Research Impact Blog Series 鈥 The Faculty of Education marcoms team recently launched a Research Impact Blog series highlighting the work of ED scholars whose ongoing research contributes to 91亚色鈥檚 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Here is the latest article featured in the series:

  • 91亚色 researcher rethinks math education for Black students - For Molade Osibodu, creating what she calls 鈥渓iberatory futures鈥 begins in the mathematics classroom. An associate professor of math education at 91亚色鈥檚 Faculty of Education, Osibodu focuses her research on how Black students experience math and how education systems can better support equity. 鈥淚t鈥檚 A Child鈥檚 Last Resort鈥: Elementary Teachers鈥 Collective Narratives Of Moving From Pain To Power In The Face Of Classroom Violence - In partnership with Elementary Teachers of Toronto (ETT), the local teachers' union, Assistant Professor Stephanie Fearon led an arts-based research study on the experiences of elementary teachers experiencing and organizing against school violence. Through storytelling, visual art, and collective reflection, this report moves us from pain to power and invites Torontonians to organize and build a properly funded and innovative public school system. 

  • Vice-President of the ETT and President of the Urban Alliance on Race Relations Nigel Barriffe (91亚色U alum, BA 鈥90) wrote a report for the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives on the research study "It's A Child's Last Resort".

Course Director Andrew McConnell presents at AI4CHIEF Symposium in Paris - McConnell presented "Assessing Open-Source LLMs for Anishinaabemowin" at the AI4CHIEF Symposium in Paris, April 16. The event was an interdisciplinary forum focused on exploring how artificial intelligence can support cultural heritage preservation and Indigenous self-determined futures.

Teaching & Learning

Year 1  PJ students at Markham campus design teacher tools through engineering inquiry 鈥 Students at the Markham campus engaged in a semester-long inquiry using the Engineering Design Process to create practical classroom tools. Supported by the Makerspace and guided by Professor Zuhra Abawi and Course Director Emily Burgis, their work highlights iteration, risk-taking, and learning through productive mistakes. Candidates reflected on how this approach shifted their focus from final products to the learning process itself. Explore portfolios by  , 

Inclusive STEM in Action 鈥 Students in Course Director Nadia Qureshi鈥檚 Primary/Junior Science & Technology course participated in a workshop titled 鈥淓quity in STEM Instruction in Ontario Classrooms, featuring a 鈥淗air & Hustle鈥 module. Through hands-on learning, they created hair products using natural ingredients while exploring how culturally responsive pedagogy can be embedded in everyday STEM. Hosted by Visions of Science, the session highlighted inclusive, real-world approaches to STEM education

Launch of K-12 Studio 鈥 Course director Muriel P茅guret and her colleague Mirela Cherciov are happy to announce the launch of, a repository of teacher-created pedagogical resources for French as a Second Language educators in Ontario and beyond. The platform offers resources under a Creative Commons license, supporting greater access and collaboration. The initiative aims to bring clarify and organization to the vast and often unregulated landscape of online teaching resources, while reducing reliance on resource marketplaces like 鈥淭eachers Pay Teachers鈥. The project is funded by the Ontario Ministry of Education and Heritage Canada.

Upcoming Research and Mentoring Events: 

This study examines the types, revision impact, and perceived value of feedback from three sources (GenAI, peers, and teacher) in an ESL writing context. Drawing on a recognition-based framework that distinguishes recognitive and extra-recognitive feedback, the study investigates: (1) what types of feedback students receive from each source, (2) what types of revisions they make in response, and (3) how they perceive the value, effectiveness, and motivational impact of different feedback sources.

Research Funding:

Research GPS (Grant Proposal Support)
The Research GPS program offers personalized support to help faculty researchers strengthen grant-writing and develop competitive proposals. Professors are paired with a 鈥淕PS Specialist鈥 (external grant consultant) for one-on-one support and receive peer feedback while working with the Research Office.

The Summer 2026 session supports major fall funding programs, including SSHRC Insight and Partnership Development grants, CIHR Project grants, and NSERC Discovery grants. Open to full-time faculty, spaces are limited and filled on a first-come basis.

Registration runs April 23 (12 PM) to May 7 (3 PM).

New Land Acknowledgement for email signatures - The University recently signed an MOU with the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation. One of the outcomes is the launch of a new land acknowledgement website. This update also affects email signatures. All staff and faculty are encouraged to update their email signatures with the new Land Acknowledgement. Updated templates are available by campus, Faculty and sub brand. They can be downloaded from the Email Headers and Signatures section of the 91亚色 brand website


AI Prohibition in Higher Education

Inside Higher Ed 鈥 鈥淚s Grammarly AI? Notre Dame Says Yes鈥 (Nov 26, 2024)
This article examines the University of Notre Dame鈥檚 decision to allow faculty to ban AI鈥慹nhanced tools like Grammarly, highlighting how expanding AI capabilities are blurring the line between editing support and academic dishonesty. It illustrates how some universities are responding with selective prohibitions to preserve academic integrity amid inconsistent campus鈥憌ide policies.

The Chronicle of Higher Education 鈥 鈥淚s It Time to Regulate AI Use on Campus?鈥 (Nov 2024)
The Chronicle reports on universities considering stricter regulation or bans on generative AI after confusion and mistrust surrounding AI鈥慸etection tools and uneven enforcement. It frames prohibition as an institutional risk鈥憁anagement response to concerns over grading fairness, data security, and academic misconduct.

Springer  鈥 鈥淕enerative Artificial Intelligence in Higher Education: Why the 鈥楤anning Approach鈥 to Student Use Is Sometimes Morally Justified鈥 (Aug 31, 2024)
This peer鈥憆eviewed, article argues that under certain conditions universities are ethically justified in banning or strongly restricting student use of generative AI tools. It frames AI prohibition as a defensible response to concerns about academic integrity, unequal access, over鈥憆eliance on automation, and the erosion of genuine learning outcomes.
