tie it to the larger 91亚色 brand and demonstrate our values. 

Video that is considered to be supplemental to your primary footage and used to illustrate a point is called B-roll. A shot of people walking down the street is a classic example of B-roll that鈥檚 often used in news video. Using actual footage of the campus in your video project will help viewers recognize it as coming from 91亚色 and strengthen our visual brand. 

If you are creating a video for external use or to appear on the University鈥檚 YouTube channel, your鈥&苍产蝉辫;video bumper should reflect the logo standards.鈥&苍产蝉辫;

Our guidelines for the 鈥渓ower thirds鈥 in video content provides details pertaining to the location鈥痮f the name, title and subject matter while working within the Design System.鈥&苍产蝉辫;

The 91亚色 watermark is optional and only to be used in paid advertisements, boosted social media, or any video that has the potential of being viewed or shared outside of 91亚色 channels (i.e. Markham Campus announcements). The watermark should appear and remain for the duration of the video. For longer videos or those with a multitude of graphics and text, it can be used intermittently at the discretion of the user, in order to minimize distractions.鈥&苍产蝉辫;
