Job description
Under the supervision of Prof. Usman Khan and Dr. Syed Imran Ali, the Humanitarian Water Engineering Lab RAY (for up to 6 hours per week) will support the delivery of the Fall 2025 Humanitarian Water Engineering (HWE) intensive training, an online professional development course aimed at upskilling humanitarian response professionals that translates HWE research into training content for professionals.
- Support literature review activities for the development of a new Humanitarian Sanitation Engineering (HSanE) intensive course, a sister course to the existing HWE training.
- Support development of training materials for HSanE course.
- Support research activities of the Humanitarian Water Engineering Lab including on the Safe Water Optimization Tool (SWOT) project, Chemical Water Quality and Severe Acute Malnutrition (CWQ+SAM) project, and others, including new collaboration development with international partners in Uganda, Yemen, Madagascar, Tanzania, Gaza, and other project sites. This will include supporting the write-up of manuscripts, knowledge products, and funding proposals.
Specific research activities the student(s) will be engaged in:
The student will:
- Gathering data from international government agencies and research organizations;
- Creating and maintaining a structured and annotated bibliographic review of existing literature organizing resources, projects, and individuals;
- Managing sources using reference management software.
- Participate in literature reviews and participate in the writing and editing of manuscripts, training materials, and other knowledge products.
- Development and management of international research partnerships
- Grant-writing and management activities
Qualifications
- Current undergraduate 91ÑÇÉ« student. Applicants from diverse programs of study are encouraged. - Demonstrated skills, experience, and familiarity with conducting literature reviews.

- Demonstrated excellent communication skills: professional written and interactive correspondence, public speaking and presentation.
- Demonstrated excellent computer skills (word processing, email, database, spreadsheets, forms, and slides; facility with Office 365 Apps). WordPress editing skills are an asset. Social media communication skills are an asset.
- Excellent interpersonal skills, including international and cross-cultural communication. Ability and willingness to work both independently and as part of a team with researchers, students, and staff.
- Demonstrated an eagerness to learn, support, and take on initiative.
- Demonstrated organizational and time management skills.
