DARE Project: Beyond our monoracial lens: Exploring the experiences of multiracial people in the workplace?

I really valued how much ownership DARE gave me over the research process instead of just having me do busywork in the background. Having one on one mentorship made a real difference too, since I could ask questions and actually understand the reasoning behind decisions rather than just following instructions. Coming out of it, I feel like I have a much better sense of what research work actually looks like day to day, and it's made me more confident about pursuing further academic work down the line.

Project Description:

My DARE project, "Beyond Our Monoracial Lens: Exploring the Experiences of Multiracial People in the Workplace," examined how individuals who identify as multiracial navigate identity, belonging, and bias in professional settings, spaces that are often built around single-category racial frameworks. Working under Professor Budworth, I supported the qualitative research process by verifying interview transcriptions against original audio recordings to ensure accuracy, then worked closely with the data to identify recurring themes and patterns across participants' accounts, things like code-switching, assumptions from colleagues about their identity, and the emotional labor of constantly explaining or justifying who they are.
